New Blog: World Soccer Digest for Soccer Fans!

Several SBN football blogs are currently conducting community mock drafts. I always find it interesting to read through the rationale behind Bills selections when fans of different teams are making the picks; sometimes, it's a great way to clear the cobwebs of different scenarios out of your head when you're elbow-deep in Bills talk on a daily basis.

Below are five Bills picks from five different community mocks (there are more, but some haven't gotten to the Bills' selection yet). Take a gander, drop back in here and let us know what you think of the picks and the reasoning.

Revenge of the Birds: Aaron Maybin, DE, Penn State
Mile High Report: Brandon Pettigrew, TE, Oklahoma State
Arrowhead Pride: Rey Maualuga, LB, USC
Bleeding Green Nation: Everette Brown, DE, Florida State
Music City Miracles: Tyson Jackson, DE, LSU

4 of the picks seem at least like possibilities....

The 5th, Tyson Jackson, seems way out of left field. The guy is a 3-4 end, definitely not the type of DE the Bills could target.

And, no, I don’t have a problem with big DEs. 4 big boys on the defensive line wouldn’t generate much pressure but they’d likely be pretty stout against the run.

by Ron From NM on Mar 27, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, but we need the pressure, our run D was better than the 2007 variant

I mean, IF we had a 3-4? I would be all over Jackson like stink on a skunk.

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

The Titans guy really blew that pick.

Well they do call their blog “the music city miracles” maybe they’re just trying to hammer it in.

But with all seriousness, the only two pick that I see as likely at 11 are Maybin and Brown.

I know a lot of people from Nashville (I was actually there this weekend) and the percentage of them that admit that it was a forward lateral is almost insulting. Maybe they just feel like screwing us over even more.

Remember Flutie vs. Johnson? I was at that Colts game that brought up that controversy. They rested Flutie because we had already clinched a playoff position, and Surfer Rob came out and played well for the first time in four years. At least he knew the play book other than Billie Joe Hobart….

by pozzed51 on Mar 27, 2009 8:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We should have still played Flutie. I honestly believe that with the year that he was having, we could have made it to the conference finals, maybe even to the SB. The worst thing that the Bills have done in the last 15 years was sit Flutie for that game.

Mile High pick

- I agree with 3/5 picks, but Pettigrew will not be taken that high. Jackson is the best end at stopping the run, but Everette Brown is best pass rusher.
- I still like the Chiefs pick about Mauluaga – I think he is a player, plain and simple. He has been a stud middle linebacker at USC for 3 years. But Bills will leave Poz on the inside and he will probably break his arm again.

by BuffaloWhiner on Mar 27, 2009 2:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

-Great write-up by ROTB.
-One of the Broncos fans asked about Maclin… yeah we need another WR…
-They swear a lot over at Arrowhead pride and for someone with a newbie heac coach one of their guys sure like to bash Jauron. But in their rules they say “All opinions are welcome but insults are not tolerated, even in the slightest reference.” Does that included insluting other teams? Guess not.
-Nice pick by the Eagles guy and good stats to back it up.
-What makes the Titans guy’s pick so bad is that Jackson isn’t a pass rusher. he plays DE but that doesn’t make him a pass rusher. Maybin and Matthew were both on the board.

Oh well. I hope my picks don’t look ridiculous to other guys. :-)

Chiefs are still a bit sore after we gave them their worst home loss ever last year.

we have faith MRW – just don’t screw it up ;)

But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. What amazes me is the lack of research behind these picks

I say that because some of these (Pettigrew and Jackson) almost look as if they were picked on the fly. Kinda like “ok what holes do they have? TE? Ok give them Pettigrew.” The Jackson pick is even more baffling to me, it’s like they knew that we had trouble on our line, but didn’t know that the trouble was in the form of a lack of a pass rush and they just gave us a DE.

I’d like to think that we do a little bit more research than that in our drafts… but then again maybe we don’t. Who knows what will happen.

by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 27, 2009 4:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

oh absolutely – most of these guys (us included – but for whatever reason – we actually pay much more attention) only really care about their teams.

While we seem to look at all of the needs of other teams and make an educated guess – thats why the Bills have the best fans (toot toot -=(o) (my lame attempt at a horn)

Anyway Kenny, Yellow MegaMan is only $8.95, so maybe your mom can put it on layaway and make payments for a year or two

For the Author's blog I know alot of us spent time at various team blogs and the national sites

Looking into what those teams were aiming for. Of course, for some of us, certain philisophies came out (mine personally is build from the inside out) and that is reflected in alot of my picks (lineman baby!).

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

The really sad thing is that the Titans blogger’s explanation of the pick actually makes sense until you realize that the pick is Tyson Jackson. He said:

This pick was pretty simple. The Bills ranked 28th in the league in sacks last season so they need a pass rusher. Jackson is the best pass rusher on the board. Picking defensive ends is an in-exact science because they all look good at the combine, but Jackson had a solid 2008 season with 10.5 sacks after a disappointing 2007.season.

Maybe he just didn’t realize that Jackson had 10.5 tackles for a loss last year and not 10.5 sacks. That said, he should do some more research before saying that Tyson Jackson is going to help this team’s pass rush.

by kaisertown on Mar 27, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Run stopping, sure, pass rush, no, Jackson isn’t the guy we need.

Now if we could get our hands on Brown, then I’d be happy.

He was just taken in the SBN Mock.

Raji, Brown, and Orakpo are all gone.

I know

But it is a Mock, I’m talking about the increadibly unlikely scenario that he’s available to us in real life.

Mile High Report

I totally agree with the Pettigrew pick and the reason they gave for the pick .Also If I had to pick a DE Robert Ayers is the guy I’m leaning towards but 11 might be early for him ,but then again 11 might be early for Pettigrew.

by BigUgly on Mar 27, 2009 5:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

11 is too early for Pettigrew

And Ayers is flawed IMO, I think we’d be better off draft Brown at 11 if he’s there.

by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 27, 2009 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think 11 is super early for Pettigrew too. If the Bills really wanted him, they could trade back 8 or 9 spots and probably still get him.

by JasonB on Mar 27, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed... if the Bills REALLY want him

But my money is on either Brown, Maybin of Mathews, in that order.

BTW, thanks for participating in this

Always good to have an outside opinion, especially from a team that got our draft pick right ;-)

Oh and while I'm at it

Any truth to the Eagles being interested in Peters, and if so, what would you be willing to give up for him, theoretically?

by CanadianBillsFan on Mar 28, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This just goes to show

No one knows who the Bills are going to pick at 11, because the Bills don’t really know yet.
