With a glut of wide receivers and a 2008 first-round defensive back (Leodis McKelvin) who can return kicks on the roster, the Buffalo Bills are testing the waters for interest in Roscoe Parrish.
According to a league source, the Bills are shopping Parrish, primarily as an exploratory measure.

Well there’s a surprise…..
I’m making a deal if we can get a 4th or better for him.

yeah – good job guys at figuring on the Parrish speculation months ago.

So how much is the league's best punt returner worth?
If we can package him to get a guard or linebacker back, or something like that, that would be great. Otherwise, I,m thinking a 4th rounder might be good.

So, being that I think the Iggles are looking for receivers, could we throw him in a deal with Peters and improve the return? Otherwise, I’m with K- a fourth or better and I’d be fine with shipping him.

I doubt the Eagles want him. Jackson is a good punt returner for them already, and they have enough little receivers. They need a bigger, possession guy, IMO.

How about to the Chiefs?
Is Waters still on the market?

I like where your head is at.
We might have to throw a 4th in to make that deal happen but if it’s me, I do that like yesterday. :-)
P.S. – I think the Bills have talked to the Chiefs and that topic has come up….

Yeah, I’m thinking that the Cheifs want a 3rd and Parrish or something.

For a player the caliber of Water? I would ship a 3rd or 4th and parrish.

Thats what I was saying, the Bills probably offered a 4th or 5th and Parrish, but the Chiefs probably want at least a third… then again their new GM did say that he wasn’t going to trade Waters, so who knows.
by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 9, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions
wow, 2 picks and 1 player for a 32 years old G ?
I’d give only a 4th round and Roscoe, nothing more.
read it again please...
I said, a 3rd OR 4th and Parrish for the likes of Waters.
"If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?"

all good...
I also think the Bills would actually get a pick in return along with a player. Like Waters (who most likely wont go anywhere anyhow) and a 6th rounder for Parrish and a 3rd or 4th.

Yeah, but....
….look at the production the Eagles got out of Desean Jackson. They might like the little guys, kind of like the Oilers did in their Chuck-N-Duck.
What about the Saints?

this
just doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me…..he’s unreal at punt returns, and McKelvin should primarily be a CB not a KR/PR.
Parrish is electric. A Game changer. I thought Dick Jauron wanted more game changers not less? That’s counterintuitive for a Yale guy isn’t?

I am with you Marv.......the guy drops a few balls as a WR and everyone forgets
all the field position he has given us and some TDs too.

Keep in mind that the talks are exploratory. They’re not going to dump him just to dump him. They won’t make the move unless he’s packaged or they can get solid value…

as long as Parrish doens't hold out. If he even suggests it, then we should dump him for a double latte and a scone :-)

Guess I am busted......
I was just beating the “trade Peters for whatever he can get” dead horse with a different stick.

It makes total sense...
What does field position get you if you cant move the ball anyhow? Like it says, this is exploratory, but, I firmly believe that McCelvin, Jackson if/when in camp, a rookie db or wr or even John Wendling. We just need to have someone back there to field the punt cleanly and average about 7-8 yds per return we would be good. If we can get a something out of a trade involving Roscoe it would be an excellent move.
"If winning isn't everything, why do they keep score?"

he’s unreal at punt returns
Is he though?
He scores that TD in the first game of the year and then does what? Occasionally, he’ll give us a nice return, but it’s not like this guy is an unstoppable force or something.
Remember, Freddie Jackson had a number of nice returns in Parrish’s absence last year. Obviously, Roscoe is a better returner, but this also seems to indicate how good the team is at setting up blocks and getting our returner free.

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Didn't he have the highest punt return average in the league?
Part of that is Bobby April but part of it is Roscoe Parrish.
Well I never said he was a bad punt returner. He’s very, very good in fact, but I think he’s very replaceable and we shouldn’t think of him as some demi-god of the punt return realm. With April’s great coaching, I think we can have very similar success even with a lesser punt returner….
~K
"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
I don’t know about that. Parrish has some pretty unique moves when he’s got a little space. April can set up the blocking for pretty much any punt returner but that returner has to have natural ability to make it work.
but how many of his big returns do you remember being great because of the moves Roscoe made to evade tacklers? Much of his success can be attributed to April and co. Roscoe didn’t free himself for the big return against Seattle, April’s team did, Roscoe just finished it unlike many other guys in the league.

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Parrish made some pretty sweet moves in that Seattle return. I’m not saying the another guy couldn’t do well with April’s blocking schemes but I don’t think just any guy could do as well as Parrish.
Well obviously not any old guy could do it. We still need to put a quality return man back there. We can’t just toss Chris Watson back there and expect similar results. I like what I saw of Fred Jackson last year, and we know Leo is dynamite with the ball in his hands.
I’ll have to start investigating draft prospects to see if any RB’s and DB’s have return ability. It’d be kind of pointless to draft a late round WR to replace him.

i'm not worried
bout the field position, i’m worried about the explosive BIG PLAYS. With T.O and Evans, Parrish is a guy that could be more lethal when he does get his touches. I just hate the idea of moving him. He can score from anywhere on the field, and I say the MORE weapons you have the better. I know it’s just exploratory but my guess is this regime has never liked Roscoe, and now with Leodis they feel they can finally dump him
MARVelous - "I went from America's team to North America's Team" Terrell Owens
He has done nothing in the passing game...
Even when he gets the ball. The lone recollection I have is him taking a slant to the house a while back. He caught a TD against Oakland that had nothing to do with quickness or his speed. He just doesn’t do what we need him to do.

For the purpose of perspective:
Roscoe makes 3 mil this year and 1.5 mil in 2010 and 2011.
Dante Hall was traded from KC to STL for the 148th pick (early/mid 5th round). The teams also swapped third rounders, but that only led to KC moving up two spots from the 84th pick to the 82nd pick.
Hall had 26 catches for 204 yards and 2 TDs as a WR in 2006 and only averaged 8.9 yards per punt return and 22.8 yards per kick return despite being one of the best returners in the league for a few years in a row before that. So, I’m not really sure how he compares considering they were/are (which word should I use there?) similiar receivers while Roscoe is a MUCH better PR, but Hall offered value as a KR that Roscoe probably doesn’t.
Personally, I wouldn’t mind keeping him one bit. He is overpaid this year, but his 1.5 mil salary the couple seasons after is very reasonable for arguably the best punt returner in the league. If his value is a 5th rounder like Hall, then I’m probably going to hold onto him. If it’s a 4th then I would probably deal him.
Agreed
He is overpaid this yar, but the final 2 years of his contract are VERY resonable. I think the Bills are just seeing what he’s worth on the trade market, and theres no problem doing that. I mean by chance a team offers us a third rounder for him, why wouldn’t they take it?
by CanadianBillsFan on Apr 9, 2009 8:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Exactly. You never know what team thinks they can make a Super Bowl run and is willing to make a desperate move. Or maybe someone even thinks they can make Roscoe into a good WR.
I agree here
As a special teamer, allbeit not the gunner type, Parrish is the best punt returner in the league, and over the following two years is very affordable. I like him as a bargaining chip, as I think every team has a handful of players that while they still like them, are open to trading depending on circumstance. I’m sure that is one think all front offices are looking around for and speculating about, players on other teams who might be trade bait.
Just like how we got stroud last year.
If we keep him, I wouldn’t mind, but if we trade him, I’d rather it be to sweeten a deal with Peters
The Bills CAN win every game
Yeah, I can take it or leave. I like the idea of throwing him in with Peters. I also like the idea of trading him and a pick for Waters. Lots of possibilities here.
Would a draft pick, like a 4th
That we would probably use on an unproven guard be worth it for Waters?
Probably, but if you draft a guy, he comes cheaper, and we might be better off in the long run
The Bills CAN win every game
Agreed, thats my take
Why not see what people will give, and if someone is insane enough to offer a three or four alone for him, take it and run. If he is only pulling fifth rounders, see what he and Peters will pull together.
If the Bills were a drug, I could only hope they were like speed so I could lose some weight as well.
I'm okay with trading him...
If it helps yeild another player (e.g. Waters). Otherwise, at his price, I think it would be better to keep him. I really want Waters, especially since it’s looking more and more like we are going to have a rookie LT this season.
John I.
The question is whether or not Parrish will develop a stick in his butt over the trade talk. Surely he must have expected it given his lackluster receiving numbers but I can still see it stinging his pride.
For the record, if the Bills get an offer of a 3rd from someone in the division and a 4th somewhere else I hope they go with the 4th….preferably in the NFC.
Drew Beldsoe
Bills offered a first.
Everyone else offered a second.
Bledsoe on the Bills (which I think actually helped the Pats out as well…….)
It’s the only trade between us and a division rival I can think of.

develop a stick in his butt
now that would have to hurt……..his trade value!!!!!
If corn oil is made from corn, and vegetable oil is made from vegetables, what is baby oil made from?
They would probably go as high as a 4th, but nothing more
We need to know whats going on with KC and Waters…. Argh!

For now he has said so, but it doesn't mean we can't pry him from them at some point

I’ve been wanting to trade for Waters for a while now, but lets be realistic, Waters is their ONLY good lineman, everyone else is either in development or as mediocre a Duke Preston. I honestly think that unles they get a godfather offer, Waters isn’t going anywhere.
