Help from StampedeBlue

Hello dear football friends,

I am BlueVol03 from over at Stampede Blue.  As most sites are, we are doing a mock draft and I will be picking for your Bills.  I have browsed your site and seen many opinions on Maybin, Pettigrew, Matthews, and other prospects.  I have an idea of where to go with my picks but wanted to ask for insight from Bills fans.

With the Peters situation, are you looking for an OT?

Is Pettigrew worth a selection that high?

Is there a DE worth selecting at that spot in the draft?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

BlueVol03

- We won’t look for an OT high unless that OT can play guard or Peters has been traded.

- Pettigrew will be a target if we trade down or if we’re desperate at 11.

- DE is the obvious choice, but if you want to look smart, you’ll realize that the Bills themselves are far more comfortable with their ends than we the fans are, and they’ll look for the best defender. Honestly, I have heard and believe that the pick will be Clay Matthews.

Agreed, the smart money right now is on Matthews

But, if you are allowed to say trade down, it would be the best case situation for the Bills. Trade down with who is the big question, which will only be answered on draft day. If Crabtree or one of the QBs fall, I expect the Bills phone to ring off the hook. If they do trade down, expect the pick to be Pettigrew, but not at #11.

I have to agree..

I’d really like to go DE at 11, because i think we may be able find an upgrade at LB as late as the 3rd or 4th round. But even history shows that the bills rarely draft DE’s in the first round, the 2 starters we have on the roster right now were 2nd round picks. I just feel that if we don’t go DE in round 1 then we might not even address the position until round 3 or 4, which i wouldn’t like. especially if Robinson is there when we select in round 2.

I want a DE – probably won’t get it unless orakpo or brown is there (i just don’t see the bills feeling as highly about maybin as we do), i think they are probably higher on brown, because he is very similar to freeney another tampa 2 DE

My problem w/ taking mathews although he very well may be the selection is that i think he tested faster than what he looked on the field, which i think is a red flag. This guy just came out of nowhere, and is only shooting up the boards because of his workouts, not so much because of what he has done on a football field.

With the Peters situation, are you looking for an OT?

We hope not – we’re hoping he gets signed.

Is Pettigrew worth a selection that high?

Yes, we’d probably trade down ( although Whitner)

Is there a DE worth selecting at that spot in the draft?

Brown, Orakpo, or LB

Maybin would be a good selection at DE

Just use this

That should help you make the pick.

Go the best DE available unless a superior LB is there

If you think the Bills offense could get a shot in the arm with TO, Evans and a big time TE, and think Pettigrew is that TE, than Pettigrew can be the pick as well.

I definately could see us trading down if Petti is there at the mid 20’s from our 2nd pick. Like we did with McCargo and Poz.

Get DE/LB at 11 then Petti in 20’s would be pretty nice

Actually thats known as the "Konami Code" since almost all Konami games use that code

In some way shape or form

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

Ok lets give it a try
With the Peters situation, are you looking for an OT?

I wouldn’t think so. Peters has said that if a deal isn’t reached, he will NOT hold out again, so theres no urgency to trade him or draft his replacement.

Is Pettigrew worth a selection that high?

I personally don’t think so, but a lot of ppl do. He is the best TE in the draft, but personaly I’m leaning towards a DE.

Is there a DE worth selecting at that spot in the draft?

Deffinatly. If Everette Brown is available, you jump at the oppertunity to draft him. If not, Maybin is viewed as a risky, but very high reward pick, so he’d be good at 11.

Other good options are LB’s Mathews and Cushing, in that order.

My personal favorite is Brown, closely followed by Maybin. Mathews is the best LB in the draft if you want to LB.

by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 24, 2009 3:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I like EVERYTHING that I see hear AND

Brian you are unfortunately right about our DE situation. The coaches are pleased with what they have and I am not. Who cares what I think though. The pick is either Matthews or Cushing. I would say Matthews because Cushing doesn’t appear as durable. Personally I am HUGE on Everette Brown.

The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.

Process of elimination (looking at this backwards)

I think you can discount the Bills “reaching” for Pettigrew at 11 since the signed TO. I’m sure they still like him (and were possibly considering him), but I think the necessity to add another target for Trent Edwards can be relegated to the latter rounds now.

Take Brian’s point about the defensive ends on the team (especially considering it is the position that didn’t lose a starter from last season as opposed to LB, TE, OL) and you can eliminate them.

There is no Guard worth taking at 11.

The option of replacing Peters is there, but assuming they haven’t traded him by the time you do your mock, you can skip this position.

Finally, you are stuck with finding a replacement for Crowell at LB. Personally, I like Maualuga for the middle and moving Posluszny to SAM, but I don’t think the Bills want to do that.

So, by process of elimination, I end up agreeing with Brian’s original post. Look for the Bills to take Clay Matthews.

Where else would you rather be...

Ellison has been the primary starter for the past two years.. although it due to injury, maybe they are happy w/ him

REY should not be the selection, he is not fast or good enough to drop back in coverage especially when he is asked to drop into the deep 1/3 and play that middle area of the field. I think he is much more suited at ILB in a 34, or a 43 that doesnt ask their LB to drop into deep coverage down the seam

However i am starting to like mathews more, idk why, maybe because i trust the oppinions of some on here, although

picking him at 11 does scare me a little bit because this guy kind of shot up the boards out of nowhere, and all due to his workouts which means very little on sundays.

I just think if we have the oppurtunity to take brown or maybin at 11 (assuming orak attack is gone) then we do it simply because it sets us up well for the rest of the draft (and we would be getting a fine football player who instantly improves our pass rush), if our FO is not sold on any of those guys at DE then try and trade down take Mathews/cushing, while getting an extra pick in round 2 to select LG and DE, and then we take care of TE in round 3.
