Bills select Louisville G/C Eric Wood at No. 28

Ericwood_medium

With the No. 28 overall pick in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills have selected Louisville guard/center Eric Wood.

The Bills entered the draft with a need for an interior lineman after releasing OG Derrick Dockery prior to the start of the free agent signing period.  Wood was Buffalo's highest-rated interior lineman on their board, and he will slide in and start immediately at left guard - likely next to new left tackle Langston Walker.

Wood - 6'4" and 309 pounds - is viewed as one of the most intelligent interior linemen available this year, and it doesn't hurt that he's tough, physical and plays with a nasty demeanor.  The kid's talented, to be sure, but far more importantly, he plays the game the right way.

The Bills have one more pick today - No. 42 overall in the second round.  Keep it locked in to Buffalo Rumblings for all of your Buffalo Bills draft needs!

Damnit

Best player available. The pick should have been Everette Brown. Then – Maybin could play LB, and they’d have a true DE. Not happy with this reach.

Dude, Brown has been sliding, do you think that the Bills are the only team that doesn’t seem to like him. Nobody is picking him, it’s no the Bills ignoring a great player.

I’m a bit surprised they had Wood rated higher than Unger. Wood isn’t noted for his versatility, is he?

I think everyone is worried about his size. The NFL is a trendy league and right now the trend is BIG DE’s in a 4-3. Now Brown is a small 4-3 DE which is why he’s being passed over IMO.

Good Pick

Considering we missed on Oher and Pettigrew, I am happy with this. They probably were not happy with the Tackles avaible.

According to NFL Sirius Radio (I am sorry I can’t remember the show) they RAVED about this guy. They said he was the best C “by far” in the draft and played more mean than Mack and didn’t play on the ground. I don’t know how he will play at guard, but I am pretty sure we will see :-)

Tackle

So we are left with Langston Walker at LT and Chambers/Bell at RT. I am OK with Chambers and Bell battling it out. But Walker will get schooled this year by better pass rushers at LT, he IS NOT athletic enough.

I could see them moving Butler to LG to help out Walker (he will need all the help he can get). Butler is a former tackle and has some experience, he could help out and has some experience.

and if they get Everette Brown at 34 I"ll be ticked….I don’t want him in our division, especially on NE….

A guy who can rush the passer.

A guy who can block on the interior and looks like the adult version of the kid from badder santa.

I’d say the lines were improved which was the priority of today.

Eric Wood - Scouts, Inc. take (from Insider)

Eric Wood | OCScouts Inc.
Grade: 86

Trait Scale
1 = Exceptional 2 = Above average 3 = Average 4 = Below average 5 = Marginal

Height: 6’3⅞"
Weight: 310 lbs
 Overall Rank: 41
Position Rank: 2 (center)
 College: LOUISVILLE

Scouts Inc. Player Evaluations

Tenacity serves Wood well (Sep26)
As expected, Wood played with a mean streak and worked from the snap until the whistle against Connecticut. He got his hands into the defender’s frame immediately after snapping the ball and fought to stay in position once locked on, but he lunged and lost his balance too often. In addition, he didn’t appear to have great upper-body strength as he didn’t jar defenders with his initial punch.

Overall Football Traits
Production 2 2004: Louisville red-shirts Wood. 2005-’08: Wood starts 37 consecutive games during his four seasons of eligibility. Earns first-team All-Big East honors in 2007 and 2008; second-team All-Big East honors in 2006 and Freshman All-American honors in 2005.

Height-Weight-Speed 2 Is tall with adequate bulk and the frame to get even bigger if necessary. Ran the second-fastest times of the OC’s participating at this year’s Combine.

Durability 1 Started 49 consecutive games during his final four seasons at Louisville (2005-’08).

Character 1 Consistent, reliable player. Named team captain in 2008. No off-the-field issues to our knowledge. Is a hard worker on and off the field.

Offensive Center specific Traits
Strength/Toughness 2 Plays with a mean streak and stays in position once locked on. Shows adequate but not great lower body strength and doesn’t deliver a violent initial punch.
Agility 2 He’s a bit top-heavy with a barrel chest but surprisingly agile for that body type. Shows good range as a second-level run blocker. Displays good initial quickness but doesn’t play with the type of athleticism he showed at this year’s Combine, where he ran the second-fastest 40-time of all the participating OC’s and also finished in the top-five in the vertical jump (30.5’), short shuttle (4.51 seconds) and three-cone drill (7.56 seconds).
Awareness 2 Great playing experience. Recognition skills are improving. Will still get caught out of position on occasion but did a better job in 2008 of picking up stunts and blitzes than earlier in his career. Does an outstanding job of selling screens.
Pass Protection 2 Shows sound footwork and works hard to stay in front of defender. Shows good initial quickness but lacks ideal mirror-and-slide skills. Plays a bit high at times and gives too much ground to bull rushers when he’s not playing with good leverage.
Run Blocking 2 Fast enough to turn the corner when asked to pull and gets downfield quickly on screens but plays with a narrow base and loses balance at times. Rarely takes false steps, gets adequate hand placement and feet are active once in position. Displays adequate strength at the point of attack and shows mean streak to finish his blocks. Still, he doesn’t deliver a violent initial punch and isn’t going to drive many two-gap nose tackles off the ball.

As long as he has 10 to 12 sacks and Schobel puts up close to the same I’ll be satisfied with that approach.

Is Chris Brown drunk?

No way those two combine for 20 or so sacks next year. I hope Maybin gets 4-6, and I can’t see Schobel getting even that many…..

Solid picks starting off the 2nd round

Rey’s interviews were said at the Combine to be really concerning to many teams, seeing it now I guess
