Draft Recap Pick 42 a Shock?....2009 in a Snapshot
Well Day one has concluded and literally destroyed most of the research posted by this great staff and fellow fans such as myself.
Pick 11-Maybin, DE Penn State University. I like the Homerun type DE in this draft, but we need Every down Left Defensive end bad. This guy weighs 236 pounds and is bread at Right DE. If you think he will ever see the field on any down before 3rd you do not watch enough football (expect the Patriots games who are in shotgun 70% of the time). I am not angry at the Pick but I still Believe Ayers was the Play now DE in this draft. Enjoy Denver!
Pick 28- Wood, C Lousiville. I love this pick. I have posted before that it was time to draft a franchise type G/C and we did. He is an immediate Starter for us and should take some pressure off of the tacklle next to him this year.
Pick 42- Byrd, CB Oregon. I have to say I am schocked. This was considered the Last position that we needed in this year's draft even after WR! I will say buffalo is famous for drafting excellant special teamers and thats is the only place he will see the field this year. This is a TERRIBLE pick here. I did realize we would draft DB eventually but pick 42? Mckelvin and Mcgee are locked for starting corners in 2009. The addition of Drayton Florence replaces Greer at a cheaper price. Not to Mention a healthy Youboty could start for us as well. Reggie Corner was drafted last year for depth.....so we just cut him?
OT, TE, OLB, FS, SS, DT have yet to be addressed. I am not going to pre-jude and say the Bills will not move up at all this year, because based on the looks of this pick Roscoe is being delt to get back into the top of the Third round to salvage an OT pick that slides to the Bills.
If you have a bone in your body that says I am okay with this pick, you do not follow the Buffalo Bills Closely enough.
Our hopes for Playoff Contention may have went out the window without drafting at least competiton for a starting position this year ie OLB, OT, TE...not the third best Punt returner on the team/ prevent DB.....as if we are ever that far ahead in games?????
Day one gets a grade of C maximum.....major risks here people! Let me know your thoughts
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Yep, totally agree
I was so ticked off at the selection, i walked straight outside, seen my neighbor outside also and went over there. I knew he was not a football fan, so we talked nascar instead. If i would have talked football at that moment in time, i’d prolly have to take another blood pressure pill afterwards.
Are we drafting Dino's now?

I can go with a C. I like the Maybin and Wood picks.
The top picks should carry more weight.

They do carry more weight
Just not enough to outweigh screwing up rounds 2 and 3 by taking a CB.

I think the Levitre trade up may hurt more than the Byrd pick and the combo of the two is brutal!!!!!

Yea, i’m still pissed about the CB pick. They passed on Robinson at 42 so they could blow 2 draft picks to get a corner………….. Now i know someone going to say OG, but they had the best og at 42 and picked a corner, that is why i say they basically blew 2 draft picks on corner. This could be the alcohol talking also………lol

The best OG is still on the board going into rd3
Which tells me that he might not be the best OG…

Robinson went at the end of the 5th round...
Still think we should have taken him at 42?

Yeah, or he put it up before the Bills moved up to get Levitre. But you’re right – I just forbid people being pissed off here.

Byrd as a safety
Chris Brown’s update indicated Byrd could play free safety.
He’s about the same size as Whitner.
It’s funny. If Mabin were play SLB, Byrd SS, and Levitre RT – I’d really like this draft.
If Maybin plays RDE, Byrd CB and Levitre – OG – I won’t like this draft as much.
I give the Bills a D+ right now
The Byrd pick and the loot given up to take Levitre (who should HAVE been the pick at 42) sinks this draft for me horribly.
Maybin is a boom or bust guy, and I admire the cajones it took to make it at 11, he could have been had later though….
Wood- Solid solid solid pick no problems with that one here
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
agreed......I like Maybin and think he will be very good in 2010, which is why I gave the draft a C

I knew it
I knew it, and many of you did as well, that at some point in this draft the Bills would make a selection that would send us overt the edge. The Byrd pick did just that. What is it with this team and cornerbacks? I understand the pick only if we don’t have so many other needs.
And I agree with WABillsfan that Levitre should have been the pick at 42, or at least someone who has a chance to start for us, and then we don’t have to deal away two picks for him!!!
I’m wondering if OBD thinks Levitre can play OT in the NFL?
I've been feeling Buffalo ill.
I doubt OBD sees Levitre playing tackle
I think the Bills are going to go with Walker, Chambers and Bell with one of them (Chambers?) backing up the other two. Levitre will back up Wood and Butler.

Does it change your mind that they want Byrn to play safety?

Remember when i said 10-6 record this season coming up..........
I"m changing that one. After the Peters trade, and the selection of Byrd at 42, they go 5-11 or 6-10 and everyone gets canned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Two decisions make that record?
I’m sorry. No it doesn’t. The only thing that makes that record is no growth from Trent Edwards.

It’s just not that Brian…………. I know your not going to agree with there selections after Maybin. This draft turned south, badly. Oh, by the way, good call on Maybin pick and that OBD was considering him if he was there.

I know your not going to agree with there selections after Maybin.
… but I did. Two of them, anyways; the third (Byrd) is at the very least intriguing.

Intriguing doesn't have to be a good thing!

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Let's keep in mind that 5 DBs went after our #42
5 out of 22 picks, that’s almost 25%
If OBD wanted a DB, felt they needed to add a Punt/Kick Return guy – it probably made sense.
39 games, 204 tackles and 17 INTs – is pretty dam good! that’s an INT every second game he played and over 5 tackles per game.
In comparison:
Darius Butler had (45 games) 180 tackles & 7 INTs (Taken at #41 by the Patriots)
Alphonso Smith (51 games) who the Denver Broncos gave up a 2010 first rounder for went at #37 and he had 188 tackles and 21 INTs, which works out to .4 INTs per game and 3.6 tackles per game.
Byrd sound like a playmaker and even though I did not see it coming, I am not as pessimistic about it as you guys. I am OK with this pick. Especially if we can get pressure on the QB, I love the idea of actually having someone in the secondary that can actually make a play for the ball, unlike a certain 2006 first round pick we have (2 INTs after 3 full seasons is completely pathetic)

I'm ok with the player
still not sold on the pick though. I won’t be for some time, at least until we see whether the other holes are filled capably.

This will go down as the worst draft in recent memory.
so much for “WIN NOW”.
OK I have to admit that my first grade was a knee jerk reaction.
Looking at this draft overall and where they’ll use Byrd and Harris, I have to give it a B overall.
Excellent draft for the Bills.
