Much has been made about the Buffalo Bills' legal issues this off-season, from Marshawn Lynch's arrest and suspension to Ko Simpson's New Year's Day proclamation that he's "worth millions" to Donte Whitner's alleged involvement in a near-riot in Cleveland this past weekend.  Fans and local media are beginning to question whether or not the Bills value character players and/or are proficient at finding those types of players.

We don't want to, but we'll also mention that former Bills RB Travis Henry is currently facing up to ten years in prison and a $4 million fine after pleading guilty to a cocaine-related drug charge.  Yikes.

Thanks to a nice lead this morning from Chris at Arrowhead Pride, we can take a look at all of the Bills' player arrests since the year 2000.  Data is from an excellent database set up by the San Diego Union-Tribune.  Throughout the past near-decade, the Bills have had twelve separate incidents in which a player has been arrested.  Three players are repeat offenders - and unfortunately, two of them are current Bills.

Note that of the twelve incidents, a solid seven of them have occurred since the current coaching/front office regime (Marv Levy included) took over in early 2006.

All twelve incidents are outlined after the jump.  Take a stroll down memory lane this morning, folks - and we'll leave this open to discussion in much the same fashion that WGR 550 has over the past day or two - how important is player character to you?  Which incident irritates/fascinates you most?  Do you even remember some of these guys?

OJ played for us 30 years ago.

I don’t know how relevant his arrest record is.

who? I don’t know who that is? nope. never heard of him…lalalalalalalalalalalalalala

The rest of you go get the goods on Stan. His mom grounded him once for setting something on fire. Let's find out what that something was and then lie and say it was a puppy.

Well, there goes anything I would have said- and better phrased too. Well done.

Penn Staters belong at Penn State. The problem with a lot of kids is they just don’t know they are Penn Staters yet.

I agree, but...

I do not hold “these people to a higher standard because they can play sports”, I (mistakenly) hold them to higher standard because they are making more money in a year than most of us make in a lifetime (except maybe Ko Simpson).

But they aren't being paid to be model citizens.

They got their money by playing football. Just like a shoe salesman doesn’t have to be a model citizen away from the store, he just has to be able to sell shows in the store.

Agreed

I think that we’re being a little unfair to these guys, heck sometimes I think that some of us would criticize them for a speeding ticket. I’m not worried about this team at all, and won’t be worried until it starts to affect their play on the feild.

Compare/Contrast

I went to the link and looked at about 8-10 teams and the Bills had more incidents than some and less than others. The Bills have 12, while the Bengals have 29. Not that I like what is going on, but I think we are about the norm not only in football but in real life as was so nicely said by Mattrichwarren above.

Honestly

I’d take Lynch or Whitner over Peters in terms of character any day.

Lynch and Whitner made stupid young mistakes at/under the age of 23, they obviously have some growing up to do but on the field both are top notch character players who pour their heart into the game. Whether its Whitner being an on field leader, or Lynch pushing a pile for the touchdown. That’s what Levy talks about when he speaks of character.

Peters on the other hand selfishly sabotages his own team for his own goals, and when given the chance to play didn’t prove himself. He clearly puts himself above the team.

I believe character matters. I’d love to see the number of HOFs with arrests. I’d be willing to bet that ratio is a lot lower than a typical NFL team, and I’d be willing to bet that’s not coincidence.

I think there was this one HOF’er….can’t remember his name….he was brought up on murder charges….found guilty in civil court…what was his name? He just got put in jail for kidnapping. Damn it…..I think his name had something to do with fruit….aww this is gonna bother me all day now.

Exactly! ppl need to calm down on this character stuff. As long as they play well on the field, I think we should let it go.

by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 16, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

let's call a spade a spade

these guys are high profile, big money guys who have people drool over them everyday and they get whatever they want….they hang around the same crew they grew up with, have a ton of free time on their hands, and a lot of money to do stuff with…..And they are only 21-24 years old….It doesn’t bother me one bit. It’s a dicey business drafting these guys, but in no way do I think they owe it to me, you or anyone else to be held to a higher standard. It’s not their fault someone dumped $13 million on their laps….They’ll make these mistakes, you just hope they learn, re-motivate themselves and move on.

But what Jason Peters is doing is a different kind of crime. He’s lying to the Bills, to the fans and most importantly to himself. He’s being so selfish that he makes Jay Cutler seem like he should be the poster boy for “Team Work.” Jason Peters isn’t being “true to himself” and that’s what has me upset….he is undermining a franchise, a fanbase, and Dick Jauron, which is way worse than having a few too many at Ted Ginn’s house and thinking your invincible to the cops

Its unclear to me why Jason Peters should be in this conversation at all. I’m as frustrated as the next fan, but calling his dealings with the front office a crime seems a bit over the top.

We may think he’s lying or acting stupid or whatever, but he has every right to do what he’s doing, just as we have every right to hate him for it. But its not a crime; its just business.

Because this post is about character, and a guy who puts himself above his team and sabotages his team for personal gain is deserving of having his character questioned.

Yes and no

The post is about character and arrests and I would argue its mainly about arrests. I’m not saying you shouldn’t question his character, I just have difficulty reconciling the idea of comparing criminal behavior with contract negotiations. But thats just me.

Well, as to character, the Bills have really turned a corner by signing T.O.

by labill on Apr 16, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

T.O. has impeccable character...

he may whine about getting the ball and be competitive but he his only off-field incident of note was the sleeping pill thing. Nothing illegal.

Peters should be arrested for stealing the hearts out of Bills nation for the past year and a half...

Bills can’t say that they signed Peters back when he was undrafted and a TE because they new he was a high character guy. They were taking a flyer on the guy because of the potential to have an athletic big body on their team. If you remember, they cut him during first cuts and then put him on their practice squad for a year. Before he was promoted and played special teams and a little TE.

What we are seeing now is that Peters is as self-centered, lack of a team guy as almost anyone on any team in professional sports. There are a few guys like that league to league. TO being one of them, but I think Peters has now trumped him.

When the Bills sign high character guys they choose players like Chris Kelsay, Ryan Denny, Derrick Fine type of players that are good, but not great. They probably know that these guys are going to be in this league, but not guys who will make a tremendous difference in games.

So the predicament becomes… high character and lack of impact, or a question on character and the potential of a impact player when it comes to drafting.

Regarding Peters, we probably hoped he’d be a team player by us offering him the early 5 yr, 15 million dollar contract, but that has not worked out because of the $ signs that he and his agent only want to see no matter what the ramifications are for him, the franchise or for us as fans.

Well said Marvelous. A very good portion of them grew up w very little and have a hard time leaving that environment behind. Even young rich celebrities are pompous and think they are above the law, however they are not hanging around w the wrong crowd. These kids are very loyal to their boys as we all would be, but sometimes their boys are responsible for a bad situation or making a bad situation worse. These guys bust their balls for 2-5 years playing college ball and not getting paid a dime and then all of a sudden they are lottery winners. Its a tough transition. You just have to hope they are paying attention when the NFL pitches them on the do’s and dont’s of being a young, rich instant celebrity.

The repeat offenders are the ones to be concerned about. For instance, my guess is that Whitner will keep his nose clean from this point on. Marshawn on the other hand, is a little more concerning.

The thing that irritates me the most is that the Bills have given the impression that they would rather have high character guys. If players like Whitner who was drafted way too high, was supposed to be drafted for his character and leadership, and he can’t even excel in that area, that pisses me off. He certainly hasn’t excelled on the field.

The Bills would be better off just drafting the best possible talent they can get their hands on. At least they might have some wins to show for it, rather than a mediocre team AND all these arrests.

Innocent until proven guilty

surely being arrested is not relevent. Of the incidents listed above either no charges have been brought, they are still ongoing or a plea bargin was reached. Only one seems to have actually come to court and he was aquitted!
Whitner and Ko Simpson drunken idiots, not the only ones in the world and not convicted of anything, yet.
Lynch more stupid than evil, he has used up eight of his nine lives
I really think this is a mountain out of a molehill.

Football. Bloody Hell!!

Warren Sapp

- Is perfect example of a player that was passed up because he was smoking pot. How many players in the NFL don’t smoke pot, it comes down to how many get caught.
- I agree with one comment, Bills take such pride in drafting quality players, but if they are not even that good or overrated like Whitner, Bills front office is clueless.
- Cornelius Bennett got into trouble a few times, but at least he was worth the soap opera.
