1/12/91: AFC Divisional Playoffs - Bills 44, Dolphins 34.
Honestly, there isn't anything better than watching a classic Kelly/Marino duel that the Bills won. Who here thinks that these two teams could put up 78 combined points in a playoff game in the snow today?
Beautiful offense. Simply glorious.

Yeah it's working for me now!
-God I love Thurman Thomas. I need to get me a Thomas jersey.
-How many times since Kelly left have the Bills scored within two minutes of the start of the game?
-Gotta love the single bar facemask on Norwood.
-See that second field goal? It’s from inside the ten. Even those Bills had to kick short field goals…. of course they could score a lot of TDs too.
-Duper was so good. Underrated IMO.
-Dan Marino could run that far?
-Bruce Smith is like non-existent here. Richmond Webb was very, very good.
-The krumble…. the most destructive turnover in sports
-These guys had Thurman Thomas and they are passing in the snow. Kelly calling his own plays I guess.
I’m sure I watched this game on TV but I have no recollection of it at all. I was 7.

I have maintained many times on this site that Bruce Smith nearly always (not always, but nearly always) disappeared in the biggest games. He was easily the most frustrating player to watch as a Bills fan, because the announcers talked about him non-stop, and yet his play on the field in the big games rarely lived up to the hype, rarely lived up to his play against lesser competition.

He had a safety in Super Bowl XXV.
Richmond Webb was drafted to stop Bruce. It worked sometimes.

The safety was early in the game. Smith and the entire Bills’ defense disappeared after that. And the Dolphins weren’t exactly the better competition I was talking about.
During the years before the K-Gun attack (late 80s), Smith and the Bills’ defense carried them as far as they went. But they only went as far as the AFC championship game, which they lost. After the institution of the no-huddle offense, that was when the Bills began going places (as in Super Bowls). But they never had an imposing defense that the best competition had to worry about. Look at the way the Giants, with their backup QB, manhandled them. Look at how many points the Dolphins, in the snow, put up against them.

The Giants didn't manhandle them.
If I remember correctly they manhandled the offense. They lined up and punched guys in the mouth. The defense wasn’t the problem in XXV.
When it mattered, the Dolphins offense put up 27 points while the Bills were scoring at will. The defense picked off two or three passes. I wish we could get more than one turnover in a game now.

He did enough to go to the Hall. I’ll take 99 years of Bruce Smith complaining and disappearing for a game over what this team has now. I’d take Bruce Smith in his 40’s over Kelsay in his 20’s – and they don ’t even play comparable sides.

Comparing Bruce Smith to what we have now is not what I’m talking about. I simply don’t worship the ground he walks on like most Bills fans appear to.

I love this clips!
Even though I know where to find them, I still don’t go looking for them. They’re nice little treats when I stop by. The Glory Days. I miss those days. Thurman and Reed… two of my all time favs.

Priceless
Have you guys ever thought about doing a “Where are they now?” type of piece every so often? I’d love to know how people like Bennet, Seales, Kelso, Odomes and Kent Hull are doing. Even Leonard Smith if he hasn’t injured someone else like he always did with his own team.
It's a neat idea.
Mark Kelson is in Buffalo. He coaches HS football and does color commentary for the Bills radio broadcasts.

Kelso’ s got this tough-guy voice that really doesn’t match his appearance…or his helmet.

I forgot how big Marino’s head is. They had to take a Gatorade bucket, poke eyeholes in it and paint a Dolphin on the side so he could have something on his giant melon.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
Nice use of a terrible movie.

Oh come on man. That was a great flick! The father was the best character ever!
All right it was crap.

movie... bad
the father in that movie … priceless! His lines are so funny. I still quote that movie. “Piper down” has a regular rotation in my weird catchphrase bin.

Man oh man were those guys ever good.
I never had the pleasure to watch either Kelly or Marino when they were playing, and all that I’ve got to say is wow, for both of them. You’ve got to be special team to be able to do that in the snow.
