Bills select West Virginia CB Ellis Lankster at No. 220
New Buffalo Bills CB Ellis Lankster (photo source)
With their final pick in the 2009 NFL Draft - No. 220 overall - the Buffalo Bills have selected West Virginia CB Ellis Lankster.
As we mentioned when the Bills selected USC CB Cary Harris in the sixth round, the Bills have several players approaching free agent status in their defensive secondary. Of their eight picks this year, three have been defensive backs, and the underrated Lankster is the latest to join the fray.
Lankster, a 5'10", 190-pound specimen, is another CB prospect that is considered a "best fit" for a zone scheme. He is instinctive and plays well coming forward, but lacks the fluid hips and straight-line speed to match up with receivers in man coverage. He has solid ball skills, but as a seventh round prospect at a position loaded with depth, Lankster is going to have a rough go of it trying to carve a spot out for himself on this roster.
That concludes the Bills' action for the 2009 NFL Draft. Thanks for choosing Buffalo Rumblings for your Bills draft needs this year!

I was still laughing about this pick
The time has come for someone to put his foot down. And that foot is me.
I thought you were laughing about the unanimousness of the poll.

Rough go of it? He won’t make it. Period. Ever.
This is ridiculous
There is no way he makes the roster. Why not draft another position for a player whom at least provides competition for other positions?
This pick is unexcusable.

Lankster won't make the team.
That leaves 6 cornerbacks, and you can assume Harris will be a special team guy. It really isn’t that bad.

4 DBs?
Oh, yeah, 1 of them will magically become a LB. Of the DBs on the roster, which are the 3 that go? If Buffalo doesn’t drop 3 DBs before the end of camp then some of these DB picks aren’t going to make it. It doesn’t matter that most of Buffalo’s DBs will be free agents next year or the year after given that only 1 of the guys selected will make the final roster—and that one due at least partly to his far too lofty draft status. I just don’t see the logic in using guys you know you’re destined to cut.
Byrd will be a Safety
and was a 2nd round prospect, so don’t include him with these CB’s!

Taking a CB in the 6th isn’t a big deal, but doing it again in the 7th for someone that doesn’t even seem that impressive (same thing goes if he’s a S).

You can’t tell me that getting a cornerback was logical here. Depth has been addressed. I’m fine with the Cary Harris pick, but use this on someone you think has potential, and someone who DOES NOT play cornerback. It’s just overkill. He probably won’t even make the team, especially because of the depth, so go after someone who would have had a chance.
Again, “taking a [insert position]” is what isn’t logical. It was BPA. They would have taken a punter here if he graded out higher than Lankster.
Buffalo Rumblings - all you care to know about the Buffalo Bills and more

And I would have been fine with that. BPA is well and good, but there is a point where positional need, or lack thereof, has to affect the pick. Even more so if that player has next to no chance to make it out of camp.
I just don’t, and won’t, agree with you on that. :)

Very much agree. Especially a team that hasn’t made the playoffs in 9 years. The Bills don’t exactly have the luxury of throwing away 6th and 7th round draft choices…
by StroudFanClub on Apr 26, 2009 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions
You’re misinterpreting me.
A) They’re not throwing this pick away. They picked the best player on their board. Did you honestly expect them to do something different?
B) When I say “it’s the seventh round”, I’m coming from the angle that somehow these picks ruin what has been an incredibly productive draft for the Bills. They do not. The Bills have had an excellent draft.
C) I mentioned above that I’m not skipping around my basement pantless because we drafted two corners to close the draft. But it is what it is – BPA. I honestly don’t know how you guys expected anything different.

a 7th CB
That’s the problem. I understand BPA and agree with it, but when you’re picking players that are just redundant and seemingly have no chance to make the team, why waste the pick?
I didn’t say the 7th ruined the draft, and I hope no one feels that way!!! I thought you were saying, oh well, it’s a 7th..who cares….

Because a lot of that was competition. There won’t be the same competiton this year. The cornerback position is pretty well set in stone coming in to this year.
really?
Who’s to say that….how do you know that CB Harris cant come in right away and take the spot from Corner…I mean Corner went to Akron……and Harris went to USC…..the only advantage Corner has right now is having played in the system…..and once Harris gets familiar with the playbook and scheme there is no telling who would win.

yea I don’t know where you are getting this idea that we think the draft is ruined because of the two corners.
But it doesn’t change the fact that they were not good picks. If they are picking entirely BPA in the late rounds then maybe they need to rethink their strategy. You have to consider need at least enough to not make illogical picks
Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. - Pete Prisco
Brandon Rodd!! Our best player.
RE: Best Player Available. At some point, common sense tells you that you don’t need any more CBs and even though BPA is a CB, you can overrule the list you made. It’s not like a Fantasy draft where you’ve pre-ranked your players and leave and you can duplicate positions. The Bills do realize that they are not “locked into” the list they made pre-draft, right?

The big thing to me about these last two picks is this:
It is the difference between BPA and BPA who will make your team.
I can’t get too crazy about a 6th and 7th round pick, but with that said, it would make more sense to me to grab a guy who has a better chance to make the roster there by improving the roster. Again I’m not going to go nuts, but I don’t like either of these last two picks.

that tells you how big the gap was between the top 3.........and everyone else......
next year will be a good QB class.

Oh, yeah. Next year should be good. And there should be a bunch of undrafted free agent QBs. Of course, it might be better if they try going to Canada or indoor leagues for a bit more experience, though… too bad there’s no minor league for football.
Still available: Chase Daniel, Chase Holbrook, Graham Harrell, Drew Willy, Brian Hoyer, Mike Reilly, Cullen Harper…
I cannot remember a draft in which so many TE's were drafted.

He had almost as many TDs than the three quarterbacks picked in the first round… combined. (134-136)
yeah production is fantastic........
but like most things……people (teams) are obsessed with measurables……instead of production.

every QB plays in a system……..
Godspeed Nick - RIP - 1986-2009

but He's never played in another system
so how do you know that?
Godspeed Nick - RIP - 1986-2009
by norcaliangelsfan on Apr 26, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t. But you’d think quarterbacks would strive in a quarterback-central system. Somebody from a similar system came out a year or two ago and did not pan out.
well none of the Texas Tech QB's have ever panned out in the NFL (atleast recently)
but I dont know of too many that were given legitimate shots either…….
