Bills trade back into second round, select OG Andy Levitre

New Buffalo Bills OG Andy Levitre (photo source)
The Buffalo Bills, in their most shocking move of the day, have traded back into the second round to select Oregon State OG Andy Levitre.
The Bills sent their third-round pick (No. 75 overall) and their first fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall) to the Dallas Cowboys for the No. 51 overall selection, which they used to add the versatile Levitre.
Levitre is the second interior lineman selected by the Bills on the day, joining Louisville C/G Eric Wood, the team's No. 28 overall pick in the first round. Though he played left tackle at Oregon State, NFL scouts don't believe he can play the position in the pros, lacking the arm length and overall frame (6'3", 305 pounds) to adequately protect the edge.
Oddly enough, the Bills emerge from the first day of the draft with the top two interior linemen on their board in Levitre and the aforementioned Wood. Feel free to speculate on how Levitre fits into the picture - does Brad Butler move to RT? Is Levitre simply a backup? The comments section is yours. We're pretty sure Buffalo is done for the day.

Wow...

Tom Modrak should be fired for that move alone. Levitre is good (though not the best interior o-lineman still on the board), but the Bills need a TE and OLB. Now they don’t have any picks to get one. In general, this has been a poor draft, but at least we didn’t pick an OT (the last thing we needed).
I think he was the best interior OL on the board.
And they can still get a depth TE. They are high on Derek Fine and various TEs will be available in the 4th and 5th.

It looks like they’re playing for Gresham in 2010. I’m nearly done with this team. You need picks to fill holes. You don’t need to lose 1 to move up and grab an early interior guy.

At this point I hate to give the Bills credit for anything, but you are all missing the point. The team got ver lucky in the 7th round last year and landed an OT named Demetrius Bell who was still raw, but who the coaches believe is going to be a stud. Look at Chris Brown’s live blog yesterday when he said clearly (I believe these are close to the exact words): “The coaching staff has a very high level of confidence in Demetrius Bell.” That’s why they weren’t willing to meet Jason Peters’ contract demands — because they thought they had a prospect who would be as good as Peters within a year or two. If they have someone they feel is THAT GOOD they are going to do everything to get him on the field next year. As the Bills have said repeatedly in the last few weeks (Russ Brandon said it explicitly last week), Bell is going to be the starting RT in 2009. That’s the plain and simple reality.
If thats the case, Where do the put Levitre and Wood?
by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 25, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions
My guess would be that Hangartner, Butler, Wood and Levitre will compete for the three starting interior o-line position. I suspect the first three will win out to be starters and Levitre will be the reserve interior o-lineman. Given how often that reserve guy plays, it’s a very important position (see Geoff Hangartner, Carolina Panthers, 2008). We also have Seth McKinney for that reserve role, but he is only on a one-year contract so the Bills probably don’t have him in their long-term plans.
Where did he explicitly say it last week?

Hangartner has got to be playing, if we are paying him right? Even so I think FO understands how important building a solid offensive line is to making your team a contender. Hopefully we can get someone like Ingram Beckum or Nelson or Cook in the 4th round round.
The supposed need was OLB but Ellison was one of the more consistent LBs all year.
Trying to stay optimistic, but I think we overall had a good first day….

I am a firm believer in building from the trenches out so getting 2 of the top interior lineman and a pass rush specialist makes me feel a little better…if they move whitner back to strong safety and play byrd as a “playmaking” free safety then I have offically moved back from the ledge
What ledge. Don’t you live on the bottom floor!!
But I agree building the interior of the line is where its at. Add some speed to DE and you got a better team after today is over.
Well when I follow my girlfriend around she ends up in your room. So I know you live on the bottom floor.

remember
what is expected of our cb’s in this defense. they have shallow and intermediate third so flat out speed is not as important. bottom line is that Byrd is a playmaker. led the pac 10 in int’s the last 2 years. it may have been unexpected but I don’t think he’ll be a bust.
Byrd might not even make the team, just a hunch.

I am OK with our interior OLine moves
Dline, Maybin is good, preferred Brown, but can live with it
Byrd is just ?? for me
I really really hope he was taken so we can move Ko out from FS and move Donter back to SS
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
YEAH!!
I called this in my mock draft!
Levitre is the best pure guard in the draft!
Now that gives us flexibility, however, I am afraid we don’t have enough people on the roster that can play left tackle. Currenlty we have ZERO left tackles on the roster!
I REALLY question the Byrd pick, it makes no sense now. We could have had a linebacker, we could have taken the bes tackle etc.
Someone give me credit though on calling Levitre!

Our oline is solid now at least
But I must admit I am really really really afraid with Walker out at LT, we will need to keep Fine in, ALOT to help him handle speed rushers coming in from that side.
Which means if we want a TE who can catch the ball, we need one later today, but with the need for OLB so horribly bad right now, our other 4th will be used to make that hole go away, which means not till the 5th for a TE. I guess Stupar can go out partying now, his roster spot is safer than the gold in Fort Knox
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
Always trade next year's third for this year's fourth.

With the number of LBers falling, that 3rd round pick COULD have been McKenzie
So what would you be willing to cough up to get a 3rd to get him back Brian? The 110 pick in the 4th is useful for drafting as well since you can usually catch a sliding third rounder, 121, not so much.
Unless the Bills have some crazy trades in the works involving several of the players we were discussing, I cannot condone coughing up more picks when we need depth still at TE (unless you think Stupar and Schouman can be #2 TEs). Fine is fine so to speak for me, I like him as my starter, but we need another mauler, especially if we will be playing Walker at LT.
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
So we gave up
- SS Vaughn and #110 OLB McKenzie to get Levitre…..crap! But we got Byrd at #42, so we won’t miss Vaughn at all……derp!!!!

Trade Roscoe
Mark my words. We WILL be unloading Roscoe this weekend, possibly before the night is over. Byrd can return punts and Johnson is a good slot receiver.
I’m closing comments on this one, folks. We’ve got a day one recap up on the front page. Thanks for stopping by today!
