2-Round Mock Draft

After watching Rey Maualuga DOMINATE the Pac-10 for the last 3 years, it is inconceivable to skip over him for a DE/TE/OLB. If the Bills do draft Maualuga they can move Posluszny to the strongside LB position and give the middle to Maualuga. Just imagine these two in the LB corps together, plus Kawika Mitchell playing weakside LB!!! Buffalo would quickly have one of the best LB corps in the NFL.

In the second round I have the Bills shoring up their need for pressure on the QB with Jarron Gilbert, San Jose State. He is a freakishly athletic DE at 6'5" & 288lbs. (check out this now infamous YouTube video: Jarron Gilbert jumps out of pool). He even spent time at DT while at San Jose State, where his sacks went down, but he wreaked havoc in the backfield and recorded an eye-popping 22 tackles for loss. Definitely capable of shoring up the the defensive line for the Bills and a great value as a second round pick.

Two TE's that would still be available in the 3rd round of my draft that would fit the Bills' needs are: Shawn Nelson, Southern Miss; and Cameron Morrah, California. Both are great catching TE's that can open up the field for Trent Edwards and they are both serviceable blockers. The other big need for the Bills are interior linemen and the two I have my eye on that would still be available in this mock draft are: Herman Johnson, LSU; and Louis Vasquez, Texas Tech.

P.S. Don't worry about my boy Marshawn Lynch; he'll be back after the suspension and will kill it!!! As long as Jauron and Schonert give Beast Mode the ball inside the 10-yard line!!!

No way to Rey Rey

maybe if we were in a 3-4 he could be the SILB, a real thumper.

In a Cover 2 4-3 he is too undisciplined in his gap control and would hurt our run D. Also least athletic of 3 USC LBs.

Gilbert is another 3-4 DE like Tyson Jackson. I like him but doubt we take him

Maualauga

Rey Rey tends to overpursue. Everyone’s knock on the other USC guys is they had other guys to pick up the slack but nobody used more of that than Rey. He was constantly out of position and had other people there to clean up the mess. He is a great hitter when he gets to the right spot. He will work great in a different defense but not ours. He couldn’t handle pass coverage and he couldn’t handle staying in his lane. He is a highlight reel player but doesn’t do the other things you need to do to be successful at the NFL level.

Rey Rey will go to multiple Pro Bowls in his NFL career

this “knock” on rey-rey about over-pursuing is one of those draft prep myths that get generated about players all the time. he was the most feared defender in the pac-10 (and arguably the nation), was a team leader at USC which fielded one of the best defenses in its history, and won the chuck bednarick award (which posluszny also won twice). ken norton jr. (maualuga’s LB coach at USC) said maualuga was the best college LB he’s ever seen, and predicts he’ll be one of the greats to play the position.

this whole “he’s undisciplined in his gap control” is nonsense. watch the film yourself and you’ll see that maualuga reads the offense incredibly well and does not play out of control. he is simply a violent LB and when he makes amazing plays in a game people assume it’s because he’s “out of position” … sorry, but he’s just a special player.

i’m a Cal alumni and had to watch our beloved golden bears suffer at the hands of the rey rey led defense for the last 2 years (even though keith rivers was still on the team 2 years ago, rey rey was still the most dynamic playmaker on the team). the overall talent level of maualuga justifies the bills taking him at #11 even if he isn’t their biggest need.

How is this some myth? You can go watch some film of him and see him over-pursuing on a number of occasions.

I never said he wouldn't
Rey Rey will go to multiple Pro Bowls in his NFL career

He has the tools to be outstanding in the right scheme. That’s not a 4-3 and definately not a Tampa 2. You’ve seen Kelsay and Denney out of their lane position and it cost the Bills. Would you want that from the LB playing over the top of him too?

Rey-Rey is a great hitter and would make some great highlights, but I don’t think that 100% of the time he’s the right player.

No to Rey

Did anyone notice that E. Brown isn’t even on this list? Fami1y First did you intentionally not select him?

If this is the way the draft actually shook out, E. Brown would be picked by the Bills at 11, then Pettigrew or Duke Robinson in Rd 2. This would be my dream draft no matter if we picked Pettigrew or Robinson in the 2nd.

How many years can we go without making the playoffs...eventually the odds go in your favor.........right?!?!?

Is Brown going back to college?????????

He isn’t even in the first 2 rounds of this mock draft!!!!!!!!! It’s either he is going back to college and has ruled himself out of this years draft, or in many peoples minds Brown is over-hyped and the dude really sucks.

Maybe the author knows something we don't....

There is a report out that 2 sure-fire first rounders tested positive for something banned by the league at the NFL Combine. Maybe Brown was one of those who allegedly had something in his body that he shouldn’t have…..though my money would be on Orakpo and Maybin, both of whom put on serious muscle in a relatively short time frame.

by Ron From NM on Mar 28, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh, i didn't hear about that

never heard about someone testing positive. Maybin does raise a red flag in my eyes, not sure about Brown or Orakpo. I read an article on Orakpo on scout.com and he gradually gained weight (muscle mass) throughout his college career. So it wouldn’t seem like him, but you never know.

I thought Orakpo put on all of his muscle in about a year. Yes, it can be done without strange chemical concoctions….but that’s not the way it usually happens.

whoops...

yeah, my error. in just skipped over him. although i would’ve had the redskins taking him at #13 making tyson jackson fall a couple spots.

to the posts below, i know nothing about e. brown going back to school or if he is on the juice.

Buffalo needs

Buffalo should pick someone on the defensive line in the 1st round and then the offensive line in the 2nd. They can pick up a LB in the 3rd. Then a project TE in the 4th. We have a year to develop the TE since we have TO to pick up the slack til then. That is the only way we can be competitive. We also need to sign Jason Taylor on a 2 year incentive laden deal. Taylor on one side Schobel on the other. Who are you going to double team?

Taylor is no longer the player he was because his heart is not in it anymore.

and September 7th you’d notice Rey Rey overpursuing past a RB who goes for a big TD so you’d do the sad dance. He is not a great fit for us but could be successful in a 3-4 where other LBs would be there to help when he messes up.

LIONS AT #1

I really believe the Lions will take Stafford with the number one pick. The guy has had solid experience at Georgia, he’s smart, great character, strong arm, doesn’t take many sacks, etc. Lions need to fill the stands and a franchise QB like Matt Stafford should do that.

The only other possibility would be Mark Sanchez in my opinion. However, Sanchez took more sacks than John David Booty did and only played for one year. The reason I don’t think Freeman gets the nod is because he played at Kansas St. Kansas St. isn’t a bad school, it’s just you don’t take someone from kansas st. with the #1 pick. With that being said, I think Freeman could develop into the best out of the three.
