Worst Off-season ever?
Like everyone else, after signing T.O. and with lots of hope heading for the draft and my favorite prospects, I had a lot of hope once again for the Bills in 2009. But is anyone else beginning to doubt the Bills will even win 6 games in 2009? I'm thoroughly frustrated with this team for the first time since I've been a fan.
Here's a recap:
**We cut Derrick Dockery and let BOTH of our Centers go into free agency, leaving huge holes along the line (Not that I think any of them were any good). We plan to fill them with a journeyman center from Carolina (who I'm actually very hopeful about), and either Kirk Chambers (who wasn't good enough to start last year) Demetrius Bell (who didn't play organized football until 2 years ago) or a journeyman Guard who hasn't been good enough to be a consistent starter anywhere.
** Jason Peters, need I say more? No matter how this turns out, unless the Bills sign Peters they lose in this situation. Even if they sign him and overpay they lose. I want Peters on this team. We may get draft picks, but picking a tackle and expecting him to start THIS year is incredibly risky.
**Marshawn Lynch is arrested and suspended for 3 games
**Donte Whitner is arrested, charges will be filed, and could face suspension.
**Ko Simpson arrested way back when," I'm worth millions." Enough said.
(Any one beginning to feel like the Bengals yet?)
**Outside of Terrell Owens we did not get ANY better in free agency. We still have gapping holes at strongside linebacker, guard/center, defensive end, tight end, possibly tackle. How many guys can we draft and expect to start right away? One or two?
It just feels like there is NOTHING positive around the Bills. Absolutely nothing at all. I still love this team and remaining hopeful. Realistically the Bills have done nothing to instill confidence they are going to win THIS season. That means we're looking at a coaching change, which means a philosophy change, and ultimately a new "3-year building process." By then the Bills could be in Toronto.
Bottom line, we're going backwards. We may look back at this offseason and consider it our worst since we traded for Rob Johnson. Yes its THAT bad.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Meanwhile, NFL evaluators think we had the BEST off-season this year. So… I’ll stick with them until further notice.

The date I have on it says today.
after all the other stuff. Plus that article focuses on free agency.

And once again we have a national media source spouting the same old tired retread lie…that Owens was signed because Bills attendance is poor. The Bills were 7th in the league in attendance last season despite the Toronto debacle, despite not making the playoffs in ten years and despite playing in the league’s second smallest market. Hell, the Giants or the Patriots couldn’t do that well if they were out of the playoffs for a decade. Does the national sports media really think that if they repeat the lie often enough and loudly enough it suddenly converts it into the truth?
Failure to do even basic research into the issues jeopardizes this publication’s credibility. Why should you stick with them?

Ok a few things I disagre with
First of all I think this has been a very good offseason, as long as the Peters situation gets resolved with at least a first round draft pick, I will keep that opinion.
We plan to fill them with a journeyman center from Carolina
Journey man? He’s only been with the Panthers throughout his entire career. Even if he was mostly a backup, he did start a large number of games and proved himself to be a verycapable centre. He may have been a backup, but a hourney man he is not. But like you, I have high hopes for him.
I highly doubt that Whitner will get suspended, and as for Ko Simpson, he’s got a year left, then he’s gone.
We may get draft picks, but picking a tackle and expecting him to start THIS year is incredibly risky.
I ENTIRELY disagree. If there is one situation that has proven that is is safe to start a first round draft pick in and not take a risk it is LT. Well in rescent years at least.
Outside of Terrell Owens we did not get ANY better in free agency. We still have gapping holes at strongside linebacker, guard/center, defensive end, tight end, possibly tackle.
Outside TO, there weren’t any FA’s that we could have signed that would have filled any of those holes.
I’l agree that at a glance ths has been a bad offseason for us, but if you take the time to look at what happened, the FA’s signed, the FA’s available, then you’ll see that we’re actually having a very good offseason… now lets just resolves this Peters situaton.

I agree w/ your entire post canadian, except the fact that we could have resigned crowell, and i think we would all feel much better about our SAM

I’ll absolutly agree with you there. I would have loved to re-sign Crowell. But OBD didn’t want him back and apparently he didn’t want to be here anymore, so that wasn’t a possibility. Who I would have made a strong push for is Peterson.

Let's play "glass is 1/20 full".
I might as well join in and heap on the “praise”. For some reason, the number 20 is on my mind.
Here’s a good one: The 2009 NFL draft class is weak at the top and has no blue-chip prospects. The Bills picked a bad year to have a high draft pick, although they consistently pick around this same spot every year, don’t they? This year, teams are more likely to get more bang for their buck later in the first round.
However, you never know how the draft will end up. If Sanchez is available at #11, the pick could become a hot spot and the Bills could benefit by trading down and obtaining equal or better value. So, maybe the glass is actually 1/19 full :-(
Great plays don't make great players; great players make great plays.

I have zero problem with the Bills dumping those stiffs, Flower and Dookie. I think the Bills could plug me and K into those roster spots and we could call it an upgrade.
We may get draft picks, but picking a tackle and expecting him to start THIS year is incredibly risky.
There were several rookie tackles that came out of last years draft and not only started for their teams but excelled. Clady, Albert, Long, and Brown all from last years draft. Is starting a rookie in Peters place ideal? No. But just in terms of getting rid of a headache it would be a big plus.
Ko Simpson arrested way back when," I’m worth millions." Enough said.
Ko could get cut after the draft and it wouldn’t be a huge loss. I’m not that upset about this.
Lets not forget that there is still a long way to go before the season starts. A lot can happen, good and bad. I’m not ready to say this has been a bad offseason yet even if I thought everything was bad so far, which I don’t.

Whitner
Donte Whitner is arrested, charges will be filed, and could face suspension.
It’s unlikely that Goodell would suspend someone of (and I know this sounds odd considering the recent circumstances) high character like Whitner. This seems more like a one-time disaster situation for Whitner then an impending theme from a guy who has been a model young NFL player in his first years in the league. Even a guy with a reputation for trouble in the past like Marshawn didn’t get suspended for his first infraction, so I doubt you’ll see a suspension for Whitner.
That being said, we are the Bills so getting kicked again while we’re down would not be surprising here…

My uncle told me a humorous, yet tragic, story once.
Man is found dead in his home. It is an apparent suicide. The note at the scene says only one thing: “I can’t take the Broncos fumbling anymore.”
True story.

Yeah, I just disagree with every opinion you have.
The facts are facts but the conclusions you draw aren’t that great. It’s just more of the eternal pessimistic attitude. Unless we’re winning the Super Bowl every year people will complain.

I'm not optimistic about this team and even I disagree
Worst ever? We’ve had some pretty bad off-seasons me thinks…
plus…way too early to tell…draft, and perhaps more free agent additions could be on the way

I think they have had a very smart offseason so far
most of there pick ups made sense, and they didnt’ over pay for any of them. I"m pretty proud of OBD, considering for the past few years i have grumbled about them over paying for the talent they brought in.
Are we drafting Dino's now?

Idk, I just dont know. In my eyes it diffenitly looks as if it could be that bad. There is a lot that could go wrong from here. I agree i think right now we have to many holes to fill with one draft. I think we could have kept Dock for one more year instead of opening up another hole. however the crystal ball i bought at wal-mart doesnt give me enough info to say whether we will be 6-10, 3-13 or 11-5. so i will have to get back to you after the draft.
