Bills select Southern Miss TE Shawn Nelson at No. 121

Shawnnelson_medium
New Buffalo Bills TE Shawn Nelson (photo source)

With pick number 121 in the 2009 NFL Draft, the Buffalo Bills have selected Shawn Nelson, a versatile, athletic TE from Southern Miss.

The No. 121 overall pick is one of the selections obtained by the Bills in the Jason Peters trade. The first was used on OG Eric Wood yesterday in the first round.

Nelson was a favorite of many folks here and should go a long way towards appeasing the masses, as well as being a pretty good TE. Nelson has good blocking skills and is considered a pretty solid receiver at the position.  The 6'5", 240-pound Nelson runs the 40-yard dash in 4.56 seconds, scored 16 career touchdowns and averaged 13.1 yards per reception in his career as Southern Miss' go-to target.  Once considered a darkhorse contender for first-round consideration, Nelson represents tremendous value in the fourth round.

Buffalo has three more selections on the day.  This is your open thread until the Bills' next pick, No. 147 overall in the fifth round.  Stay tuned!

Great pick by the Bills

In terms of value and need. Nelson was probably the best player available, and we needed a TE as well. Great pick. now we just need to get a LB in the 5th

I like the Byrd pick.

I think he will be a nasty little ball hawking safety. I think the FO thought our LB situation and LT situation is in less of a shamble than safety. Lets be honest, our safety play was awful at best last year. Hey if you have a guy standing out like that with all the names around him crossed off, you have to go with it.

I still think Donte could step his game up to that Bob Sanders place he needs to be at. At any rate we have enough DBs now that competition should be pretty excellent. I’m sure Byrd will take a bit to develop. Whitner needs to take that next step. Thanks for being the most beautiful, I mean brilliant, Bills fan on the board. :-)

Did I just hear Chris Carter say that John Locke is the strength and conditioning coach at Arizona! I though he was still on the island?

The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.

He'll be a LB

4 sure at that size, 6-2, 233, he’ll convert to LB. Freeman must not be worth it. I’m fine with it.

Harris is a great player

only fault was that he is too slow for Safety and everyone wants him to play LB, but he doesn’t like the idea.

At this rate

Freeman might still be available at 183. Not.

Who do we go for at 183? Best available, maybe a small school sleeper. A QB?
