Matthews and Cushing juicing?

Ed. Note, by Brian Galliford: Thanks to Fam_1st for posting this, apparently in the wee hours of the morning.  It should be noted that this is NOT confirmed - but if true, it's a big hit on a prospect that the Buffalo Bills like (Matthews).

I don't know at all if this is true but I thought it would be interesting to find out more because I don't want to make the mistake and waste a first or second round draft pick on the next Tony Mandarich or Brian Bosworth and have guys who could play in college because they were cheating to improve their physical abilities and then come into the NFL and get themselves torn up.

NFL | Cushing, Matthews tested positive for steroids
Thu, 02 Apr 2009 20:23:40 -0700

Rick Serritella, of NFLDraftBible.com, reports Southern California LB Brian Cushing and LB Clay Matthews tested positive for steroids at the NFL Scouting Combine, according to various sources, including one NFL team.

I have no idea how credible this DraftBible website is but hopefully we’ll find out the truth of this before draft day!

Also I got this from a Thread at the Bills Message Board and it was being discussed and speculated on over there but im hoping this is just nonsense.

Im not the brightest on a computer but I went to the sight and it’s there on the right side of the page on their website and is as of now the top article but there’s not much to it at all.

There's a reason these guys don't become doctors or lawyers.

If True

If these two linebackers did test positive then Buffalo who was possible looking at Cushing if Brown or Okapo are not available, should trade down to get more picks. We have enough distractions in Buffalo (TO) than to bring in Cushing and deal with the questions of did he or didn’t he do steroids. I hope this is a false report.

The thing is

There’s no way a trade down is a guarantee for the Bills. Who’s to say that other, more successful teams want to trade up for juice guys? If true, then the news on Raji (whom I think the Bills should gamble on if available), Cushing, and Matthews could greatly impact the draft boards of many teams.

I am no doctor...

…but I picked up weight lifting about 3 years ago. It took me a little over one year to put on 60lbs of pretty solid size. I went from 170lbs – 230lbs by working out 5 days per week and eating 4,000 calories.

I didn’t even use creatine. Putting on muscle is ten times easier than “average folk” think.

Agreed

Which is why I don’t think that Maybin juiced. I’d really like a confirmation on Cushing and Mathews though.

I’d like to think that this is bigger than what individuals “want”; it’s important on the level that if true, it might be one less option for the Bills. And options are gold on draft day.

Its too bad

Because that could follow them around for a while. Its funny, because I was just listening to Pete Carroll talk his boys up on NFL radio and how they improved their 40 times and that. I wonder if someone like carroll just looks the other way, encourages this sort of thing, or they will just be doing roids thorughout their careers trying to dodge the “authorities”
To me, this would be more devastating than someone like Raji puffing reefer because, when they stop they will just get weaker and slower, while little happens to Raji except Family Guy is no longer funny

On Cushing at the Combine...

An NFL general manager, requesting anonymity, said: “We’ve been warned it is an issue and might have been one since high school. We are considering that. As unpleasant as it is, this is an issue with this player that only a negative test here is going to clear up right now. It’s unfortunate, because no one wants to kill the kid, but the issue is a reality.”
And a 30-year NFL scout added: "If I were to look at the entire 300-plus group of players here and ask myself based on my knowledge of steroids which one of these players is the prime prospect to have used it, he would be it. He has the physique and other attributes that indicate it.

"I'm going to talk to Mike and see what he has to say and see what he thinks he needs. But there are going to be some changes. What's that old song? 'There are going to be some changes made'? Frankly I forget the words beyond 'there are going to be some changes made.'" -Ralph Wilson, Jr.

I liked Matthews.....

But with this kind of question mark, NO WAY. I would rather draft a reef smoker before a guy that does performance enhancing drugs.

How many years can we go without making the playoffs...eventually the odds go in your favor.........right?!?!?

by Rudy916 on Apr 3, 2009 9:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There's a month to get the question mark resolved.

Either the guys tested positive for steroids/dope at the Combine or they didn’t. I have to believe that the NFL shares all of that information with every team. So, as it relates to Matthews specifically, Buffalo knows for certain if he tested positive for banned substances or not.

If he didn’t test positive then Buffalo knows he’s clean (or at least smart enough to be clean at the Combine) and this story is meaningless.

If he did test positive then Buffalo knows he’s a juicer and will adjust his position on their draft board accordingly.

Since Buffalo should have had access to drug screening info by now (right?) and Buffalo is high on the guy it could mean that the report is untrue. Or that Buffalo doesn’t care that it is true.

by Ron From NM on Apr 3, 2009 9:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It is my understanding that the official “who’s not smart enough to lay off the juice / bud for the one month prior to the combine” list has not been released to the teams yet,

Here’s a link to a PFT story about Raji’s positive test. In the second paragraph, Florio, quoting someone else, mentions that the list hasn’t been circulated to the teams yet.

That's amazing!

Teams are expected to make multi-million dollar decisions without having access to the drug testing results take at the Combine? What’s the point of even doing the drug testing at the Combine then?

by Ron From NM on Apr 3, 2009 9:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They get the list eventually if I am not mistaken.

I just don’t know when that list is handed over.

i really don't care

either way…..unless they’re going to get in trouble or suspended it’s a non-issue in my book….all these guys get supplementation in some way, shape or form. Matthews has great value bc of his would be ability to blitz the passer with his speed

by MARVelous on Apr 3, 2009 9:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If it’s true then they start their careers on the NFL drug program and would be tested at random, about 4-5 times more often than other players. So one more slip up and these guys do get suspended. You would really have to feel good about how these players interviewed if you still wanted to take them as high as 11.

Your forearms can get bigger from lifting, but ummm, its hard to get them as big as your upper arm without some serious help, and I don’t mean protein shakes and doing exercises for them alone, thats alot of bulk.

If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.

I don't hold much stock into this report

this has come out before the official list have even been distributed? apparently this list never gets leaked and now all of a sudden it does. I wonder if the players that allegedly tested positive for steroids took a supplement or purchased products from companies that are on the NFL’s banned list. nutritional lines/companies such as GNC, Met-RX and Muscle-Tech are on the banned company list. Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine are on the list of banned substances. I’m reserving judgement until we find out more, if we ever do.

That sucks. One less option for the Bills. Performance enhancing drug situations are not to be overlooked, since how much of what they’ve accomplished was legit and how much was drug aided? What happens when they stop taking the ‘roids? In Cushing’s case, it probably means even more injuries.

Often times when a Man has been abusing steroids to much and too often when they cycle down from them they can get a Gyno effect which will lead to minnie man boobs because there body has become adjusted and dependent on the steroids that it’s stopped producing it’s Testosterone and DHT levels which would’ve been considered normal amounts and when they drop the roids they have a huge imbalance of Estrogen dominance which gives you exactly what you see in the picure of Cushings itty-bitty-TT’s up above.

I wonder if this will eliminate Matthews from OBD consideration. Cushing always looked more juiced to me. How long do steroids stay in the system? I’d wonder how long Matthews has been doing this.
The other thought that comes to mind is what kind of hit the USC program will take. Two LB’s doing illegal roids is a bit much. Not an isolated incident. Have to wonder what Pete Carroll is thinking now. Will he take any responsibility? Does USC test at all?

by keuka121 on Apr 3, 2009 2:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes they test.

And according to USC boosters they test more than any other program out there and it’s a clean program. Of course this is also the same program that the Ting brothers quit for med school purposes but only after one of them failed a test. (And their father just happens to be Arthur Ting, Barry Bond’s surgeon. http://grg51.typepad.com/steroid_nation/2007/11/suspicious-acti.html)

by twoeightnine on Apr 3, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, I googled it and USC does test. And both Matthews and Cushing have passed all the USC tests. Cushing looks maxed to me. Matthews does not. Even if Matthews is suspect, I’d seriously consider him. But the Peters situation might dictate OBD taking a LT with the first pick. If Peters is traded, let’s hope Matthews is there with our second pick.
