Bills Gearing Up for No-Huddle Offense in 2009
AFC East Blogger Tim Graham tells us about the Bills trying to reinvent their offense in 2009. Man, does this ever make football seem farther away than ever being it's not even May yet!

A team source says the Bills are gearing up to run a no-huddle offense in 2009. It would maximize their skill players and perhaps neutralize any offensive-line deficiencies by wearing out defenders.

Nice tidbit
The Bills also signed a brainy center to make the line calls. Geoff Hangartner scored 47 out of 50 on his Wonderlic intelligence test before the 2005 draft. That’s supposedly the record among offensive linemen.
There is only one NFL football team that plays in New York state...and Canada?

Sounds exciting to me BUT...
if we start going three-and-out like gangbusters, who is going to save OUR Defense?

it's
all about playing with a lead…..that’s Dick jauron’s whole philosophy for 2009. He wants the lead and then send the hounds on defense. Plus once you get the lead in teh 2nd half, that’s when you run the snot out of the ball and use those 3 backs to pound the defense into submission

Our defense
isn’t that bad. I would bet the Bills aren’t done adding components to the defense. I can see one or two more splashes before training camp rolls around. We should be much improved on defense, at least enough to support a more aggressive offense.

I don’t have a problem with taking advantage of the O weapons by going no-huddle (would probably play to Edwards’ strengths as well), but there IS a concern on any defense that has an offense that goes no huddle. Even if the O is putting up a lot of points, if they score too quickly, it could mean lots of Time of Possession for the opposing offense. This was a downfall of the 90s Bills.
Hopefully Turk WILL pound the rock with second half leads. That will solve that problem.

Are there really one or two big names out there? If anything they sign a LB like Brooks.

I love the no huddle
and feel its Buffalo’s identity that they’ve been searching for the last 10 years.
But we’re going to have 2 rookie guards, 2 tackles playing in new positions, and a center from another team. How the hell is that going to work?

With the no huddle, your running a very streamlined version of your playbook
Meaning where once before you ran say 20 plays out of a single formation setup with one variation of motion and with changing blocking assignments based on D setup and where the ball is going, cutting down to say 5 plays from a formation makes it ALOT easier for your lineman to learn. From personal experience learning only 5 things is alot easier to remember on the fly in a game situation versus 20.
All you need to do is give Trent the terminology to make it easy on the lineman, with the line calls being simplified (which was going to happen to begin with the 2 rooks anyway), this should just make it that much easier.
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
by WABillsfan on Apr 30, 2009 8:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And then once everyone gets accostumed to those 5 per formation you can do like Payton and start expanding. The Colts now run 10 to 15 plays per formation in the no huddle. But even Payton had to start somewhere. I like it, it uses our offence’s speed and the intellegence of our QB to call a play with what he sees. We could be very successful at this.

K-Gun was named for Keith McKeller, maybe Nelson is the key?
Just remember this offense wasn’t named after Jim Kelly. I think Edwards is smart enough, instinctive enough and confident enough to run it, but maybe if Shawn Nelson pans out and his blocking proves effective, he could be the reason it works. Having backs who can catch as well as run really helps too. You need versatile players, guys who can run or pass, short or long, out of the same personnel, cause there’s no time for substitutions, and I think the Bills are building that way. The key is to force defenses to try to defend a wide variety of offensive possibilities with one base set of personnel. So many defenses are built around substituting specialists into each down that they simply cannot cope with having to defend all situations with the same personnel, not to mention the fatigue factor.
But I like your enthusiasm… :)

despite Brian's
well written jairus byrd article that made me feel a little better about the Byrd pick instead of a LT or other position, I was still fearful of going into this season with our unathletic, guard based offensive line. All I could think about was Richard Seymour, Joey Porter, and Rex Ryan preparing their gameplans for the Bills entirely around attacking our tackles and putting the hurt on Edwards.
This news, if true, makes me feel much much better in that regard. The no huddle could be exactly what we need to mask our offensive lines pass protection deficiencies by not giving defenses enough time to dial up their attacks on our edges. It also is going to flabergast secondaries trying to stop Terrell Owens and Lee Evans, as if that wasn’t going to be hard enough, now they are going to have to think fast, react fast, and react properly to stop them. The odds of them doing all three a majority of the time are slim. So opposing secondary players are either going to be recognizing plays too slowly, a step late, or out of position. If they are doing any one of those its up to Trent because Lee and Terrell will be open.

The no-huddle is to an inexperienced o-line
what the wildcat is to lack of skill players. This is exactly what we need without a start LT. I think the lack of a OT pick makes even more sense now.

I like the no huddle, but there is a down side
The offense has to be able to sustain drives and score TDs. Field goals are not good enough. You have to put pressure on the other offense to try to score quickly to catch up which should play to the strength of our bend but don’t break Tampa 2 hybrid (or whatever the hell we run). If we settle for field goals, it puts way to much pressure on the defense to get the ball back quickly, something our defense is not designed to do. Grind it out power running teams eventually wear out our defense by winning the time of possession battle and keeping the game close until the 4th quarter (see Bills vs Giants SB).
I would still rather be a power running team. I would hope the Bills stick with the power running game and mix in the no huddle in small doses. Not sexy, but it wins games. Baby steps folks!

power running would be ideal, you and I have wanted a fullback for a while too!

I don't see why we can't be a power running team
Run blocking is easier than pass blocking. It allows your young studs to attack instead of play “defense” like they have to when pass blocking. I just don’t want us to abandon the run and lost the TOP battle. Not a good way to win game late in the season.

Why can’t we include power running plays in our no hudle? i know the no hudle is traditionally a throw first offence, but if we can split the plays 50/50 run pass, then we also keep the opposing d’s on their toes. Plus, as it’s been said many times above, if we run a sucessfull no huddle in the first half and get a 7-10 point lead at the end of the first, then we can run our 3 RB’s down their throats in the second half.

power running
I wanted a power running team more than anything and I thought going into the offseason the team was only a few players away, but the way this off-seaon turnned out, I don’t think this team is build for power running right now. They lost their best run-blocking O-lineman. They gained a WR that will demand the ball. The interior o-line will be young and inexerienced. New TE that is known more for pass-catching rather than blocking. Never picked up a true FB that would make a real difference.
I love power running and wanted to model this team after Pittsburgh, but the Bills decided to go in a different direction. I’m okay with that. I love the no-huddle. I just hope there is not so much predictability this season. Turk: YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE IN SHOTGUN EVERYTIME TO THROW THE BALL!! Some play-action and misdirection would be nice as well.

Yaaaawwwnnnn
We heard the same thing last offseason! I know they blamed Peters holdout (I think) for not actually doing it early, but we still didn’t see it once he returned.
To me, this sounds like a pass oriented offense more than anything. Is this really a good idea? With a LT that could/should struggle and some interior rookies who need some time when it comes to pass blocking, this seems like it could backfire. Shouldn’t we worry about making sure the rooks are up to speed and we can run the ball? Or is this “no-huddle” approach simply calling the plays at the line? If that’s the case, the staff must really think Trent is ready to take the next step.
I have no issues with going no-huddle each game, I just don’t want to hear them talking about it and it never showing up. I think it would be better for Trent because he can just go play instead of over-thinking like he did last year. He did some of his best work in two minute situations where they didn’t huddle. I’d like to see that success replicated.
One thing….if they actually do plan to utilize the no-huddle a lot and multiple times a game, they better be sure their OL is in great shape. I’m looking at you Langston Walker. Jim Richter made a good point in the article about the need for the OL to be in good shape. This can’t be run if Walker can’t keep up. I dread the big guy being winded as we keep hustling to the line to keep the D off guard and getting torched off the edge by a DE. I doubt they allow that to happen though.
It would be called the Stun Gun right?

A no-huddle is actually a decent way to hide shortcomings on the line, assuming you do well with it- the theory being that you wear them out because they don’t get defensive subs, and with defense having to chase a ballcarrier and everything, that can get to them. Also, it would help with getting the rooks in there on the line because (presumably) the line blocking schemes would be relatively simplistic. You’re entirely right with the line having to be in good shape, I’m wondering if the youth movement there was a factor.
I’m really not sure how they’d do the playcalling.
I like the Stun Gun. If its a failure, it can be the Nerf Gun. I wish we had a Tom on the team, because I’d love to call it the Tommy Gun if it was a success.
Like any offense though, this will come down to the playcalling. If they play to the team’s and system’s strengths, this could work perfectly. If they pull a repeat of last year’s offensive playcalling (woo, double entendre) then we’re sunk.

Love the nick name K
What I hope we’ll see is at first Trent just calling a few plays at the line, as opposed to the K Gun or the Colts no huddle, and then as the team gets more comfortable, and (hopefully) Bell gets more and more ready to take snaps at LT and our rooks getting expirience, we’ll see a progression to the Stun Gun. That would be the ideal for Trent and Our O.
BTW I too think a no huddle offence is ideal for Trent, one because he is deffinatly smart enough to run a very good no huddle, and two, it will stop him from over thinking plays and let him just use his insticts.
I’m looking forward to this if it happens. Go Stun Gun!

at the end of the day
it’s a QB’s league, a passing league and that’s how you score points. Turk is doing what he knows….he learned the damn thing under Coach Wyche the inventor. This is his forte and this is what he knows. So that’s why it’s a good ideal. If we’re going down, we’re going down with Turk’s strength. Regardless of how you feel about it, this team has to Score way more points to win football games and the no-huddle is a step in that direction. I totally agree with what the Bills have tried to do offensively all off-season and it continues with this implementation however mild or big they plan to use it.
