Andre Smith
The Bills were reportedly very interested in Andre Smith. I, among some others, hoped that Smith would be taken at #6 by the Bengals (and he indeed was) because he seemed to be something of a headcase and he wasn't exactly in the greatest possible shape on his pro day. (That picture still gives me shivers.) Well, according to PFT Andre Smith has fired his agent for the second time in about 2 months.
I am delighted that the draft worked out as it did and Andre Smith won't be Buffalo's problem for the next 4-6 years.

Among other things there were serious doubts that Smith could play LT in the NFL and it was said that a number of teams were thinking of converting him to Guard. If so, he would have been a very expensive Guard, in addition to being a headcase. May the Bengals enjoy him.

I thought talent-wise he was the best.
But not off the field. Part of me is glad we don’t have him.
Playing Realistic Optimist at Buffalo Rumblings since 2008. Fear can hold you prisoner. Hope can set you free.

My thoughts exactly. He might be an increadibly talented player, but if he pisses it all away with lack of maturity and mood swings he wont be of any use to anyone. Somehow Mike Williams comes to mind.

in hindsight
I’m not as mad as I would have been if you told me this before the draft without saying we got Maybin. I really didnt expect us to take a DE at #11 not named Ayers, even if I wanted us to. I’ll take Maybin over Smith. But I would take Smith over Matthews, Ayers, and a number of others.
Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. - Pete Prisco
Brandon Rodd!! Our best player.

I’d rather have had a consistent if unspectacular DE or LB than a headcase LT. The good news is that Buffalo never had to make the choice between Smith and, say, Maybin. It’s not out of the question that Smith becomes a stud but the issues around him are unsettling.

Given where he ended up, I think the scale might get tipped more towards bust.

I’m in the exact same spot as you Poz. I was never all that high on Smith, but OBD’s reported interest in him left me hoping he fell and would be the pick because I was afraid of what Buffalo was going to do. Our Bills were such an unknown this draft that the pick could have been anything and I would have preferred Smith to somebody like Pettigrew or the USC LBs. But I will take Maybin over Smith all day.

Agreed.....I would have been happy if we took Smith, but I am happier the way things worked

that isnt a good sign is it?
that the fans have become fearful of who are team will select? It really shouldn’t be that way. But like you said, Smith beats out most of the reaches we were considering.

I didn't want Smith anyhow
I still wish we would have taken Oher. With all the bad press we have been getting, it would have been a great story. We still could have gotten a good DE later. After saying that, I’m not unhappy with the way things turned out.
Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

I think Oher wasn't too high on the Bills board
I think there were some whispers about him having the strangest interview the Bills had ever had.

I would have the same reaction to the draft the way it is, or if it included Smith. Wait and see.

solid poll/post…but do you have to perpetuate TO’s “issues”?
