"We find the [Buffalo Bills] organization's comments regarding the importance of character very interesting given their position on Fred Jackson. I think it's a fair statement to say that during his three years with the Bills, Fred has demonstrated his high character and that he is second to none in that department, to say nothing of his on-field contributions. Yet the organization is not making the concerted effort to lock in Fred as part of the team's long-term future. Public statements are great as long as you mean what you say."

Not sure what to make of this...
On one side Douglas is right for saying what he did, and the Bills should put their money where their mouth is and sign Jackson long term. But on the other hand Douglas (and Jackson) should show a little patience and realize the OBD has bigger fish to fry at the moment (Peters and the draft) and will (or should) get to Jackson after the draft. I have no inside info on the team, but even I have to think that signing Jackson long term is a priority for OBD.
Douglas and Jackson should show a little patience, they will get their pay day.

Agreed
You pretty much said all I came here to say. There is a time to deal with this matter, and this is not it. If the Bills don’t address it by training camp, then there are serious problems, but this is a bit early for Douglas and Jackson to speak up.

Good points

Not sure why all this Jackson news has been coming up lately. It’s April and the organization is preparing for the draft. Give it some time!

Disagree
I don’t buy the argument about not having time or “too busy preparing”. How much are these guys getting paid? Find an hour or two and sit down with Fred and Douglas and get something going. If there is another reason to wait, then fine. But don’t tell me your too busy to do your job.

They have exchanged offers and stuff.
It’s not like they are ignoring his phone calls. But yes, the draft is the top priority right now.

Good for Jerry Douglas!
Sticking his neck out for Fred, he deserves it. OBD deserves to get called out, because lets face it, Fred’s contract is not going to be hard to afford. I know, “patience, patience, Jason Peters is a bigger obligation, blah blah blah.” Bottom line is, Russ Brandon said the wrong thing and, he got called out, now give Fred his contract because we don’t have a RB right now… Or any “happy” RB’s for that matter. Plus i want Fred’s jersey, and I cant do that until we give him that contract. Now go Russ Brandon, forget Jason “Greedy” Peters for a day, and deal Jacksons contract.

Your point is?? Believe everything that an agent says and label the Bills as liars.
by Bob on Apr 16, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The point is the agent is right. The Bills have been blowing a lot of smoke about character, but that’s clearly not working out, and for all these supposed high character guys, they’re not even really getting many playmakers. Fred’s done awesome, and been a model citizen.

How do we know Buffalo isn't trying to do a long term deal for Jackson?
I don’t remember hearing about Evans’ deal before it was signed and announced. The same is true of Kelsay, Schobel, Stroud and others. Just because no one is talking about it doesn’t mean it isn’t happening behind the scenes. And I kind of like it that way.
Yes, I do think Jackson has earned a long term deal with money befitting a #2 RB.

Well, considering this came from his agent, I’m assuming that he’s not getting very far in his talks with the club…

Could this be the agents way of suggesting Buffalo’s overtures haven’t been ‘serious’ enough for his liking?
by Ron From NM on Apr 16, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Could it be his agent is demanding near #1 RB money for a guy who is a very solid #2, but not a #1?
That may be whats holding the talks up and he is using this to try and force Brandon onto the defensive in negotiations by making the fans get riled up.
I’ll worry about Freddy if he isn’t extended before camp.
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

Blather
Agents for professional athletes have a well earned reputation for being morally reprehensible. For this guy to pontificate on this matter is absurd. He had better hope and pray that his client does not have one beer too many and run a stop sign.

Jackson should fire this fool
or at least denounce his obnoxious statement. The Bills haven’t said they wont negotiate with Fred, it’s just one of a long list of things to be addressed. This stupidity just looks like Jackson trying to take unfair advantage of Lynch’s poor judgment. Douglass is a fool and his comments do nothing to help Fred’s negotiations.
by dzil on Apr 16, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ughhh
Just pay him, its not breaking the bank, he’s a proven player, he plays his butt off when on the field, and the guy wants to be here. Plus Lynch could get himself kicked off the roster at any point.
Stop bringing in over the hill running backs, and just sign Jackson long term for crying out loud.

Fred’s been hanging with JP and wants to be the leagues highest paid RB :)

Agreed.....I for one have not heard how much Jackson wants
Is Jackson asking for 1b RB money? We don’t know. “The Agent”, haha, should shut his pie hole to the media and negotiate behinds the scenes for now.

I don't like this
That is bad representation. The Bills will pay their guys, and have, and they shouldn’t be worried about getting a deal. The agent must not about the recent history of the Bills resigning and extending players mid season, and how they have given big contracts to key contributors.
Freddy has three games in which he will get the bulk of the carries. I think thats true even if we would have gotten Fred Taylor. Fred Jackson runs like a beast, in good or bad weather, and has always been productive when called upon. Even finishing the game strong with a big performance against NE (I know, there was no passing, but still admirable).
He is older than must "young runners, if that makes sense, and his agent is doing his due dilliegence in his own mind I’m sure…but if Fred Jackson rips off three one-hundred yard games, he will get an extension. I would not even be surprised if Buffalo can keep both of them in the near future. Lynch’s free agent stock possibly dropping because of off-the-field instances(probably not though). So, in conclusion, I’d say this is not the type of bull crap I want to be hearing right now
The Bills CAN win every game

I really hope they get Freddy signed, lets go OBD, lets give this guy a long term contract, he def. deserves it.

Both sides of this are wrong
The Bills are wrong for talking about the importance of character, but never really proving that. Talk is cheap, OBD.
Jackson’s agent is wrong for not only going public with this so quickly and at such a crazy time, but also for expecting Jackson to be worth such a long-term deal that it requires being talked about in this way. Remember, he only has a season and a half of experience. I’ve said it before, but I don’t think Jackson has totally earned a big, fat extension. When the team extends him, I won’t have any problems with it, but I also understand if they aren’t making him priority #1 any time soon. In the next month or so, give him his $2-3M per year, and be done with it. I really hope the agent isn’t expecting more than that….

Exactly, thats what I think Fred is worth as well
Give him a 2 mil a year base salary and a bunch of incentive clauses like carries, yards, receptions and TDs to boost that number into the 3 mil a season territory and give him some roster bonuses as well to keep the cash coming in. Thats solid money for a solid #2 guy.

Open question:
How much better does everyone think Marshawn is than Fred? People claim that RB’s and LB’s are a dime a dozen position, with a few exceptions. I think given the chance to prove himself, Fred Jackson could definitely be a starter in this league.
by jj24 on Apr 17, 2009 8:20 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don't think the gulf is that wide.
When Marshawn came into the league and had training camp with Jackson he supposedly said to himself “What am I even doing here? This guy is great.” FYI – Marshawn doesn’t make that much either. According to USA Today his cap hit last year was less than $2M including all bonuses earned.
