Around SBN: NFL Roundtable: Which Draft Pick Is Most Likely To Bust?

Where will Brandon Pettigrew go?

There's some talk about which teams will look to grab Brandon Pettigrew even trading up to ensure his selection.  Because of the Falcons trade for Tony Gonzalez yesterday it removes one team between the Bills and Pettigrew.  If the Bills don't take him at 11, where could he realistically be picked before the Bills come up again at 28?

Teams like the Redskins (13), Saints (14), Texans (15), Chargers (16), Bears (18), Bucs (19), Falcons (24), Dolphins (25), and Colts (27) already have an established Tight End in place and will likely not select Pettigrew.

Denver Broncos - 12th overall
They are reportedly not enamored with their TE Tony Scheffler.  Josh McDaniels would prefer a solid blocker, something that Pettigrew is.  They also may look at QB and their defense was downright awful last year.  Pettigrew here is not likely but if he is the pick, Sheffler would come onto the trading block and may be available to the Bills for a 3rd or 4th rounder.

New York Jets - 17th overall
If I am the Jets, I am looking to trade up and select my new QB.  With needs at LB and CB they should leave Dustin Keller as their starter and look to add depth later in the draft.

Detroit Lions - 20th overall
With needs all over the place at much more important positions, I doubt the Lions even look at Pettigrew.  They could trade up to 11 or down to 28 to select their LT of the future allowing us to pick Pettigrew here.

Philadelphia Eagles - 21st overall
As the writer from Bleeding Green Nation said during the SBN Mock draft, Pettigrew doesn't fit the Eagles mold at TE.  They like their TEs fast and sure-handed without regard for their blocking ability.  It makes more sense for them to grab someone from the second tier.  That being said, they could realistically select Pettigrew here.

Minnesota Vikings - 22nd overall
Not really a team that likes to use the Tight End.  They use Kleinsasser as an H-Back type of player.  They have bigger needs at WR and on defense especially, they will pass on Pettigrew.

New England Patriots - 23 overall
Would they really take Pettigrew?  They have three weapons at WR, a solid RB corps, and some nice TEs.  With bigger needs on their aging defense, it's possible but not likely.

Baltimore Ravens - 26th overall
Hope that the Ravens pull off a trade to the Cards for Anquan Boldin.  If that happens the Ravens won't have a first round pick and the Cardinals will likely look to add a WR like Demetrius Heyward-Bey or Hakeem Nicks. The Ravens could also look WR or CB here but the safety net for Joe Flacco and the blocking for McGahee, Rice, and McClain will make Pettigrew a very attractive option.

Where is it most likely?
If Pettigrew makes it past number 11, the Eagles and Ravens are the most logical spots for him to end up.  If the Ravens pull off the trade for Anquan Boldin it would ease the Pettigrew fans' minds a little.  Once the Bills pick at 11 (and add either an OT, LB, or DE) expect them to start making calls to move up and pick Pettigrew.  The Lions pick at 20th overall may work well if the Lions are targeting a second tier OT that will be there at 28.  The other option is trading down from 11 to 20 to let the Lions get one of the top OTs and Buffalo to get Pettigrew.  Either way, the latest Pettigrew lasts is pick 28 in this year's draft and he could realistically still be available at that spot.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Good write up MRW

I actually would get worried if the Cardinals trade with the Ravens and get their slot. With Larry Fitzgerald and Steve Breaston they would probably want to add to their offensive firepower with Pettigrew as opposed to another receiver, don’t you think?

I like that you put the Patriots on the list. Its not an option thats mentioned often but you never really know, he could be a fit, though not likely.

I think the Cards have Early Doucet too. He has a nice future.

The cardinals didn't use their TEs a lot last year.

But with a new OC you never know. I would imagine that if they are trying to become the Steelers West they would want to add a TE and Pettigrew might fit the bill.

Offensive Line

The Cardinals are much more likely to address their offensive line. Mike Gandy just isn’t going to get them back to the big dance.

I’m not sure Denver targets him. They need as much defensive help as they can get, and they already have Daniel Graham, who has experience at TE in McDaniels’ system.

I didn't know they had Graham...

I still think the only two likely spots are Philly and Baltimore.

I really hope we don’t trade up for this guy. Let’s take our chances that he falls to 28, or better yet, just take some other TE’s later on.

Multiple picks for a TE like this? Not my cup of tea….

What if the Lions took a lowball offer? Something like 20 for 28 and Kelsay? Okay, maybe Parrish, too…

by Ron From NM on Apr 24, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions

I wouldn't mind trading two fourths to the Lions plus 28 for 20.

To trade up from 28 to 20 according to PFT’s chart it would cost both 4th rounders… or one 4th plus Parrish or something like that. I’d be willing to do that to solidify that position for 10 years. But I like Derek Fine, too. It’s a tough call.

wow that is lowballing them

If picks aren’t involved, ok maybe. I just don’t know why the worst team in the league would take on veteran underachievers instead of adding valuable draft picks. That’s just not happening.

I wonder if part of the Peters deal was that the Eagles couldn’t take Pettigrew.

I could us trading ahead of Baltimore to get him.

Interesting...

Your comment made me wonder about the Philly trade… If the Bills really had their hearts set on Pettigrew they should have demanded #21 in the Peter’s trade instead of taking #28. I am sure they could have got that done and that would have put us ahead of most of teams that we thought might take him.

The #21 pick would put us in a much better position for him, where getting him at #28 would be a steal.

If the Bills really want Pettigrew, they’ll just take him at 11.

i know its not the right thread

but out of curiosity K, if Brian Orakpo falls to #11 (which may happen) how would you feel if the Bills drafted him?

i would have no problem w/ that... when i really started looking at all these guys he was the guy i wanted more than anyother... but...

i just assumed he wouldn’t be there so i just kind of put him out of mind.. but if he’s there i think we would have to take him… but i still have my questions about him as anyother player..

by Shovel51 on Apr 24, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I'm not a fan

but I like him more than Ayers. I don’t think Orakpo will have nearly the success in the pros he had in college because he seemed to rely strictly on his speed and strength. He needs to develop some rush moves if he wants to have the success a top 15 pick requires…

I wouldn’t mind him, I just like other players more. I doubt the Bills will like him though.

If you're a Ravens fan

and you have Heap and LJ Smith on your roster and find out your team used it’s first round pick on a TE, I imagine you would be furious.

Where else would you rather be...

by Slick Shifty on Apr 24, 2009 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

Why?

Todd Heap has really fallen off the map and LJ Smith was nothing special which is why he left Philly. They have needs at corner and WR but they could easily pick a TE there and go two TE rather than two WR sets.

I’d be happy if I were them. Todd Heap can never stay healthy and LJ Smith is a pile of garbage.
