T.O. does more for Bills than meets the eye
In no particular order, here is a run down of benefits Terrell Owens arrival in Buffalo will have for the Bills organization and fanbase. In short, reasons why you should all embrace him with open arms.
1.) The Cause - First and foremost, the arrival of Terrell Owens will bring, and it already has, an endless national media spotlight to Buffalo. This will come in the form of interviews with Bills brass, players, nationally televised games, NFL Network games, mention on ESPN shows, and more. With this national spotlight gloriously shining on Buffalo everyone at OBD and others, such as Jim Kelly, will finally have their megaphone by which to make their case for keeping our beloved Bills right where they belong in Buffalo. Nobody wants to move a relevant NFL team and its a lot harder to allow the Bills to leave Buffalo when they are not 10 years deep in the basement, at this point we can call it dungeon, of NFL obscurity, of being irrelevant.
2.) We Find out What we Have - Nobody's really mentioned yet that the front office may have thrown Terrell Owens his one year deal as an experiment of sorts. We will know definitively what we have in Trent Edwards by this time in 2010, a quarterback who can take us to the promise land in time or not. If Trent Edwards can not produce like a star with Terrell Owens and Lee Evans and potentially a major tight end addition, then he is not the answer and it is time to move on. Owens is suited perfectly for Edwards' talents, and OBD knows it. He is incredible in the quick passing game and works well with accurate passers with a fast release. He was magnificient in the 49ers West Coast offense and excels at running slant routes and burning the secondary with yards after the catch. Terrell Owens saves the front office years of waiting and questioning if Trent is the future. We will know at the end of the season and if heaven forbid Trent fails to deliver, the front office can ship him out with Dick Jauron and the coaching staff and move on in the search for the next great Buffalo quarterback.
3.) Players will want to come to Buffalo - As was painfully obvious prior to the signing of Owens, Buffalo's undesirability to free agents was a problem which hamstrung the team's ability to acquire the talent it wanted in the off-season. This problem seemed to worsen over the last half decade as Buffalo, in the eyes of megastars, went from being a boring, cold city but a team rich in tradition where one could make a legacy, to a boring, cold city with a team that was a bottom dwelling loser where careers went to hide. Terrell Owens is going to enter 2009 with the greatest determination of his career and when T.O. wants to prove people wrong, in terms of physical performance, he proves them wrong. If Owens comes to Buffalo and emerges as one of the NFL's top stories and defies the age logic by posting monster numbers and a Pro Bowl appearance, more free agents will look at Buffalo as a potential destination. It is a copy cat league and it only takes one domino to fall to start the reaction. Just look at how quickly things changed for New England or in the opposite direction for San Francisco. Owens can change other players attitudes towards Buffalo.
4.) Leadership - Yes, leadership. Before you chop my head off hear me out. How tired are Bills fans of leaders by word and not deed? Donte Whitner playoff guarantees and vocal leadership met only by missed plays. Chris Kelsay, a team captain and our hardest worker, but a 2 sacks a year starter. Well, Bills fans, say hello to a leader by deed and not by word. If you give it a chance, you just might like it. Steve Young has said it, Tony Romo has said it, Andy Reid has said it. Everywhere Terrell Owens has been those around him, whatever their personal feelings about the guy, have all emphatically noted that they have never been around a man who works as hard, perpares as hard, and practices as hard as Terrell Owens. He then goes out on game day and produces, a living example that success can be achieved if you work as hard as you can. Owens is a demon on the pracitce field, in the gym and on Sunday's. Our young team, especially our young offense, is desperate for a veteran to teach them how to play like professionals. Marshawn Lynch, James Hardy, Trent Edwards, Steve Johnson, and more will be treated to a living example of a 35 year old man who has been to the Super Bowl, holds NFL records (he will pass Andre Reed for 6th most receptions of all time with his first catch as a Bill, fitting) and has been to multiple Pro Bowls and still, at his age, is working harder and longer than they are. Hardy and others will begin to emulate his work ethic and habits, ask any receiver that has played with him. Owens will be playing with the biggest chip he's ever had on his shoulder and our young squad will be there to see how a real professional prepares himself when he wants to win. Many have pointed out that Terrell Owens divides locker rooms. The reason is because he is a leader who divides the team because half the team is loyal to him and half to someone else. There is nobody in Buffalo for Terrell Owens to compete with as the locker room leader of this team. He is the elder statesman on a team chock full of 26 and under players and is by far the most talented man in the room. Without competition for leadership, we may just find that Terrell Owens will cherish the opportunity to be the unquestioned leader of a young, hopeful team on the rise which will look to him for direction: an offensive version of Ray Lewis. His Hall of Fame legacy is still in doubt, and the chance to successfully rally and lead a young, talented squad will cement his place in the Hall of Fame.
This is all on a one year contract, it is a win - win for Buffalo and Terrell Owens. Buffalo gets a super star who has to behave and produce in order to up his price in addition to the reasons mentioned above and Terrell Owens has the opportunity to make his mark on a young team, solidfy his Hall of Fame status, and re-gain his mega money status on the open market.
I'm excited Rumblers. I am very excited.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

completely concur
after realizing in the last few years that we are Buffalo, a city and a franchise that isn’t on the same playing field as everyone else in the NFL. For this kind of excitement first of all to come to our franchise and us fans is a breath of fresh air. Secondly, to finally add a threat opposite of Lee is so great to see. Thirdly, you hit the nail on the head with this statement and maybe the single biggest reason I have clamored for offensive weaponry for Trent:
Terrell Owens saves the front office years of waiting and questioning if Trent is the future. We will know at the end of the season and if heaven forbid Trent fails to deliver, the front office can ship him out with Dick Jauron and the coaching staff and move on in the search for the next great Buffalo quarterback.
This makes us see what Trent is or isn’t. I hate the idea of having Ryan Fitzpatrick as the backup, so I hope Edwards doesn’t get hurt. But, this speeds up the process and if Trent is our guy, this will be the year he has to show it….period
MARVelous
Let's say the same about Jauron, though
If the Bills don’t make the playoffs this year, it’s not just time to move on from Edwards. If Jauron is our guy, it’s about damn time he showed it.
as the idea settles in
and you really start to realize that this season is put up or shut up time for Trent the importance of the 2009 for so many members of the Bills is astounding.
Trent Edwards, Dick Jauron, Turk Schonert, Terrell Owens, Jason Peters, and Aaron Schobel are technically all in prove yourself now modes.

Turk Schonert for sure. I think he needs to step up to bat and coach up Trent against 3-4 defenses.

Your post actually has me believing I should give OBD even more credit for this move. With the way things have gone in so far this offseason, it’s as if the Bills brass are giving DJ & his staff along w/ Trent Edwards the opportunity to win or go home. This might even answer some questions about Lee Evans. He got the $$$, he now has a viable threat opposite of him, now remind us again how great you are Lee.
Excellent comments about Trent. We will know by the end of next season if he is “the guy”.
Everywhere Terrell Owens has been those around him, whatever their personal feelings about the guy, have all emphatically noted that they have never been around a man who works as hard, perpares as hard, and practices as hard as Terrell Owens.
We know what T.O. can bring to the offense, but he also has the potential to make our young secondary better at the same time. Our young guys are going to have to face him everyday in OTA’s, Camp, practice etc. I think this will make them that much better come Sundays.
We may be putting too much stock and one guy and his impact to the team, but as of right this second it can’t look at it any differently.
There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?
I like your point about our secondary playing against T.O.

Nice read poz
But, I think you have had too much sunshine blown up your …….
1.
an endless national media spotlight
Is the media predicting this to be a good thing for the Bills? Or, are they waiting for the train wreck? Can you say rubber neckers!!!
2.
We will know definitively what we have in Trent Edwards
We would have found that out anyway. I bet Scuba Steve isn’t jumping up and down about TO coming to B-lo.
3.
Players will want to come to Buffalo
I don’t think so. There are at least as many players who don’t like TO as there are those who do like TO. TO can’t change the weather either. Winning is the only way that TO can help us become more attractive to free agents.
4.
There is nobody in Buffalo for Terrell Owens to compete with as the locker room leader of this team
If that is true, we are in deep crap!!!! While I agree TO works hard and prepares well, I hope this will not be “his” team. He has never shown me that he is a leader of men. Leaders don’t throw their teammates under the bus publicly, even if they deserve it.
The idea of drafting Pettigrew at #11 makes my hemorrhoids flare up!!!!
making it his team for one year couldn't hurt
its better than it staying Chris Kelsay’s team!

I agree. TO’s problem is that he has the emotional mindset of a 10 year old. I think the way you keep him on his best behavior is to treat him like you would treat a 10 year old.
Trent should give what he gets!
If he gets respect, then give it. You can’t let TO use your man berries as a chew toy!
The idea of drafting Pettigrew at #11 makes my hemorrhoids flare up!!!!
A real leader does whats best for the team. If Trent has a good game, but WRs drop balls, other players fumble, nobody gets open, the OL has a bad game or for whatever other reason the offense can’t produce, the best thing that Edwards can do is fall on the sword and take responsibility even when it isn’t his fault. In the same way, Trent has to put the team first with TO. He shouldn’t care how TO treats him unless it effects the team as a whole and his repsonse to whatever TO does needs to be in the team’s best interest and not whatever puts TO in his place.
Trent needs to be the leader on that team
The Cowboys got rid of TO because they had to choose between him and Romo.
You can’t let T.O. use your man berries as a chew toy!
and we are talking about who should be the leader of this team this year.
You can’t let T.O. use your man berries as a chew toy!
Obviously Trent has to be the guy that everybody looks to in the huddle during games. But every team has more than one leader. Trent has to make sure that he and TO get along and if they don’t that is what will create problems because certain guys will view TO as a leader and that is what splits locker rooms. Keep TO happy at any cost (other than throwing to him when he is covered because he thinks you aren’t getting him the ball enough) and you can have multiple leaders on offense.
fair enough
So is it your opinion that Garcia, McNabb, and Romo handled TO wrong? Help me out with this, when TO comes off the field and starts yelling at Edwards for not seeing him open, what should Edwards do?
You can’t let T.O. use your man berries as a chew toy!
From what I can remember from the Garcia situation, TO put him in an awful spot and I don’t think he handled it well. Then again, I jsut find Garcia to be annoying and he hasn’t been that great of a teammate for a number of different teams too. TO was in SF for forever and if given enough time that guy will find a way to destroy every lockeroom he is a part of.
I don’t think McNabb handled TO well at all. TO put him in a really tough spot too, but I thought McNabb tried to hard to make sure everyone knew that he was the guy and TOs feelings get hurt so easily (again, the emotions of a 10 year old) that I just don’t think you can say bad things to or about TO.
I thought Romo did an awesome job handling TO and Edwards should be taking notes. Romo got a couple of great seasons from TO before he started to really collapse lately with some of his comments last year. The goal with a guy like Owens isn’t to keep him on his best behavior, it’s like when you bring your kid to a party and your only goal is to avoid embarrasment until you get home, so if your kid wants something you are probably going to give it to him. The Bills just need to survive a season with TO in the locker room and they can do that if Trent pretends to be buddies with the team obliterater.
Just a thought
and kind of a question….but didn’t TO start acting up this year because the Cowboys couldn’t get him the ball when Brad Johnson and Brooks Bollinger were forced into the lineup? In the 3 games Romo missed, TO had 12 catches for 100 yards and a TD. In the first 3 games once Romo was back, TO had 17 catches for 349 yards and 2 TD’s.
I don’t know, I just seem to remember it getting bad when Romo was hurt and then eventually snowballing as the entire team fell apart….
~K
"I’m Kurupt with Buffalo Rumblings. I am worth hundreds!"
I’m sure that was part of it, but TO’s two big quotes that ESPN couldn’t shut up about were when he said he wasn’t involved enough in the offense after he was thrown at like 15 times and still had a terrible game. And when he claimed that Romo and Witten were making up their own plays and they were such good friends that they weren’t including him and even intentionally leaving him out.
Joe, I think that what needs to be done is give T.O. a clean slate. If the Bills go into the situation that as soon as T.O. does something we don’t like, (celebrates too much, calls somebody out in the locker room) he gets ripped a new one, then they shouldn’t have signed him in the first place. They have to keep him in check yes, but they can’t treat him like a 10 time offender for his first offense here.
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
About point #3
Remember the Tony Gonzalez fiasco last season at the trade deadline? He was allegedly so desperate to get out of Kansas City that he was willing to go anywhere…and then he refused deals to the Bills and Falcons? Do we really want to go through that again?
Love him or hate him, even if he bombs on the field or succeeds beyond our wildest expectations, if someone like TO can play in Buffalo as a free-agent pickup, then other high profile players will do the same instead of running away.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
Well, sure, if you want to believe bigots like CBS’s Clark Judge who believe that signing with the Bills automatically presumes you can’t get a job anywhere else.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
Come on, I don’t get everything I believe from the media. I hated working in TV so much I walked away from the job.
But honestly, who else was actually serious about signing TO?
No one who made it publicaly known
Don’t forget that ALOT of teams run via PR, so if your fan base and the media make claims that you won’t or shouldn’t be pursuing a particular player WILL factor into how a team acts. Alot of teams where being bandied about by the media as not pursuing Owens, even though no official press release by the teams actually said so. Teams are not above claiming one thing while doing another.
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
We'll never know.
Because a team would be morons to let it out now.
A) They lost him to the Bills.
B) They didn’t sign a serious receiving threat.
C) They can tell the fanbase that they would never think of bringing in a cancer like that.
But I guarantee that Snyder was considering it, no matter what the reports or fans say. He’s been dying for a star wideout for years. The Raiders would have given him a shot. Wouldn’t surprise me if the Vikings considered him after losing out on TJ and Coles, they dealt with Moss for years. There’s a lot of teams out there that would have tried doing exactly what we did.
I think TO got multi year cheap deals elsewhere but wanted a one year deal so he could have a monster year and cash in next year ala Panda.

but seeing Trent with T.O. shows more of what we have in Trent. Cuz if he can’t produce with the weapons he has now, and the likely addition of a pass-catching TE in this April’s draft, then we know he won’t. I hope the gun-shy MNF against the Browns Trent is dead and gone, cuz if he shows up in 2009 the Bills are royally screwed

I have a question with this whole TO thing...
Do we have a top 5 recieving corps in the league now? Do we have a top 3? Top 2? Im afraid to think how good this group of recievers actually is.
by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Mar 8, 2009 5:28 PM EDT reply actions
Top 5
at least regarding our starters…
AZ has the best, I think there’s little doubt
I’d put New England #2
After that, it’s anybody’s guess.
-Denver’s is very good with Marshall and Royal. I’d say TO/Evans is better, but a year or two from now that duo may be considered better.
-Green Bay has a deep group, but isn’t as top heavy.
-Pittsburgh’s duo isn’t that flashy, but they get the job done. If you want a couple of winners who make plays when their team needs them the most, Ward/Holmes would be right up there.
-Houston’s is solid, mostly because Andre Johnson is so awesome. Kevin Walter is no slouch though.
-I’d throw Atlanta’s up in the conversation too, simply because I think Roddy White is the most underrated WR in the league. Jenkins, Douglas and Robinson make it a pretty deep group.
-Minnesota’s should also get a mention, simply because Berrian and Housh should complement each other well. Sidney Rice is a good player too.
In the end, I’d rank our starters 3rd overall behind AZ and NE. That’s pretty good company to be keeping.
As an entire unit, top to bottom, I may be inclined to slip GB’s ahead of us, at least on some days. If Hardy and Johnson step it up this year, we’ll definitely be ahead of the Pack and may even be able to get mention as #2. Who’d have ever thunk that would be possible?

I think our recieving corps is going to be great, I think we have a chance of having a top three unit. Lee Evans and Terrell Owens, who’s #1 and who’s #2? I don’t think it matters,, I think it is one of the best tandems in the NFL. Josh Reed- not a great option at #2, but A solid #3 guy. Roscoe Parrish- for a guy 4 down on the depth chart, he has great moves and playmaking ability. Steve Johnson- showed promise, can make big catches. James Hardy- If he’s back from his injury his understanding of the offense should be there, it wasn’t last year. He should be able to make plays.I think our top two is a great combination, and I think our complete corps is a great combination. It’s going to be difficult to cover a 5 WR set with the guys we have.
definitely a top 3 unit!
Could you imagine this wide receiver corps with Peyton Manning?? Look out! Evans and Owens are such a scary duo its amazing and Josh Reed will now carve up defenses.

I agree that we will really find out what we have in Trent, but I don’t think you really went into detail enough in explaining what we can find out. The biggest question that most fans have about Edwards is can he consistently throw down the field, or will he always just be a check down guy who takes a shot or two a game. When Robert Royal is your second best receiver at getting open 20+ yards downfield, it’s tough to blame the QB for not taking too many shots. WIth TO opposite Evans (and possibly a new TE on the field sometimes as well) Trent will have to make more throws that go 15-20 yards downfield (and hopefully deeper than that a lot too). Whether or not Trent tries and succeeds at that will tell the Bills and their fans a lot about whether or not Trent is the real deal.
great points kaiser
Way to expand on that, I think you are 100% correct. Not only will he have to make a lot more 15-20 yard passes but he will have to prove that he can hit Lee Evans deep in stride in single man coverage

Yeah, if Trent can’t get the ball down the field with Evans and TO as his WRs then you can pretty much give up on him ever becoming a great quarterback and you can come to the conclusion that he is just a game manager and not a guy to build a championship team around.
lets hope hes not Kelly Holcomb part 2
I believe in Trent though, I think hes in for a great season. Lets get him a tight end.
"Gooood…..let the apathy take root…" - Ron from NM
Trent didn’t have any problem hitting deep balls in stride this past season. Not only Evans but i think of Action Jackson’s route against the Broncos.
The problem was in receivers getting open.

They have that player now.

the prospect has me drooling! With Scheffler on board there can be no doubt that our talent level on offense is nearly on par with the Patriots and definitely better than the Dolphins and Jets. It’s all on Trent now.

Good post Poz
Well said…
I think your discussion on Edwards is spot on. Really, everything is in place (assuming we add a solid, contributing TE) for him to succeed this season. If he remains tentative at times and can’t produce with the talent around him this season, will he ever? It’s make or break for Jauron, that’s for sure, but I think it’s definitely worthy to say the same about Trent. I just hope he doesn’t get hurt again, though that may just be a sign he can’t be the guy since he can’t stay on the field. I kind of cringe thinking about Ryan Fitzpatrick having to come in. It’s too bad we didn’t go after a better backup QB, ah well. If Trent is mediocre again this year, then it could be very likely that his starting job will be flushed out the door with Jauron and Schonert. It’d be hard to argue that, unless his season is disrupted by injuries.
As I continue to think about it, I’m not sure Owens’ signing and even future success would entice any FA’s to play here in the future. BUT it could give them some food for thought and make more players consider the possibility, which is probably more than we get now.
And wouldn’t it be great to have a leader on the field for once? By example, I mean. I’m sick of players who talk, but can’t back it up. Hopefully, TO can back up all the talk, we need it.

I could easily argue against that. Trent torched several 4-3 defenses last year, and was gobbled up by 3-4 defenses. If we see that same pattern, then Schonert is the one who needs to be flushed, and Edwards just needs a better OC.

Good post!
Great point about Edwards. However, I’d have to respectfully disagree with the need of a “major TE addition”.
1)I think Fine will be fine. Last year was his rookie year, and he could turn out to be good at catching passes as well. Why not give him a chance to prove? I think he has the potential to do it.
2)I don’t care how good people think Pettigrew is, but he will not be a playmaker as big or as good as Marshawn Lynch is in 2009. The best compliment to Evans and Owens is not a receiving TE, but a great running game that includes a stud playmaking running back. Lynch has shown he is a playmaker. So what we need to do is to make sure we can also establish the power running game. Fine, being a great blocking TE, is valuable to Lynch’s success. I’d be more concern of getting a good LG (eg: Waters) than I am with adding a TE at this point.
Bills fan half way around the world

The fact is we still need a back-up TE. SO drafting a guy doesn’t mean he’ll beat out fine. Plus we are supposeduly moving to a 2 TE set so they could both see playing time. The new TE and Fine.
