YouTube Saturday: Round one OT prospects
Offensive tackle Jason Peters' future with the Buffalo Bills, to put it lightly, is on thin ice. Bills fans everywhere are bracing for a trade of the two-time Pro Bowl lineman - and if the team is lucky, said trade will happen sooner rather than later.
How are we preparing for his likely departure? Looking at rookie offensive tackles, of course. We ranked them earlier this week; now it's time to watch them. Showcased in today's version of YouTube Saturday: Mississippi OT Michael Oher, Alabama OT Andre Smith, Virginia OT Eugene Monroe and Baylor OT Jason Smith (the latter three appearing after the jump).

What’s with Jason Smith blocking downfield so much? Poor red circle can’t keep up with him.

So is there anybody that will be available at 11, fills a Bills need, and is worth that pick that:
1) Doesn’t have an extensive injury history
2) Has started for at least 2 years at his position, not a one one year wonder
3) Doesn’t have rumors of steroid use
4) Doesn’t have motivational or weight issues

No. But no prospect is perfect this year.

I think Oher fits that perfectly. But if you were to throw intelligence and intagibles into the mix, then he has some flaws. I think that anyone who criticizes his motivation is nuts. Oher’s dad was murdered and his mom went to jail when he was 7. He had 12 brothers and sisters who he was seperated from and spent his childhood fending for himself, ignoring school entirely and running away from foster homes. He was finally adopted as a high schooler where his life really turned around. Depending on who you ask, he is either a really smart guy who started his formal education at a very late age, or a pretty stupid kid with a great success story.

How would you rank those 4 as importance for the Bills with 1 being the most important? This is for the 11th pick only.
I’d say:
Injury
starter
motivational
steroid

I would put talent at the top of the list.

You could even break talent down into size/frame, upper and lower body strength, footwork and hand technique, quickness/athleticism and they would still be numbers 1-4 of what is important.
It’s tough to decide whether injuries or work ethic are more important because you have to evaluate those on an individual basis. You can’t list prospects based on work ethic and durability. Those are more factors, like Michael Oher has never missed a game and that is reassuring or Brian Cushing’s injuries are a red flag type thing.

I have to go on record saying that I would absolutely “love” it if the Bills were able to call Andre Smiths name @ #11. From what I saw of him in college and now some of these highlights just back up what many thought about him before the combine debacle and his shirtless 40. :)
If you watch that clip the kid is left alone many times 1 on 1 and stays engaged the whole time. He gets to the second level very well, continues to drive his man back until the whistle is blown, seems to have pretty good foot work and takes on the initial defensive punch very well. With some correct conditioning, I think this kid could be a Pro Bowl LT for years to come.

I like Smith a lot but I’m still not sure who I’d rather have between him and Oher. Although Smith seems more dominant in the highlight videos above, he does remind me a lot of Jason Peters in terms of maturity and work-ethic which scares me a little bit. Oher is also a fantastic natural athlete.

Agreed....and it seems that Oher was a key blocker in many of those plays
they seem to pass/run to his side a lot. Maybe it is just because it is a highlight reel.

I am high on Oher as well, but, nowhere near where I was before the college season. He somewhat disappointed in 2008. Also, if you watch Ohers video, he really broked down at times and he doesnt sustain blocks all the way through like Smith. Is Oher going to be good, probably, but, what scares me is that he really isnt that great of run blocker. When getting to the 2nd level he is very inconsistant at bending his knees and driving those LB’s or DB’s into the ground. He struggles at time, IMO, at getting under their pads. Whereas, other than Andre’s possible character and drive concerns (which I think are arguably blown out of porportion by media), he has all the trates to be an excellent all around LT and even better than our current guy in Jason Peters.

I am OK with Smith too, but I think there is a better chance of Oher being there at #11

The highlight reel is one factor, but I would also assume that Alabama’s OL is probably better across the board than Ole Miss’ so the Rebels must have had to rely on Oher more than Bama relied on Smith.

I can see why all 4 are highly rated
and can also see why all 4 have some questions marks.
Monroe looks to be most technically sound, using his hands well and not allowing defenders to get into his chest. He will need to add a little more strength, it appears, but he’s going to be an excellent, dependable player for a long time.
Hard to get a handle on Jason Smith. He does a great job finishing blocks, but also seems out of control a bit. He’ll need to improve on his technique, IMO, since that’s not going to work in the pros. I wish there were better tapes on him available, not that it matters though, he seems to be going top 5 regardless.
Honestly, Andre Smith looks as good as any of them, BUT he has the biggest and most red flags out there. His weight is going to be an issue in the pros unless he slims down some, but he’s as talented and gifted as any of them. Along with his weight, his head will remain a concern. After this Peters fiasco, I wonder how willing the FO is going to be to go after another flighty player.
A piece of advice Andre: Don’t make everything smaller, I don’t wanna generalize that way… tighter……..We don’t want you to lose weight, we just want you to be healthy. Ya know, by eating less. We would just like it if you go home and step on the scale, and write down how much you weigh, and subtract it by like, 20.
Oher is also very, very good. He does get pushed back some and needs to work more on using his hands, but he sure looks to have the highest ceiling of the bunch. He already is a good run blocker and good pass blocker, so some refinement and technique improvement will make him an excellent pro.
If we do go OT #11, getting one of these guys will be a good thing. I still think Peters is head and shoulders above these guys right now, but the future is bright for all of them. It’s too bad what it’s come to for the Bills….

Of Those 4
I think it boils down to Andre Smith and Michael Oher…. edge to Andre Smith. Oher has quicker feet than Smith but isn’t nearly as strong. Oher finishes blocks better than Smith in the run game but Smith moves his man more and is AMAZING at blocking in space.
As far as, perhaps, the most important aspect of a LT goes… pass blocking, I think Andre Smith will be more successful in the NFL. Oher has much better footwork, but even with his quick feet, he let pass rushers get much closer to Jevan Snead than Smith ever did John Parker Wilson. He needs more strength. Even though Smith had sloppy footwork and blocking technique he still never let anyone close to Wilson until Florida put a wrinkle in their defense with Spikes at DE. Smith’s strength and ability to anchor together with his superior reach just makes the sky the limit for him.
Furthermore, Smith’s dominance was consistence across the level of competition… while Oher struggled more against better teams and defensive lines.
