2006 Draft First Round

I was just poking around a little bit after seeing another reference to Haloti Ngata on this blog, and did some research.

I have come to the conclusion that when we talk about the 2006 draft and how the Bills should have drafted Ngata, we forget pick 1b for the Bills, John McCargo.  If you consider him, and his potential at the time, the Bills draft strategy was sound.  We've even seen a few flahses of what McCargo was capable of (albeit a very few).

If he had reached his potential, we wouldn't be lamenting what might have been had we chosen Ngata, We may have made the playoffs last year, despite J.P. Losman dropping his balls all over the place. If only Whitner could figure everything out, something might still be salvaged from what turned out to be a less than stellar first round.

Who knows, the stars might shine down upon McCargo this year and we might get some production out of him.  Wouldn't that be great?  Stranger things have happened.

Make that Jay Cutler.

Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

Nah...

I’m good with a RB-eating vacuum cleaner with his own gravitational pull over an admittedly talented, but childish, spoiled, prima donna of a QB.

Make that, I don’t care anymore.

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

McCargo

Not sure but I believe the defensive line coach (who left) did not get along with John. I’m givng him more time to see what he can do with the new def line coach. I hope it works.

What?

You’re blaming our line coach for the bust that is McCargo? His work ethic is what gave him the status of “big time bust”

Actually Chris Brown over at OBD said the same exact thing.

It’s a long shot but it’s better than nothing.

What was so pathetic about it?

His intensity was awful to say the least...

I saw him do “cardio” a few times…

The worst was him, late at night (11:30PM) jumping on a machine right next to an attractive blond. There are 100 or so machines in the cardio area. One lone girl working out in the corner. He picks the machine right next to her. He tries talking to her the ENTIRE time, and she bolts within 10 minutes. He then does 15 or so minutes by himself and leaves the gym. He did less than 30 minutes of cardio, at a rate that is laughable at best. I don’t know….

…his heart just was not in it. Seemed like he was a big stubborn baby whose dad was making him work out.

Why was he working out at some gym and not OBD?

I think Trent already told you.....

to pick up chicks. :-) He did his regular workout at OBD. Then left the sausage-fest behind to get some tail.

Yeah, nothing like the gym at 11:30pm to pick up girls.

I know a few people talked to him...

…he was pretty nice. I think he said he just wanted some variety and to be able to get away.

I agree syr

I’m almost sick of all this hindsight lamenting of the 2006 draft. We’ve been a pretty solid team drafting recently. You’re not going to hit them all. Their strategy was sound, didn’t work out. But Marshawn, Poz, Trent was a pretty excellent first three rounds like I haven’t seen in a long time, from any team Its too early to judge 2008 but I was a big proponent of McKelvin last year and I remain convinced he is going to be one of the top playmakers in the league soon. We don’t know what we have in Hardy or Ellis yet but Hardy did show flashes of redzone ability.

nope

I still like drafting Whitner. He was a mid season All Pro last year. He is a great player, he will be even better when our coaching staff can decide if he is a FS or a SS. The issue I have with that draft is trading back in to the first round for a player we could have gotten in the second or third.

Why not Bobby April?

The Associated Press

…it was in the newspapers, on sports radio. They made mention to how everyone said Buffalo reached to get him. God, now I’m gonna have to find a link.

I remember a lot of people thinking we could have gotten McCargo in the second round, and possibly even the third, without trading up. And I remember thinking that Whitner was not worth a top ten pick.

I would have taken Ngata and not traded up to get a second first-rounder.

I like Whitner

I just think his ball skills are lacking. I mean we’re born with the dam things!
Anyway, yeah, post joking, I think McKelvin will be very good and he is an exciting player and I like our defensive backfield. I am actually at a loss as to what our team has. These boys need to grow up, and i have a feeling the FO coaching staff are betting on solid development.
Of course i am not convicned the Bills will even sniff .500
