Buffalo signs Terrell Owens. Believe It!

We talked over the last week about the Buffalo Bills making moves - or, more accurately, not making moves - in the first seven days of free agency.  Well, that all changed this afternoon.  Buffalo has sent shock waves through the National Football League with the signing of one of the most controversial NFL figures, Terrell Owens.  Yes, you read that correctly.  Vic Carucci of NFL Network is reporting that the Bills and Owens agreed to a one-year contract this afternoon:

The Buffalo Bills and free agent wide receiver Terrell Owens have reached agreement on a one-year contract. There will be a press conference at 6:15 p.m. ET at the team’s headquarters.

According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, the contract is worth $6.5 million.

So.  T.O. is a Buffalo Bill.  WOW.  As Van Miller use to say, "buckle your seatbelts!" This is going to be an interesting ride!

Hambone's Comments:

Had to delete the other thread, so I wanted to post what Hambone said about the situation:

By the looks of it they Bills are making a real play for T.O.’s services. According to KFFL.com he is visiting them today and the Bills are said to be trying to work out a 1 year deal.

Now, I am one of those fans that don’t really think this will help our team. He is not the player he once was and if he doesnt get the ball he will just start his whining again IMO. Is this really what Bills fans want to see? His lack of concentration is what caused him to drop so many balls last year.

We need a really good blocking WR and T.O. fits that bill ONLY if he is happy. If he becomes unhappy, which is all too often, he will not give more than about a 50% effort on the field. That will also transcend off the field and into the locker room as it has for every other team he has been on.

If this does come to fruition it could be a long season for Bills fans. But, I guess we will have to hope for the best

.

TO is looking to rehad his image

He will be on his best behavior here for the one season and will then hit the open market.

We wanted someone to take away the double team on Lee, we got it. We no longer need to draft a TE high this year, we can go pass catcher and coach up their blocking. I think this is a good signing at one year, if they had done a 2-3 year deal, I would be mad.

But TO NEEDS the Bills after 99% of the NFL said they didn’t want him. He will be a good team mate for one season. Trent will chuck a TON of balls his way since he is a YAC player which Trent needs. Good move Bills!

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

6:15 press conference

I like this move, TO will do all he can to be the model citizen for 1 year and then make one more cash in. I like it.

Does a bellyflop count as a splash?

Yeah, the Bills reportedly made free agent headlines today but I have a bad feeling about this.

Ironically, the NFL Network is showing the Bills-Oilers comeback playoff game.

TO needs us more than we needed him, no one would touch him

If he wants one more big payday, he will play hard for us and keep his mouth shut. My bet is that contract is FULL of incentives and escalators based on performance and team goals.

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

this is a

splash…desperate times call for desperate meausers. Give the Bills credit for acting quickly to get this done. While I think we all agree T.O. is an idiot and a cancer, for a 1 year deal that could infuse the kind of talent on offense to finally provide Lee Evans a true WR lining up opposite this is a great signing. WHAT DO WE HAVE TO LOSE? Being 7-9 again???

Stunned!

I cannot stand Terrell Owens as a person, but this is a good move for Buffalo only if:

1) They didn’t overspend, meaning not pay more than they were willing to pay Coles for the first year. And the signing cannot hurt them too badly if they cut Owens before the season ends.

2) Trent Edwards was consulted beforehand, otherwise he may retire tonight.

And, most importantly…

2) Owens is on notice just as New England put Moss on notice when they obtained him. In other words, the very first moment he becomes selfish or disruptive, he’s shown the door.

If those three conditions have been satisfied, I’m behind the move.

I've been feeling Buffalo ill.

While TO is playing make sure Hardy and Johnson get a ton of practice time and game time opposite him. We will be seeing a ton of 4 WRs on the field now!

EXACTLY! Time to poop or get off the pot. Without making the playoffs this year, we would’ve had to start over anyway, so if TO “ruins” the team, then we would have been in the same spot, with a new coach and maybe a new QB. Looking at our schedule for this season, and based on what we saw last year from this team, I really didn’t see us going any better than 7-9 again AT BEST, and more likely finishing with 4-6 wins.

IMO, it makes the sky the limit at the top of our potential and doesn’t change much at the bottom of the spectrum.

Buffalo just pooped. In a good way.

I’m sorry but this is a great deal… This is a ONE YEAR DEAL that fills a position we desperatly need. This gives James Hardy an extra bit of cushioning. This gives Josh Reed the slot at which he excells at. Owens knows its a one and done so he’s going to have incentive the entire year. This was a perfect aquisition.

Worst case scenario: We finish anywhere between (4 – 11) – (8-8) and the Bills stay relevant for the entire season. Dick Juaron knows this could be his last season here so of course hes willing to take this.

Finally national sports talk media will have stuff to say about our team. Awesome!

i think his stint in dallas was a lot more media generated than his times in SF and Philly… he was younger then and really did come out and throw his teammates under the bus.

in dallas, his words in press conferences were not at all like they were in philly and sf. whether the locker room strife was as real as it was blown up to be is a matter of speculation

And that might have psyched TO out some, causing the drops. He might not have been the cancer, I think in Dallas the spotlight was too much, and he couldn’t handle it.

In Buffalo, he can shine, without so much attention, or at least the kind of attention that is too overbearing. Buffalo might be more fun for him.

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Mar 7, 2009 6:45 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

exactly.

well said. even in Dallas I almost started becoming sympathetic because he can’t say anything in a press conference without it being negatively taken. If he doesn’t say anything negative on his own, the reporters will gear the questions to make him say something that might possibly be taken as negative so they can blow it up.

Granted, he earned this treatment on his own accord in SF and Philly, but it seemed to me like he was growing up a little bit in Dallas.

Now, playing with his – most likely – final chance in the NFL, I can see him humbling himself and playing football like we all know he can. If he screws this team up, no one else is taking him. Guaranteed. He knows it, and we know it. He’ll produce, and he’ll shut his mouth because he still wants another big deal after this one year is up.

Evans

never got many looks/touches anyway, and he was mostly just a deep threat and vertical stretcher. His talents just beg to have a guy like TO on the other side. I think Evans gets the same amount of receptions now, except now it’s that he has more than two TD’s because the downfield routes will be more open. I can’t possibly see Lee being mad about this. He doesn’t seem like a guy who’s obsessed with catches or looks, because even without TO there were games where we never even tried to get him the ball at all, and we didn’t really hear complaints.

by nickfeely8 on Mar 7, 2009 7:05 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i wrote this in defense of his signing in january, and I think it still rings true.

He’s a red zone threat- The Bills don’t have a dynamic, red zone threat, and when you settle for FG’s, you lose football games. With 9+ TD’s in every year but 2 since 1998, TO puts the ball in the endzone.
He can be 1A to Evans’s 1- I love Lee Evans. I think he’s a great football player. However I don’t like him as our #1 receiver, for reasons that Brian talked about earlier in the season. He’s a 3-5 catches, 60-80 yards kind of guy. That’s great production, but he’s not a possession receiver. He’s not the guy we hit on 3rd down. TO is. And maybe we call TO 1 and Evans 1A, because TO would like that, and I think Evans wouldn’t care.
He’s tough- Yeah, the Cowboys folded this year. But TO didn’t. When the team needed him the most, week 17, he had over 100 yards receiving. I think we all remember the super bowl he had with the Eagles while playing on 1 leg. I think the Bills were soft this year. TO wouldn’t let that happen.
Trent is smarter than Romo- This is pretty subjective on my part, but I believe Trent is smarter, and mentally tougher than Tony Romo. I think he could take TO’s antics, of which I’m sure there will be some.
Fire- Aside from being a brutally tough player, he quite simply doesn’t tolerate mediocrity. I am willing to accept that I might be reading too much into Jauron’s passive nature (and mediocre career record, his comfort with his DE’s, with Anthony Thomas, his many 7-9 seasons), but it seems that the coach isn’t going to get on his players for being average. TO wouldn’t accept that. Plus, you’d get the added bonus of seeing your frustrations vindicated when he yapped at somebody on the sideline (tell me you don’t want to see jauron look angry, just once!).

doesn't buy posluzny.

I call it an upset if it’s a lower ranked team beating a higher ranked team. I’ve used that terminology since I started watching college ball, and I use it for the NCAA tournament as well. Has nothing to do with whether or not I think Pitt is a better team (which I do), just has to do with the “objectivity” – at least on my part – of the numerical rankings.

I have to say, it feels extremely good seeing the Bills all over ESPN. That, and the offense just got that much more relevant. I feel that with this move we are a couple pieces away from being playoff contenders. Bring on the draft!

there are zero strong personalities/leaders on the field or sidelines to help control TO. need one. peterson maybe?

I heard an NPR review.

They said it was very true to the graphic novel, and while this would make a Watchmen enthusiast happy, the average movie-goer would not appreciate it. I am intrigued. It might have to be one of those read-it-after-you-watch-it. I actually didn’t get into 300 because it was just a big fight scene. But this story obviously has a plot…NPR reported the graphic novel is considered one of the top 100 contemporary books by some big news agency. (sorry, no link)

Totally on board with you about 300. My buddies all rave about it all the time, but after I saw it, actually just within the last month, I really wasn’t that impressed. The whole “graphic novel to a movie” animation is pretty awesome, but 300 just didn’t carry the storyline it needed to for me to be satisfied. To be honest, I wasn’t really that into Sin City either, but that’s another story altogether. Watchmen I’m pumped for though.

You’ll enjoy the movie more if you read it, then watch it. Trust me.

It stayed VERY true to the GN. Some slight tweaks here and there, obviously, and in particular with the plot of Ozymandius, but incredibly true to 98% of the GN. Incredible movie. I saw it with my college roommate and a friend of ours. They’d never read the GN, and while they liked the movie, I don’t think they enjoyed it as much as I did. But I’m also a nerd, so…

Does this prevent...

us from signing a LB? I like this deal for three reasons:
1) We get national notoriety
2) It’s likely going to sell more tickets, potentially delaying any move to Toronto, LA, etc. (not that I thought we were going anywhere beforehand)
3) T.O. is a terrific talent and he can probably help us, especially in the first few games we’re without Lynch (though FredEx can certainly handle the load)

If anything

T.O. will make the post game news confrences lively. Instead of hearing the same old " before I comment I need to review the tape of the game" or " we need to work on eliminating those type of mental errors". T.O. will say it like it is and hopefully it will make each player feel personnely accountable for his performance. Even if T.O. doesn’t have a big season, he will give this very boring lunch bucket team a shot of swagger. And hopefully that shot will elevate the bar on their performance. The more I think about it, I think Jauron wanted T.O. for the locker room and practice field as much as he wanted him to play opposite of Evans.

Besides, he has better tackling and blitzing skills than Leo OR McGee put together. So he is best off as the nickel back in the slot where both are needed.

Who gives a crud about the freaking “Moral High Ground” were not the Mormon Church, or any religious order for that matter, though the team CAN make over 50000 people all jump up at once and all take the Lord’s name in vain!

Anyhow, as it stands, who gives a crud about Moral high ground when your team is not very good, is no longer relevant despite being the only team in NFL history to reach the Superbowl 4 times in a row. We needed to some punch and pizzaz, we got it!

Joe buddy, they don't hand out superbowls or playoff spots to teams of choir boys

If being good people, high charecter players was all it took to win in the NFL, we would be Superbowl champs consitently. It doesn’t, it comes down simply talent (or our teams lack thereof) coaching, and play on the field. We’ve failed in all three the past 10 years, lets see what adding some swagger and talent can do

The question I want to know is:

Will they truly only keep him for 1 year, or would they extend him if he pays off for the team? I’m really not excited to think this could be a 1-year bandage. I’m nervous about this move, but i’d be insane to think it won’t help on gameday.

I wanted Boldin. This is the risky alternative.
