Phillip Hunt Pro Day Results
Phillip Hunt just had his pro day so I wanted to provide everyone with the numbers and tell you a little bit about what they mean. Per NFLDraftScout.com
Size: 6'1'' 244 LBS
10 yd dash: 1.6 seconds
3 cone drill: 6.91 seconds
Vertical: 41.5 inches
Bench Press: 14 reps
Description of each measurable:
Size: Very compact football player who can get very good leverage.
10 yd dash: Good but not great first step.
3 cone drill: Very good at "working the arch" to get to the QB. Currently the lowest 3 cone drill of all DE's. Check out the importance of this drill for a speed rushing DE at http://www.nfl.com/combine/workouts.
Vertical: Extremely strong and explosive from the legs, this complements his leverage extremely well.
Bench Press: Bad upper body strength, this limits his pass rushing moves.
What does this all mean:
Phillip Hunt could provide immediate help as a situational pass rusher, but no more than that. However, with additional upper body strength and weight Hunt could develop into a premier defensive end in the NFL.
Compares to Dwight Freeney. Freeney is 6'1'' 266 and had 28 bench press reps when he came out of college. Freeney is a bigger/more powerful guy than is Hunt right now.
Should the Bills draft him? Absolutely. Pass rushing DE's have been sited as a need by both Dick Jauron and Perry Fewell. Hunt accumulated 32 sacks during his 3 years at Houston, 14 his senior year, with mediocre players surrounding him. Obvious late round choice for the Bills in my opinion. Other pass rushers I like are Clay Matthews, Everette Brown, and Lawrence Sidbury.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Yes, he is something to think about in the 4th round
Hunt accumulated 32 sacks during his 3 years at Houston, 14 his senior year, with mediocre players surrounding him.
But, the teams on Houston’s schedule, where they mediocre as well? But definitely something to think about in round 4.
Are we drafting Dino's now?

Here was the schedule. Only one ranked opponent, so the answer to your question is yes. However, Hunt did have a sack against Oklahoma St.
Southern U.
@ 16 Oklahoma St.
Air Force
@ Colorado St.
@ East Caro.
UAB Grass
@ Southern Methodist
@ Marshall
Tulane
Tulsa
UTEP
@ Rice
Air Force
However, the next highest sack leader on the team had 5 sacks compared to Hunt’s 14. In fact, the team only had 24 sacks total. So, Hunt had over 58 percent of them. This means he was probably double teamed frequently.
What I’m saying is that if you have over 58 percent of your teams sacks, and you had 14 sacks (#2 in the nation) that is pretty damn impressive no matter who you play for. I mean, he’s basically the only guy anyone ever had to worry about and he still got sacks.

Nice research
you saved me from looking myself. And it is pretty impressive that he had a sack against OK. St. , which does have a very good offensive line.

Here is Hunt’s game log if anyone wants to see what games he had his sacks, tackles and tackles for a loss in. You can go back to 2007 and 2006 as well. He actually got a sack against Oregon a couple years ago too. cfbstats.com is hands down the best site for this kind of info.
Agreed
This is the website that I use as well to look up stats. it’s great.

I think we need to improve our pass rush before round 4...
This guy is projected in the 4th round for a reason, he’s not an elite pass rusher and that’s what we need.. we don’t need another mediocre guy rotating in at DE.. now he may be value in round 4 but i think we need to go DE in round 1 round 2 at the latest… and for those of you who don’t like maybin, and don’t feel that he can be an every down DE i really hope you don’t feel that way about this guy considering he’s 3" shorter and about 6-8 lbs. lighter. I’d feel better about taking maybin at 11, then waiting and possibly getting good value w/ this guy in the 4th.. i just don’t see him adding much to our DE unit.
Do you have a link for this info?
Cause unless you were at the Houston pro day you should provide that.

244 lbs? Ouch, and ouch. Jeffcoat said 267 lbs, talk about WAY off.
Hunt is no longer a 3rd/4th round possibility for me. Not until the 5th or 6th at the earliest. His size and lack of upper body strength is going to really hinder him.

Depends...
Some teams might see him as a 3-4 linebacker which could push him up to the 4th round.

I don’t care how big or small a guy is, if he’s a good pass rusher, you don’t wait to take him. They’re hard to find.

Right, but do you take a 244 lb situational pass rusher in round 3? Remember that guy from Georgia last year, Marcus Howard, who was about the same size? He ran in the 4.4 range, coming off a double digit sack season. He wasn’t picked until round 5 by Indy. I want pass rushers for sure (isn’t that obvious!?!?!), but spending a 3rd on Hunt, at that size, is a bit questionable to me.
But hey, if Hunt becomes a good NFL pass rusher, I’ll be ok with wherever we get him!

A 3rd
I never said anything about a 3rd. However, he very well COULD be the best player there.
Right now i’m thinking 4th round at the highest, but 3rd is a possibility i guess.

I’d take Hunt in the fourth.

I took Hunt in the 4th.
But I’d rather take Beckum there and Hunt in the 4th. I just want to get him.

I’m guessing that the typo is that MRW would rather draft Beckum in the 4th and Hunt in the 5th but in his mock he didn’t want to risk missing out on Hunt all together so he took him in the 4th. I think.
Whoops...
I took Hunt in the 3rd in my mock so I wouldn’t miss out on him.
I’d rather take him in the 4th and grab Beckum in the third instead of Ingram in the 4th.

Clay Matthews
Matthews has all the physical tools to dominate as a speed rusher. 1.49 ten yd dash, 6.9 three cone drill, and a 35.5 vertical.
Matthews weighs 240 LBS, so he’s not exactly a small person. I think Matthews could be developed into a speed rusher as well as an excellent linebacker. Right now, he is my #2 best possibility for the Bills behind Everette Brown.
That’s good to hear, because I’m still of the belief that he’ll eventually be our guy. :)

I don’t think the Bills will end up being sold on any of the ends, and will take the guy that can rush the passer while simultaneously offering more versatility. Matthews is dominant on special teams, too.

Hunt is still a great mid/late round option, but if he is the best DE that Buffalo takes on draft day, then I will be a very, very dissapointed Bills fan.
I’m not sure that Freeney is the best comparison. He is probably more similiar in body and athleticism and style of play to Elvis Dumervil. Although I bet he bulks up and ends up being a lot like Chauncey Davis.
Dumervil
Yea, I agree with that. Dumervil is a 3 cone drill type of guy. Unfortunately I can’t find what is three cone drill time was. He runs a great arch. Smaller guy like Hunt.
Are there any other white defensive ends in the NFL, that start, other than Shobel, Kelsay, and Denney?

Jared Allen
"Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rabidly promoted by unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end". - R. J. Wiedemann. Lt.Col. USMC Ret.
Aaron Kampman, Kyle Vanden Boshch, Patrick Kerney, Chris Long. You’ve got 3-4 ends like Aaron Smith and Chris Canty and 3-4 OLBs like Matt Roth and Justin Smith.
C’mon you can’t seriously think that the Bills DEs stink because they are white. If you are implying that they need more athelicism at the position, then you totally right, but Jared Allen is a freak. Chris Long had a better 10 yard split than any of the defensive ends in last year’s or this year’s draft.
Chris Canty isn’t white. As if any of this matters anyhow.
