Bills trade back into second round, select OG Andy Levitre

New Buffalo Bills OG Andy Levitre (photo source)
The Buffalo Bills, in their most shocking move of the day, have traded back into the second round to select Oregon State OG Andy Levitre.
The Bills sent their third-round pick (No. 75 overall) and their first fourth-round pick (No. 110 overall) to the Dallas Cowboys for the No. 51 overall selection, which they used to add the versatile Levitre.
Levitre is the second interior lineman selected by the Bills on the day, joining Louisville C/G Eric Wood, the team's No. 28 overall pick in the first round. Though he played left tackle at Oregon State, NFL scouts don't believe he can play the position in the pros, lacking the arm length and overall frame (6'3", 305 pounds) to adequately protect the edge.
Oddly enough, the Bills emerge from the first day of the draft with the top two interior linemen on their board in Levitre and the aforementioned Wood. Feel free to speculate on how Levitre fits into the picture - does Brad Butler move to RT? Is Levitre simply a backup? The comments section is yours. We're pretty sure Buffalo is done for the day.

Tom Modrak should be fired for that move alone. Levitre is good (though not the best interior o-lineman still on the board), but the Bills need a TE and OLB. Now they don’t have any picks to get one. In general, this has been a poor draft, but at least we didn’t pick an OT (the last thing we needed).

I think he was the best interior OL on the board.
And they can still get a depth TE. They are high on Derek Fine and various TEs will be available in the 4th and 5th.

It looks like they’re playing for Gresham in 2010. I’m nearly done with this team. You need picks to fill holes. You don’t need to lose 1 to move up and grab an early interior guy.

Agreed.
I am now stepping back from the ledge after the last pick. Excellent move. Now that line should be solid with two young studs at the guard positions and hanger at center. Levitre and Wood play very mean on the field and Butler as well. That exactly what we need.

Maybin may take some time, which I am thinking Jauron thinks he has no matter what, Wood is a solid pick. Byrd is a joke. After realizing they screwed that up, they panic, trade up, and pick Levitre for some unknown reason???

At this point I hate to give the Bills credit for anything, but you are all missing the point. The team got ver lucky in the 7th round last year and landed an OT named Demetrius Bell who was still raw, but who the coaches believe is going to be a stud. Look at Chris Brown’s live blog yesterday when he said clearly (I believe these are close to the exact words): “The coaching staff has a very high level of confidence in Demetrius Bell.” That’s why they weren’t willing to meet Jason Peters’ contract demands — because they thought they had a prospect who would be as good as Peters within a year or two. If they have someone they feel is THAT GOOD they are going to do everything to get him on the field next year. As the Bills have said repeatedly in the last few weeks (Russ Brandon said it explicitly last week), Bell is going to be the starting RT in 2009. That’s the plain and simple reality.

If thats the case, Where do the put Levitre and Wood?
by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 25, 2009 9:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
My guess would be that Hangartner, Butler, Wood and Levitre will compete for the three starting interior o-line position. I suspect the first three will win out to be starters and Levitre will be the reserve interior o-lineman. Given how often that reserve guy plays, it’s a very important position (see Geoff Hangartner, Carolina Panthers, 2008). We also have Seth McKinney for that reserve role, but he is only on a one-year contract so the Bills probably don’t have him in their long-term plans.

THis is a good trade. You have know established an interior line. Let Chambers and Bell fight it out for Tackle. I would have been thrilled if they did this for their round 2 pick then moved back up and took a safety. 4 interior guys fight for 3 spots creates great competition and a solid backup.

YEAH!!
I called this in my mock draft!
Levitre is the best pure guard in the draft!
Now that gives us flexibility, however, I am afraid we don’t have enough people on the roster that can play left tackle. Currenlty we have ZERO left tackles on the roster!
I REALLY question the Byrd pick, it makes no sense now. We could have had a linebacker, we could have taken the bes tackle etc.
Someone give me credit though on calling Levitre!

My Draft quote.
Round #2, pick 42
Andrew Levitre – Guard – Oregon State
NOTE: the Bills will NOT draft Alex Mack. He is much better suited to play Center and the best offseason signing was Hangartner. Hangartner will man Center this year, period. Leviter is slightly undersized but plays big and mean. Based on what Geronimo said, he fits the profile the Bills are looking for.

I called for a pass rusher and talked up Wood, though I pretty much hate 42 right now!

Well, if you hate the fact they took a defensive back in a totally unreasonable slot, trust in the saving grace that he will make plays. He can possibly man free safety this year and then maybe move back to cornerback and dominate with McKelvin for years to come.
Don’t think so negatively before the guy has time to prove or disprove himself and his worth.

Can he make plays from the sidelines???
Unless he’s going to crack the CB rotation or become the starting FS, I don’t think he’ll be very useful anytime soon.
I don’t think Byrd is a bad player, it was just a bad pick for the Bills.

I’m with you on this. Byrd could very well turn into a real player for the Bills. I would have preferred to draft Levitre there and save the 3rd rounder.

We needed that 3rd to get a good OLB, we are now stuck with the leftovers in the 4th
Goodbye immediate OLB starter, :-(
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

Ellison is a solid backup, but he should not be a 16 game start sireric

HAHA
You are a pissed off dude right now. I’m not disagreeing with you, I am saying that if Ellison is so bad then we shouldn’t have a problem replacing him, even with a 4th round pick.

I thought you were saying we should be happy with Ellison starting 16 games, sorry.

How can you call him the best pure guard when he didn’t even play that position?

I think the spirit of his comment was “highest-rated guard”.

Maybe we can send off Parrish and a 7th and get a 3rd back tomorrow. Get someone like James Casey and then go after a linebacker like Tyrone McKenzie in the 4th.
Oh, and no credit for you, Jason. :)

I don't really deserve any
Oher, Pettigrew, and my prediction that they wouldn’t take a DE/OLB with teh #11 pick were WAY off!

If we can get back into the 3rd
and get one of the TE’s, then a LB in the 4th, I will be very happy with this draft. I didn’t realize Byrd was going to be FS, but I think he’ll be a great fit there. I am not sure who is going to play where on the off line, but I love Wood and Levitre.

What if
The bills put Levitre at RT or LT. That is where he played in college. Does anyone think he could handle tackle duties on the pro level.

On BB.com
I think it is real funny that Chris Brown talks about all the picks other than Byrd. It is like OBD confused themselves with that pick! Basically, they have nothing on their website about him other than he may play safety and had a bunch of picks.

Our oline is solid now at least
But I must admit I am really really really afraid with Walker out at LT, we will need to keep Fine in, ALOT to help him handle speed rushers coming in from that side.
Which means if we want a TE who can catch the ball, we need one later today, but with the need for OLB so horribly bad right now, our other 4th will be used to make that hole go away, which means not till the 5th for a TE. I guess Stupar can go out partying now, his roster spot is safer than the gold in Fort Knox

How many more Centers do we need?
Hangartner, Wood and McKinney can all play the position, and will.

Wood is the starting Guard, I would prefer to leave him there then move him around. Hang is the starter so you need a back-up. McKinney I view more as a back-up guard.

He’s still a backup interior linemen….
OG/C: Hangartner, Wood, Levitre, McKinney
OT: Chambers, Walker, Bell
OT/OG: Butler
I don’t think we need another guy….

Which was my point
We will either have to cough up our 4th a a player(s) to get back into the 3rd to get a guy who might fit our scheme, or just pray people fall to us. I am really mad we gave up th 110th pick instead of the 121st, we got rooked on this trade.
