The Bills offseason gone forgotten to draft frenzy!?

Hello fellow fans.  This being my first fanpost I think I need to address this mock draft frenzy!  I am a fan of Brian and Rich's mock drafts, but as for the others I am left confused.  For years now when the Bills address free agency they sign players that are garunteed to contribute on the field opening day.  The Jason Peters trade has everyone in a panic for OT in this year's draft.  Have we all forgotten that the same situation came to foruition last year?  If we were lucky enough to land andre smith at 11 it would not be a bad pick, but I do not see Jaroun putting a rookie of any sort on Edwards backside this season.  Walker WILL move to right tackle again this year, leaving us to fill in his strong side of the field. I believe that this scenario leads us in another direction in this year's first round. Right OT can be grabbed in rounds 3-5.

I have long been waiting the dismissal of Chris Kelsey.  Lets face it he was terrible last year.  3 sacks (all in one game) which means he found one bum who he could finally beat during the season (aka Joe Staley).  I record all of the Bills games and felt compelled to bring up an unorthodox stat.  Kelsey has consistently fell for the Qb rollout worse than any De I have ever seen.  I went back through the tapes ( thats right folks seems crazy but I did) and found him with his pants down 33 times last season.  This is because he is so hungry to get a free sack or tackle that his football IQ disappears.  Not to mention he is extremely slow.  Of those 33 plays 28 of them were a gain and 23 were first downs!  I laugh at the notion of him being traded but I like Tampa to take the bait in their rebuild mode.

I have seen comments like trading youbouty? or him starting at nickelback?  Neither is happening folks.  He was a stud when healthy last year.  Drayton Florence is a Bill. Did we all forget that? He is a lock for the Nickel.

All this wind swirls around Pettigrew.  I love the Prospect, but knowing Schonert and the WR corps we have now, we might run the ball 15 times a game.  Blocking TE can be gotten in the middle of the draft.

With all of this said, pick 11 must be DE or OLB.  I love ayers for his versatility. Not to mention I think the contract won't be as big with a DE at this pick as OT. Just a Hunch.

Matthews Jr. is High among the rumblings community, but we did sign Pat Thomas.  Not a Household name, but hes got incredible upside and is double the athlete of Ellison.  Not to mention there must be a reason we kept our fifth round pick from last year around: Alvin Bowen.

If the Bills are to contend for the division this year, DE at 11 and Interior lineman at 28 or 42 is a must (my favorite Unger! Unger! Unger!).  I love that name.

Besides, when is the last time we drafted a franchise guard?  Ruben Brown ring a bell?

Roscoe Parrish.  Their are too many scenarios here to speculate where he ends up, but it will give us another pick.  The last time we were loaded with picks (mcgahee and spikes trades) we used them to move up and get someone in a panic. I see this happening again this year, although it is different management.

I am dying to here your comments, please enlighten me to another route?

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

welcome to rumblings

some good thoughts…….So you think they move Walker to LT and put Max Unger in at LG, then who plays RT?

Jauron and Schonert will not be throwing the ball 30-40 times a game like you might think. DJ loves the ball control offense, and Edwards dropping back that many times would be a disaster.

Anyone who thinks Kelsay would actually get something in return is either onto something or more likely “ON something.”

Pat Thomas “upside.” He career’d it with 48 tackles last year, has been in the league for 5 years, and isn’t even a lock to make the roster. We need to draft an OLB in rounds 1-3 for sure

Correction Walker will move to Left Tackle (wrote right tackle above

I think they draft a RT. Or Bell could step in, much like Peters did his first year.
I truly believe they will throw the ball ALOT. Our run game was inconsistent last year, and if they have success early with the passing game I can see schonert getting carried away.
Lets hope not though. Thomas is a hit or miss, I have a feeling he’ll be playing for us this year.

I agree

I thin Ayers will be a stud in this league. I reallly respect Mike Mayock’s knowledge, and he stated that 3 years from now Ayers will be the best player in this draft. He just seemed to start to get it last year. I think he is olny scratching the surface of his talent. I think at 28 we look for a LB or Unger. Second round would be a great time for Shawn Nelson. 4.56 in the 40 at the combine, and did anyone see how he put Mageluga on his butt in the senior bowl. Practice. I think that Ayers and Neslon are my 2 favorite prspects in the whole draft. The only thing that scares me about Pettigrew is he reminds me a lot of Kyle Brady

Offensive Line

I agree with you that we might not HAVE to draft an OT this year and as others have said our OL might be serviceable with what we’ve got (keyword: might). My only issue with this is that we are just putting it off until next year then…Walker is not a franchise LT and we need one. There’s little chance that happens via free agency, so that means we go into next years draft having to address the tackle position. I’d rather do it now while we’ve got the flexibility of a lot of picks and some depth in available talent.

I am against trading Roscoe, especially if for only a fourth or fifth. He’s still a dynamite punt returner and a unique (underutilized) weapon on offense. If we are going to open up our passing game a little this season why wouldn’t we want him in the mix? Guys like him are hard to cover when utilized the right way (the question is will he ever be in our conservative offense). Since he brings more value than just a return man I don’t see why we can’t have two excellent punt returners on our team.

I'm still not convinced it will be Walker at LT.

I am putting my money on Chambers if it’s not a draft pick.

Youboty and Florence will battle it out for the nickel spot. I think Youboty wins.

I’d rather have Chambers at LT. I want Walker nowhere near LT unless it’s as an absolute last resort.

I like Nelson as well

Nelson has upside, but could be a project of strength training his first year…..? A player I forgot to mention is Ron’s take at pick 42- william Beatty from connecticut. I think he fills in a right tackle nicely. I agree with needing a left franchise tackle. But lets face it this is a one and done year for this coaching staff. I am basing Walker off of last year as the left tackle starter without peters. I wouldn’t be surprised to see both him and butler switch sides….?

Another thing I am not a chambers fan. What I have seen of him, he has been beaten more often than not at guard and tackle.

Also did anyone consider us adding Florence in fear of Mcgee costing too much money at the end of this year? Clements and winfield are elsewhere in the NFL after 4 or 5 good years in Buffalo……..should be interesting

I like having roscoe around as well, but it really has more to do with his contract to be just a punt returner and the fact that you are correct Buffalowill the coaching staff has no idea how to use him…

Chambers...

Ron watches more O Line than anyone… and Chambers doesn’t get beat more often than not according to him.

I don’t think Florence is there to take away playing time from McGee.

Florence is there to add a veteran presence to replace the departed Greer. I don’t think it has anything to do with McGee. If they thought he would be a McGee replacement, I’d have to guess they’d have signed him for more than 2 seasons.

Just a thought....

My point about Mcgee was not for this season…if they do not resign him after the 2009 season, we are not in bad shape for 2010 with Mckelvin Florence and youboty…..

It just seems like everyone forgot how good florence was in San Diego…..

I also agree with ya Kurupt, and the fact that youboty has yet to be healthy for even half of a season….at least its safe to say CB won’t be drafted before round 6 if at all this year…

I am glad someone is high on Chambers….I need to see more this year I suppose….

A horrible season in Jacksonville will do that to you. He is a great nickel/dime corner. That’s what he will be here.

Good first post

I agree that Walker will be starting LT on day one for the Bills, whoever we draft to replace Peters will most likely protect the right side until they feel he is ready to make the switch, which won’t be til next off-season. As far as Youboty goes, that’s what everyone said about him last year when we brought in Will James (right?). It was sure that he would get the starting nickel role and Youboty would be the odd man out. Instead, Youboty played his back side off in the preseason and was practically our defensive MVP until he got hurt (he single-handedly saved/sealed the Jax game for us last year). Couldn’t agree more about Kelsay, Unger. However, if we only run the ball 15 times a game with the RBs on our roster, I’ll cancel my season tickets. I don’t care who is at WR, if we don’t run the ball WE WILL NOT WIN GAMES
