TO: Just what the franchise needs
After vehemently disagreeing with the idea of bringing in TO after he was released, I had started giving some thought to it not being that bad of an idea after all. Earlier in the day when the rumor that the Bills may actually indeed have some interest in TO, I began to see the benefits, and in the end, I think it's a great risk to take. A risk that this franchise never seems willing to take.
I have so many thoughts on this right now, I had to put it all in this fanpost. I'll probably forget some of what I had originally been thinking too. When I got that first text saying the Bills had scheduled a press conference, for whatever, I knew exactly what it was about. With the rumored interest earlier in the day, and it being a Saturday evening, it just made sense that something big was about to happen.
To me, this screams of desperation, just like Brian mentioned before. And you know what? I love it! We know the coaches are on one of the hottest seats in the league, deservedly so, they need to win now or they'll be hoping for a job elsewhere next year. They have done very little thus far, so something big needed to get done. They had a chance to go after one of the better receivers in the league, so why not try to get it done? TO is really going to help our O, more than whatever stats he gives us. I love his run after the catch ability, it'll be nice to see a WR on our team that can actually do that. I love that he'll demand attention from the D, hopefully opening up Evans deep, Reed underneath and Lynch/Jackson in the flats. We have a lot of options out there now, and with a receiving TE in the draft, we have a potentially pretty good O this year. At least until Schonert ruins it.
This franchise absolutely had to do something. They HAD to. After a season that was a total collapse and a fanbase that seemed as disenfranchised as ever, a big splash was crucial. They couldn't afford to bring in the likes of Haynesworth or trade high draft picks for a Boldin, so why not take the chance on TO? Why not throw your fanbase a bone? Even if this move backfires, at least the front office finally did SOMETHING. I have been so sick and tired of a reactive franchise, one that is afraid to do anything big. Well they finally stuck it to me and showed they may actually have a backbone in there somewhere. This team needs a TO, and ya know what, it sure seems that TO needs the Bills.
It's pretty obvious that the Bills were the only team with any significant interest in TO. Maybe another team would have been willing to sign him, but if that interest was legit, it seems likely that they would have been offering significantly less. The Bills may not have been going up against anyone else for his services, and they may have overpaid if that was the case, but ya know what? They finally got a deal done with a bigger name FA. That, in and of itself, is a big change.
And for those of you that think TO is just going to sabotage this team and destroy the locker room, I won't disagree with you. It could very well happen, and that was the opinion I had when we first heard TO was released a few days ago. Why would any team want to risk it's locker room for a 35 year old WR? It's a very rationale thought. However, I think TO needs the Bills and he needs to behave. Think about. TO has a 1 year deal here, he is basically on a prove it or get the f out deal. I like that. TO's career is d-u-n, done if he doesn't behave this year. Look at how little interest there was in him this year. What happens if he acts up and is sitting out there next year, as a 36 year old WR that just blew his last chance? If TO wants to continue playing football after this year, and wants a new contract somewhere, he absolutely has to play nice. He has to, right?
I still can't believe that the Bills were the only team interested. That does say a lot about TO, and that does worry me. But as I mentioned, I think TO has to make this work. How weird is it seeing TO answering questions in a Bills hat, on ESPN?
I love the potential this offense has this season. We have some pieces to finally make some noise on O again, and it's due mostly to TO's presence Once we solidify LG (hopefully) and find a good threat at TE in the draft, we are looking at a group with some very nice potential. Of course, we still have Schonert calling the shots and a question mark at QB. Trent, if there was ever a time for you to take a major step in your development, it's...right...now.
As a quick sidenote, does anybody find this quote rather hilarious?:
"I was a little surprised at first," said defensive end Chris Kelsay. "When you looked around at our team and the needs we have, wide receiver wasn't the first one that jumped out. But it's great to add talent.
It's as if Kelsay knows and readily admits his fanny is on the chopping block, and that he knows he's about to have a talented rookie competing with him for PT. I freakin love it!!!!
I still can't believe TO is a Bill. Two of my friends sent me texts once they heard:
No way
The Bills signed TO! Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
True
Those two pretty much explain what should be thought of this situation.
In the end, I'm not sure I see a whole lot of downside to this move. If TO acts like the primadonna that he is, and causes a disruption, is it really going to be that big of a deal? Is it going to cause us to miss the playoffs (we weren't headed there anyhow)? He's only here for a year, unless he gets franchised, so we can cut the cord pretty easily. At least this move makes our franchise relevent again, gives non-Bills fans a reason to talk about and watch the team, and gives us, at least, a sliver of some hope again. TO's career is on the line here, he's got to behave. I think TO is going to be in full on prove-the-naysayers-wrong mode all season. In fact, his numbers could be huge this year, if history is any indicator:
In short, Owens has been at his best in his career when he has had something to prove – in 2000 when Owens was replacing Jerry Rice as the top target with the San Francisco 49ers, and in 2001 when Rice was gone and playing across the bay in Oakland.
In 2004 with Philadelphia (after Owens’ relationship with the 49ers hit meltdown), Owens was again at his best in order to prove himself in a new place. He had one of his better years and helped the Eagles reach the Super Bowl. By the next season, he and McNabb couldn’t play nice anymore.
In 2006 with the Dallas Cowboys, he was good again and was even better in 2007 when he was playing under a new coach (Wade Phillips) and wanted to prove that former coach Bill Parcells was a tyrant.
By 2008, however, it was back to meltdown as his relationship with teammates deteriorated to nothing and forced Dallas owner Jerry Jones to cut him Thursday.
So in five “prove-it” seasons: 433 catches, 6,598 yards, 71 touchdowns. The averages during those seasons: 86.6 catches, 1,319.6 yards, 14.2 touchdowns.
Wouldn't that be great for this franchise? And wouldn't it be great if this move actually helped improve the chances of adding FA's in the future? Maybe TO can have a great year, talk about how great it is to play here, sign a new deal, and show others that Buffalo can be a destination and winner. Even the most pessimistic/realistic of Bills fans can have that type of optimism....:)
I might even be upset that we didn't sign him to a multi-year deal. At least one that would have made it easy to dump him after this season. Oh well. We finally added a superstar player, even if he's a superdouche for the most part. The upside is great, and the downside seems limited. I really can't disagree with this move, even after initially hating the thought of adding TO. I just hope it works out now....

Here is the thing for me: Love the gutsy call, no downside to me
If failed with or without Owens this fall, DJ and Co. were all getting tossed, why not gamble he can take us to the Playoffs? Side Note- Trent baby, get your ass to Buffalo like RIGHT NOW and starting tossing balls to TO, help the dude move into his condo, taking him to Dave and Busters with ML, DO ANYTHING to get on his good side now!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Anyhow, moving along, the onus is now on Turk and Trent to get Owens and the rest of the guys the ball and into a consistent rhythm. I too noted Kelsay may be looking at the chopping block if the Bills see another FA who could help them and they need the cash, oh yeah, they have someone like that, PETERS. Dump Kelsay and just hand his money over to Peters as part of the deal, make my day OBD!
I need a night of sleep to really appreciate what a Big Balls move was made by our FO on this one. I mean, wow, who would have thought we would be the ones pulling this off?
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

all that needs to be said is this thought:
We haven’t made the playoffs in 9 years….we are 21-29 under Jauron. Our current WR corps is putrid garbage. We need T.O. and his unreal WR ability. The Buffalo Bills have ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to lose. If T.O. is a cancer we finish 8-8 at worst and we move on from T.O. If T.O. helps us, we make the playoffs, Trent learns how to thrive under pressure, and this team realizes its potential.
T.O. is a blessing for this team, this franchise, this fan base, and this city. While many hate T.O. undoubtedly all that matters is his ability and passion for the game. If T.O. succeeds so too will this fan base welcome him in with open arms. We need T.O. and T.O. needs Buffalo. As weird as it sounds, get used to it Bills’ fans, cuz T.O. is the big splash this franchise needed. I for one, am welcoming T.O. with open arms and I hope that in due time the rest of you do too. He will make us better, I promise.

Why I like it
1.
“The upside is great, the downside is limited”
Perfectly said.
2. In the last two seasons, Buffalo has had 26 receiving TD’s, and TO has had 25.
3. As you stated many times, TO needs us to further his career. I said this before, but to me it’s just like the Manny Ramirez Boston/LA situation. He was so hated in Boston and around baseball for “quitting” on the Sox, and his stock really couldn’t have been lower. He gets traded to the Dodgers, knows he’s playing for his last contract/chance in the majors, and puts up maybe the best half-season in baseball history. Manny knew he wasn’t getting a deal at 38 (?) if he screwed up his Dodgers chance, and TO knows he’s not getting a deal at 36 if he screws up his Bills chance. If TO has the football equivalent of Manny’s Dodgers stats last year (.396, 17 HR, 53 RBI), our offense is going to be OUTSTANDING.
4. TO, in his good times, brings a swagger and attitude that the Bills haven’t seen in a long, long time. He works his ass off for his football teams, and even if he doesn’t openly embrace Hardy/Johnson fully, there’s no doubt they’ll be able to learn work ethic, reading defenses, route running, etc. from him for a season.

I actually meant to throw in a comparison to Manny. It’s very similar. A team that needed the player for on field production, while the player needed the team to give him one last(?) chance. Hope it works out like it has for the Dodgers….

That’s just it Joe P. A lot of people are saying, “TO has to behave.” The issue is, if he couldn’t before, why should any of us think he’ll be able to now?
I will admit that in his first years with other teams, he has behaved.
Joe P., if you weren’t such a perv, I’d think you and I were brothers from another mother. We think too much alike (except for the perv part).

He may, he may not behave. But isn’t it worth the chance? A one year deal where if he doesn’t behave, he can enjoy not playing the game again. If it doesn’t work out for the Bills, oh well, it’s a only a 1 year deal. We can move on next year, but at least this franchise finally did something to improve.

If TO gets the ball, he will be fine
The only thing that makes me believe that it could work is that the expectation is different this time. When TO went to Philly and Dallas, he thought he was going to get his ring. He was one of the top WRs in the game, knew it, and acted like it. The situation has changed and TO knows it. If you made a list of the top 10 WRs in the game last year or this coming year, would TO make the list? At the press conference, you could see him searching for the right thing to say. He didn’t use phrases like “…..help this team to the SB.” He talked about trying to …..make it to the next level (next step) or to the playoffs or something along those lines. I wonder if the Bills were the only choice he had? Maybe TO got his first real taste of humble pie.

Very well put Kurupt.
As I have posted myself I am a pessimist when it comes to T.O. Do I think they guy is a good talent? Yes. Do I think he could “possibly” help our offense? Yes. Do I think he could destroy the locker room and the young talent we have on our team by that happening? Yes. But, after letting it sink in over night and getting back up this morning to really look over this team. You are right. What else was there? Why not take the risk?
After looking over the numbers from last year we had 1 wr over 1000 yds and that was Evans. He barely got there at 1017. That was after being double team all year long. I look at the rest of the wr’s on our team and the production they had. It was minimal as we all can agree. We had 4 other wr’s (Reed, Parrish, Johnson & Hardy) that caught balls throughout the season besides Evans. Their production combined only equaled a paltry 99 catches for 1018 yds and 6 tds on the year. That is pathetic when you look at it. That is a mere 6 catches and 63 yds per game over a 16 game season. How did that help? Well, it helped us to a 3rd 7-9 record in a row under this regime.
I then look at what Owens did in Dallas last year. Now, he is on the decline a bit, we all know that, BUT, he still put up better numbers than our other 4 combined. (69-1052-10 tds). I guess it cant hurt to include his type of “possible” production in our offense. Not only his production, but, how about taking away that double coverage from Evans? That would be ideal.
Well – Let us all hope for the best and realize that like many have said “What can it hurt our 7-9 team?”.
GO BILLS!!!!!

I think I’m getting over the shock of this enough to finally voice some words.
One thing I’m nervous about is Schonert. Now, since I ride on the SS Optimist, I have to think that much like a player, Turk will improve between his first season an an OC an his second. I think the way he calls games this year will be second only to Trent’s improvement in importance.
For example, they (the experts) are saying TO can’t get off of the line, and was more effective last year when in motion. Is that going to be the tip off for opposing defenses this year, like the shotgun was last year?
How lucky is Lynch today? No one is talking about him, save for Goodell and his cronies while they figure out what to do with him.
Am I going to see a lot of Owens’ jerseys at the stadium next year?
Owens mentioned something in one of his conferences about being active in teh community. What what what? I never heard a thing about that kind of stuff from him before. Maybe he did do some nice stuff, but it just got overrun by all of the other off the field stuff. I think the coolest thing he could do to would be to take over Losman’s baby, buffalolives.org. Or better yet….
How about an official TO/Bills bag of popcorn, with proceeds going to local Buffalo charities?
My head is still spinning. Every time I have a thought, it segways into another one. This still just boggles my mind….

I'm shocked.....I'm shocked....I'm shocked....
I’ve been in church whole day, and didn’t get to see this news until now.
I told J2 that T.O. won’t come to Buffalo, but I guess I underestimated how Buffalo can help T.O.
I agree there are more upside than downside. I’m all for this move since the beginning, but just didn’t believe it would happen. Give credit where credit is due — I commend Jauron and the FO for trying.
Before T.O. signed, I had commented in another post that I expected an 1 year deal for T.O. I’d go on to say, and I’m not saying this because I’m a diehard Bills fan, that T.O. will behave very well and have a monster season with the Bills. He needs this monster season to get the final contract of his career on a high note.
This signing can help Buffalo lands other FA. I hope Jauron and the FO make good use of this momentum ASAP!!

I still can’t believe that the Bills were the only team interested. That does say a lot about TO, and that does worry me
I think he did get interest from other teams K, I just think they offered him multi year deals on the cheap. Buffalo was probably the only team willing to offer a one year deal and T.O. knew that even if this year he is had cheap, he is going to light it up and cash back in by raising his price tag.

Pretty much summed up all my thoughts about this K – good piece of writing! Finally, they did something, anything to show they want to be competitive. If this fails, so be it. At least they tried.
My biggest concern: We talked a lot about Buffalo becoming a more run dominate/power running team. I am afraid with the addition of TO, Schonert is going to forget this and we’re going to see too much shotgun and passing as we did in 2008.

At least they tried.
If nothing good comes of the move on the field, we can at least applaude them for going down swinging. To keep the analogy going, I’m sick of watching this franchise go down on strikes looking. If you want to win, you’ve gotta be more proactive. At least this move shows they are willing to do that, finally…
I still hope we try to run it early and often. It’s just nice to have another receiving option, finally. Some of the bigger problems with Schonert was predictability and not calling enough runs in the red zone. Of course, now we have a TD machine in Owens, so the latter part probably won’t change. We need a well balanced offense, something that makes the Lynch/Jackson combo the focal point. TO and Lee can still get theirs, even if we are more of a run oriented team, I’d beleive.
