ProFootballTalk.com - Lions Locking In On Stafford
PFT is reporting, via anonymous source, that the Detroit Lions are leaning toward selecting Georgia QB Matthew Stafford with the top overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft.
Of course, it's not a done deal until Stafford and the Lions - if the report is accurate and the two sides move forward from here - agree to a lucrative contract. That's a major hurdle. And again, this could just be one of the more eloquently-placed smoke screens in NFL Draft history.
If true, however, this leaves the door open for a potential Jason Peters-to-Detroit trade. Let the speculation continue.

But if Peters wants the long term deal
You’ve basically gotten two players that each cost as much as two top 3 picks in the draft. It is risky, but Peters is proven so there is less risk there, and you’d hate to have the top QB in the draft running for his life when you’re team is hoping to at least be 1-15
However, I am not sure about the Lions RB situation, but you could of course grab Moreno at 20, and then get Peters for two second round picks…is that good?

Your point about the two contracts is the only valid reason to believe that something might not happen. I still believe that they’d at least be interested, though my guess would be that they wouldn’t offer anything more than #33 and #65.

Hmm…but the more picks they offer, the less draft picks they need to sign as well.

Once you get into the second round, though, rookie contracts aren’t even close to prohibitive.

I'd be happy with that
33 and 65….how would that stack up against the picks the Pats have accumulated in those rounds?

It's not ideal
but it’s acceptable at this point. It’d be basically a late 1st and late 2nd….not bad value at all….

It’s actually pretty close to what Philly’s first and third would be.

Except with one we could get Pettigrew or Matthews and one we can't.

true
The Lions would probably want to help out the defense…its sad, but with so many holes on that team, its known that you can only do so much in one year. They’ll be getting a top 5 pick next year in most cases. i really do not see a Miami-like turn around.

I was saying the same things about the Falcons last offseason. But then again, I’m not too confident in Stafford to play like Matt Ryan and that defense to patch together a solid season like Atlanta did either. It wouldn’t surprise me for Detroit to work their way out of the top 5, but anything better than that would be totally shocking.
And your right that defense will be a huge focus for them. They only have a few players to really build around and they do have a defensive HC. I would be surprosed if they don’t spend one of their first three picks on defense and then spend well more than half of their remaining picks on D too.

Lions will be in a tough division next year.
The Packers are fine with Aaron Rodgers. He had more tds and less ints than Cutler, and nearly as many yards. They both have strong arms, and with each team being about equal at the RB spot, I see the Pack and the Bears having an even stronger rivalry.
Minnesota, is always a wild card. Best runner in the game, and a solid defense. I don’t see the Lions doing much to any of these teams just yet. Maybe with the Bears if their D doesn’t play well, and if the Packers keep underachieving

Curtis Lofton was a pretty darn good rookie LB for ATL last year, and John Abraham was a terror for their pass rush. That definitely helped them….

Re
IMO, the Lions need to take a chance on a QB. You got to address it at some point, and while no on wants to give any 21 year old $40 million guaranteed dollars on a coin flip that he may or may not work out, that’s the bed the Lions are in. I think Sanchez has the better talent, but I think Stafford is more equipped as a person to handle the burden of fame, money and expectations in Detroit.
Now, if this were to happen, and Sanchez goes to San Fran, let the auction begin at #11 for Josh Freeman

If they do take Stafford, they have to do everything they can to protect him. Peters would be a geat pickup for them…

My guess is there D sux too, so they would probably want to address that as well, not trade all of their picks. One first rounder would be better than giving up two twos or a two and a three

Good for the Bills .
One more LT on the board when we pick at #11 and one less QB on the board if the someone wants to trade of for Freeman :-)

Trading with the Jets is an unwise move. Why allow that team to potentially draft a good QB? Honestly, no one knows if he’s going to boom or bust. You have to err on the side of caution.

because it would be in the Bills best interest to get the best deal.
Freeman is more likely to turn into JP than Flacco, IMO.

Agreed
Very few Rookie QB’s are sucessful. Ryan and Flacco were he exception to the rule, hell they were both more sucessful than Payton Manning was in his rookie season! I’d be willing to risk giving the Jets a decent QB if it means that we make our team better.

q
I don’t think very many teams draft a QB thinking he’ll be an overnight success. Well, they shouldn’t anyway. It’s more important how that QB handles the years ahead of him. This is the telling year for Flacco and Ryan – even Aaron Rodgers, if you want to get right down to it.

i hate
the “you can’t trade to another team in your division” debate. if we can get a great deal from the Jets, we have to take it. Plus, this organization is looking short term with their jobs on the line, not long term. Gotta win now. Plus we’ll be in Toronto in 4 years anyhow…..sic

i was in that camp for a while – not necessarily Tononto – but after Ralph the team moves to somewhere.
now i’m actually a lot more comfortable than i use to be – NYS is very supportative of the Bills being in WNY. Erie county obviously as well. Having Goodell on our side definatley helps as well. the problem as i see it is the economies of scale – we have a very time matching up against different economies in various cities.
however, the recession actually improves our chances of the Bills staying. I think its possible or even likely the Bills will remain in WNY. I could see them try to regionalize them even furthur by trying to become the NF Bills or something – depending on what compensation Erie county would receive – they do have discussions and plans with niagara county as far as the Bills are related so I see that to be promising.
there’s hope marv

I agree because I think that Freeman is a pretty risky investment, but teams do get really wrapped up in getting the top QB on their board. The Ravens and Flacco is a pretty good example. Freeman could fall out of the first round if no teams love him, or he could go in the top 10.
by kaisertown on Apr 8, 2009 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I would guess that the success of Flacco will make team more likely to take Freeman earlier than he should go.
I hope it is early enough to help the Bills.

oh for shizzo
Freeman, won’t last in this draft. Buffalo is in a great position picking ahead of Denver in this draft. Great position. Freeman is a guy that will draw significant interest once Sanchez goes off the board

Tampa Bay is the team to watch
Closely followed by the Jets, depending on how the top 5 plays out, if say Stafford AND Sanchez are gone, we can soak someone for a ton of picks.
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
