Unhappy Jackson not at team workouts : Buffalo News
Hooray for more holdouts!
Bills RB Fred Jackson sought a multi-year contract extension in the off-season. He got a tender offer instead. Now Jackson is "conspicuously absent" from voluntary workouts. Note the importance of the word "voluntary", but also keep this in the back of your mind.
Of the utmost importance before you freak out is this line from the article: "The Bills and Jackson's agent, Jerome Douglas, have been talking about a longer-term deal for several weeks."
Who here thinks the Bills should just pay the man?

Haha awesome!
Will everyone call Jackson a bad person now, like many did for Peters? Jackson has a year and a half of experience and he wants a long term deal? Hmmmm.
I think the Bills should give him a new contract because it shouldn’t be too costly, but I also think he should be criticized if he’s pulling the same routine as Peters. It’s only fair!

I missed the part where Jackson signed an extension????
I agree he should get a new contract (same as I said about Peters), but treat him the same way as Peters if he pulls the same hold out crap. Maybe he is unhappy, so we should trade him for a Diet Dr. Pepper!

same routine?
I mean, is he asking to be paid lik the best RB in football? Its unclear yet, but I doubt it. So that is not liek Peters who is asking for more money than anyone else at his position.
He should be given an extension however, especially with Lynch’s suspension looming and the uncertain future of Marshawn’s behavior. I mean, he makes doggy doo-doo in terms of money, so i’d say at least a 3 year, 9-10 mil deal isn’;t out of the question

I said IF!!!!!!!!!!
But there are similarities, albeit the size of the contract definitely isn’t one. Jackson only has a year and a half of playing experience in the NFL, has little leverage and if he does stay away, then ihes doing what Peters did as well.
Again, I’m not saying don’t pay Freddie or he isn’t deserving, but I’m just trying to point out how Peters was criticized almost immediately for staying away wanting more money. I doubt Jackson does the same thing, and I doubt the Bills don’t pay him, but if it turns sour, then he should be criticized all the same.
4 yr $10-12M, much of it guaranteed….

You're right in that respect
He should not be staying away from any workouts (of course they’re mandatory) because of a contract issue. Evans came to all his workouts, etc. and got his cash. If Jackson continues talks, and lets his play and determination in practice determine his fate, than he should be fine.
He is a RB and the shelf life isn’t long, but he has talent and although he is or is going tobe 28 this year, he just stick to doing his thing, and hopefully he’ll see a contract come October like Parrish a couple years ago

I hope he gets his contract before October....
I think he will be making like 500k for signing his tender. Then if he gets hurt, nothing. The Bills really have him by the cajones.

I was just thinking about what a good player Jackson is as I was re-watching the 2008 Bills vs. Jaguars game. I’d like to see Jackson get paid.

I try to watch, record, and re-watch as much college and NFL football games as I can.
That’s the only way that I can attempt to evaluate what a player can or cannot do. Often times I need to get a second or a closer look at a player again. That’s how I formulate my opinions on players. Otherwise, I have no basis for player discussions.

PAY THE MAN!!!
This isn’t even in the same ballpark as the Peters situation. All he’s asking for is a small commitment, and he deserves it more than most. Get this done Russ.

He may be asking for more than a #2 tailback. I doubt it, but he is hitting his biggest market value at the same moment he is getting HUGE pressure to keep the ground attack alive on Monday Night Football.
TS: “Here’s the new plays, Fred. Just sign off that you went over them.”

He may be getting his biggest market value...
but at the minimum he has to play here for peanuts this year, then next year he’s a RFA at best. The Bills can retain his rights for another 3-4 years without letting him hit the open market. By that time he’ll be in his 30s and won’t be able to cash in. He needs to take the Bills moderate deal.

its good to tender him anyways – if i recall – no one can go ahead and start talks with him. so he’s basically ours at this piont – i’m sure they’ll come to a concensus (even if it means cutting Kelsay)

jackson
I don’t get it. In Madden a guy who is such an over-achiever as Jackson, you reward guys like that. Give him a few million in a signing bonus and end it. Jackson realizes the window for him to make a few million is right now, and he can’t afford to keep playing for peanuts compared to his production. I completely get it, but in fairness, he only has like 1.5 yr of doing much

It’s voluntary offseason work outs and the Bills are apparently talking to his agent about a long-term deal. Not a big deal to me until he NEEDS to be at events. Besides, its probably on the back-burner until the Draft anyway. But it should get done, he’s worth keeping around.

Since they've been talking for weeks
is it safe to assume Jackson wants a lot more than the Bills are willing to offer?
That sounds like it could be the case to me, unless the number of years is way off….

Might mean they exchanged a couple phone calls for all we know. I’m sure they’ll have something together for him by training camp.

That’s true, though it sounds more in depth than a couple of phone calls. You could be right, but to me it does sound like they’re actively trying to get something done, not just discussing the possibility of it.

I just think between the draft and the Peters situation, they’ve got more than enough to do. Also, Jackson’s perspective contract may include a lot of performance bonuses that are hard to iron out. I would expect to hear more once OTAs roll around.
by syrbillsfan on Apr 6, 2009 2:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The timing of it all is a good point. I’d hope the FO tells Freddy to hold off a few weeks and they’ll iron something out in May. Right now, they’ve definitely got other things on their mind!

well I was just arguing why they should "pay the man" like you said in the last sentence.....
so taking weeks to do something that should be pretty simple…….is what Im referring too…….
How is it that money to Denny, Schobel, Dock, Walker can be knocked out in a matter of hours/days…..but someone like Jackson who deserves more than just a “tender” takes weeks/months?

Whatever. I’ll worry about it when he actually has to show up. There is a good chance that this means nothing. Buffalo is probably planning on giving him a new contract after the draft anyways. We still have awhile before training camp starts.
Buffalo has shown that they are willing to hand out extensions during training camp and the regular season. I’m sure that they can get Jackson to show up to OTAs or training camp at the latest by simply starting negotiations and promising to get a deal done.
by kaisertown on Apr 6, 2009 1:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
However, the organization has set a precidence with Peters’ situation. We don’t know what was really “promised,” but it sounded at one point like the team was going to talk/negotiate a contract with JP during last season – now here they are again. I can see any number of players saying: “why should I show up on good faith? If I get injured halfway in, all bets are off on an extension.”

just release both Jackson and Peters
Ralph needs the money for his 401k…
Seriously, I’m guessing Jackson will get a new contract after the draft and Peters will be dealt on draft day.
by dzil on Apr 6, 2009 2:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I’d guess that too. If Jackson goes the Bills would either have to:
A: Draft a running back
B: Look for a capable reserve on the free-agent wire
C: Hope X-Man can actually perform at Jackson’s level of ability, something he has not yet shown he can do.
D: Engineer a trade for a reserve, presumably as part of a deal involving Peters and/or Parrish
I think paying Jackson is a better option than any of these.

Irresponsible reporting....what a surprise.
Where’s Gaughan’s source that allows him to speak for Jackson’s “unhappiness?.” This is similar to the original reaction of the media when Owens was a “no show” at workouts. With the looming suspension of Marshawn Lynch, and the potential games he could possibly miss if he gets an injury, I’m not concerned about the Bills desire to pay Jackson a fair wage. Nor am I concerned about the level of Jackson’s unhappiness. My gut feeling is Gaughan’s scraping the barrel for “news.” I could be wrong, but this seems a little overblown.

Re-sign Jackson
Jackson is a big part of Buffalo’s offense. In my opinion he is one of the best receiving running backs in the NFL. Furthermore, he already has good chemistry (on the field at least) with Trent Edwards.
Turk Schonert wants to run an offense similar to the one Sam Wyche ran in Cincinatti. This offense requires continuity which would obviously involve keeping Fred Jackson. Not to be overly optimistic, but if the Bills have Marshawn Lynch, Fred Jackson, Terrell Owens, Lee Evans, and Josh Reed as weapons for Trent Edwards, they are going have one of the most potent offenses in the NFL. This all is assuming Trent Edwards receives adequate protection.
