Larry Foote anyone?

Larry Foote was just released from the Steelers.  He is 28 years old but was playing ILB in the Steelers 3-4 defense.  He did not have a overly productive 2008, but would probably only request 3.5 to 5 million a year.  Do you think he would be worth bringing in.  He has two Super Bowl rings and would bring some additional experience to what is a somewhat young roster.

I would take him just because he is an immediate upgrade over Ellison. Living in Pittsburgh, I’ve watched him his entire career. Though he has dropped production wise recently, he is still a capable and durable veteran.

Is he the right fit?

Should we be interested? I prefer Hill and I prefer Crowell but in the absence of both of those guys, would we be smart to bring him in for a look?

Let’s look at the pros & Cons:

He has played in a 3-4 his whole career – CON
He is relatively smallish for a SAM LB – CON
He is decent but not great in all aspects (Against the run or dropping into coverage) – AVE
He leaves everything on the field – PRO
He is a veteran, from an aggressive Defense with something to prove – PRO
He’s a two-time SuperBowl Champion and knows what it takes to win – PRO
Might come cheap, for a 1-2 year deal – PRO

His he worth taking a look at? I think so.

Agreed

I would at least take a look. I am sure Russ and OBD will at least have internal talks to discuss all the points you brought up (scheme, price, productivity, etc.), before bringing him in. Would Larry be willing to move outside or would they move Poz outside? Somehow I don’t think moving Poz outside for someone that would only be here for two years is an option.

Unfortunately Crowell is with the Bucs and it’s a pretty good bet that Hill will resign with the Seahawks.

Not a fit

How does one project a WILB from a 3-4 moving to SAM in a Tampa 2?

Different skill set. He stays in a 3-4 or goes to Lions and plays MLB in a conventional 4-3.

PASS!

I don’t think it’s hard to project a player into a new position at all. You just look at his strengths and weaknesses vs. the most and least important qualities needed at the new position. I don’t really know enough about Foote say whether or not he would fit, but I’m sure that OBD could pop in some game film and make a very accurate assesment as to how he would fit into the SAM spot in this defense.

Since when is a 240 pound LB smallish? I would say that is pretty ideal size.

by kaisertown on Apr 28, 2009 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Porter

Maybe he would look at how Porter reestablished himself with MIami and use that as motivation in 2009. Also, good players play on good teams. The Steelers have been a good team, so I think he’d be an upgrade over Ellison playing on a poor/underachieving squad his whole career.

by Moneyballer23 on Apr 28, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah onced they moved to mainly a 34.. he didn't do anything the first year there playing primarily in the 34 now of course they are two comlpletely different lb's

porter has made his livng on rushing the passer, which is easier to as an OLB in a 34, and he wasn’t able to use that as much playin the 34..

i think foote would translate more as MLB in a 43, but i guess he could probably play the same too… i don’t see the bills taking a look at him

by Shovel51 on Apr 29, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I'd consider him if Hill is not an option

To me Hill would be the better sign. He’s younger, faster, bigger, stronger, and has played his whole career as a 4-3 SAM. But I do think that Foot could make a easy transition to the SAM and he would be a very nice consolation prize.

by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 28, 2009 2:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hill would cost about 2 to 3 million more...

but Hill has some off-field issues and have never won a thing. He might be better athletically, but Foote would bring more intangibles.

by hilliarddavid on Apr 28, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know that Hill would cost more, but he might very well be worth it.

by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 28, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Off-feild issues? really? it was pot, get off it. ‘ve defended Lynch to the bitter end for pot, and I’ll defend Hill. To me, pot is not a character issue at all. Sure he might get suspended, that is a possibility. But all indications are that he wont do it again, so I’m cool with it.

As for him not winning anything, he has been to a SB, which is more than we can say about our entire team (minus Mitchell). So yeah Foot may have won two SBs, but if he’s on a downward slope, then I’d much rather have Hill.

But like I said, Foot would be a good consolation prize.

To me, pot is not a character issue at all.

That’s a matter of opinion that we won’t get into here on the blog, but it’s completely within your rights to hold it. However, it is still breaking the law – and breaking the law is most definitely an “off-field issue.”

Ok your right, it is an opinion, and when it comes to the NFL rulings, my opinion don’t count for $hit. So I’ll put it in a different manner.

In the past when players have tested positive for pot, the vast majority are not repeat offenders (Ricky Williams is the exception). Warren Sapp tested positive for pot early in his career, but never did again. My point is that Hill is unlikely to be a repeat offender, which is why his past offence does not bother me.

Well the laws on pot up here are more slack then in the states, but it’s still mostly illigal. However I could probably get a prescription for it more easily then if I was in California. And here’s the kicker, if I have a prescription for it, I don’t have to go to a grow op to buy it, the government grows it and gives it to me for free. God bless social healthcare. :-P

God bless social healthcare

question: is it tougher to get medical appointments and surgeries scheduled because of social healthcare?

The rest of you go get the goods on Stan. His mom grounded him once for setting something on fire. Let's find out what that something was and then lie and say it was a puppy.

by J2 on Apr 30, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tougher? absolutly not, everyone gets what they need. Is athe waiting list longer then in private healthcare? Yes. Simply because everyone gets what they need. Non ecential surgery, as in anything that your life does no depend upon, like a hip replacement, or a catarac surgery, the waiting list in generally between 2 to 6 months. But anything that is essential to your living is done immidietly. As for a doctor’s appointment, in Ontario if you have a family doctor then you can usually get an appointment within a week’s time. We also have a series of walk in clinics where you’ll get service the same day. Lines in the ER at hospitals are longer as well for no life threathening injuries. If you walk in with a broken leg, they’ll numb the injured area until they can attend to you. Once again, if the injury is life threatening, you get immidiate care. It was also fun to know that my wife and I had a private room in the hospital when we had our son and that I could stay with here there for the 3 days after he was born.

Medication is much cheaper then in the US, but you still have to pay for it. That being said, medical insurance for things that the government does not cover, such as casual prescriptions (anti-biotics, cold mdication, even heart medication), is much easier to obtian, and in 90% of the cases, said insurence covers all the cost of your medication. And as with surgeries, any life essential medication, such as medications for cancer treatments, are fully covered by social healthcare.

The waiting lists might be longer, it might be a bit harder to find a family doctor and lines in hospital might be a bit longer, the taxes higher because the state covers all things medical, but in the long run it’s worth it. It’s good to know that if I’m diagnosed with cancer tomorrow, my family wont got bankrupt because they have to cover the treatments, or that I wont be refused treatment because I can’t afford to pay the hospital. I’d much rather give away 15% more of my anual income for a well funded and well run social healthcare and never have to use it then to keep it all to myself and go broke when I do have to use it.

Foote is only 28?

Jeez, I thought this guy was playing in the late 90’s….

I don’t think he’s a fit for our D, so I’m not sure there’d be a whole lot of interest….

He also went to Michigan and won a Super Bowl at Ford Field so that doesn’t suprise me.

Go get him!

He knows how to win and he likes to win. I would be happy with him or hill

as to moving him from mlb im ok with it, i dont feel it is that far of a reach, he has the athletic ability, and we could even move poz to the outside like they talked about in the beginning of the off-season.

What about James Farrior

I realize he is 34 and not nearly the player he was a few years back, but with his advanced age he would come cheap and might be OK with a 1 year deal. I like him for our SAM as he is a LB who has always been good at the point of attack and can fight through blockers. Obviously not the answer, but I think he’d be a better stop gap than Foote.

Hill earned the starting job for the 2009 season by beating out Alex Smith, who missed last season after re-injuring his surgically repaired throwing shoulder.
