It's been an unusually loud month of May for the Buffalo Bills.  Actual football news - rare for the month of May - has been rampant, from multiple legal issues to free agent visits to Terrell Owens' reality television show.  Now, the Bills' Organized Team Activities are set to begin today - and yes, Buffalo's prize new wideout is expected to be in attendance.

With that in mind, it's always fun to make our first guesses at a 53-man roster before the first full-team activities of the year.  At the very least, this exercise will open up some different discussion avenues than what we've had recently (with VH1, alcohol, and even alleged bizarre crimes making headlines).  Clearly, this insanely early guess is probably destined to be severely wrong come fourth months from now - but hey, it's May.

Clearly, some things might change.  Future free agent signings (Pisa Tinoisamoa, perhaps?) or trades (isn't Roscoe Parrish still on the block?) would alter this projection.  If things don't change, however, here's my best guess at what the Bills' opening day roster would look like:

Quarterbacks (3)
STARTER: Trent Edwards
BACKUPS: Ryan Fitzpatrick, Gibran Hamdan

Running Backs (4)
STARTER: Marshawn Lynch
BACKUPS: Fred Jackson, Dominic Rhodes, Corey McIntyre

Tight Ends (3)
STARTER: Derek Fine
BACKUPS: Derek Schouman, Shawn Nelson*

Wide Receivers (6)
STARTERS: Lee Evans, Terrell Owens
BACKUPS: Josh Reed, Roscoe Parrish, Steve Johnson, James Hardy

Offensive Tackles (4)
STARTERS: Langston Walker, Brad Butler
BACKUPS: Kirk Chambers, Demetrius Bell

Guards/Centers (4)
STARTERS: Andy Levitre*, Geoff Hangartner, Eric Wood*
BACKUP: Seth McKinney

Defensive Ends (5)
STARTERS: Aaron Schobel, Chris Kelsay
BACKUPS: Ryan Denney, Aaron Maybin*, Chris Ellis

Defensive Tackles (4)
STARTERS: Marcus Stroud, Kyle Williams
BACKUPS: Spencer Johnson, John McCargo

Outside Linebackers (5)
STARTERS: Kawika Mitchell, Pat Thomas
BACKUPS: Keith Ellison, Nic Harris*, Alvin Bowen

Inside Linebackers (2)
STARTER: Paul Posluszny
BACKUP: John DiGiorgio

Cornerbacks (5)
STARTERS: Terrence McGee, Leodis McKelvin
BACKUPS: Drayton Florence, Ashton Youboty, Reggie Corner

Safeties (5)
STARTERS: Donte Whitner, Bryan Scott
BACKUPS: Jairus Byrd*, George Wilson, John Wendling

Specialists (3)
Rian Lindell, Brian Moorman, Ryan Neill

Practice Squad (8)
RB Xavier Omon, WR C.J. Hawthorne, TE Jonathan Stupar, OT Joel Bell, OG Brandon Rodd, DT Ventrell Jenkins*, CB Cary Harris*, CB Ellis Lankster*

Notable "Cuts"
WR Justin Jenkins, OT Jonathan Scott, DE Copeland Bryan, DT Corey Mace, LB Blake Costanzo, LB Jon Corto, CB Dustin Fox, FS Ko Simpson

I feel quite certain that if this projection is universally accepted, Earth will explode - or something like that.  So if you've got a point of contention or would like to offer up an alternative look at things, the comments section is available.  Go!

Are freaking crazy???!!!???!!!

Just kidding. Thought I would get that out of the way.
I really have no issue with any of this, with the lone exception being Blake Costanzo’s departure. The guy is a demon on special teams and I would hate to see him go. Not saying it won’t happen, just that he is the only guy on your cut list that I would really miss.

I was thinking the same thing about Corto, but I can’t exactly find a place for him on the roster.

by thefourwinds on May 18, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The only way either make it is ahead of Pat Thomas.

And I really don’t know one way or ther other if that will happen. It could also happen if Roscoe is traded but even then Jenkins would probably get a look before either of them.

Speaking of Pat Thomas, anyone else surprised that he’s the starter?

I am surprised Brian has him ahead of Ellison.

But only because Ellison is the incumbent.

Entirely agree on Costanzo. I know that a few of our LB’s will be cut before the start of the year, but I really hope that ne makes it on the final roster. He’s a beast.

Not to agree with you or anything...

But I think that barring a free agent signing or an injury this is 100% accurate.

LOVE IT

I, like you, beleive Ellison one way or another will not have a starting spot this year. You picked Thomas, I went with Bowen.

Other than that I agree with you 100%. But If you were to “gamble” somewhere other than at OLB. What other moves MIGHT surprise people. Interested in your thoughts.

I picked Kelsay and Parrish not making the roster (trade, release, etc.)

How can you pick Bowen?

I don’t even think he is a lock to make the roster. He has never played a single snap in the NFL. Plus he had major knee surgery. We have no idea how he was before the injury and you’re already handing the starting spot to him after it? Doesn’t make a whole lot of sense.

I said Bowen could easily surprise us.

But he could also easily not make the roster. I want to see him play some preseason snaps. Yeah he could beat out Thomas for a spot and/or start but he hasn’t done anything that leads me to put him ahead of anyone at this point. By talking up I have been saying he could make the roster ahead of Thomas. I never said he would come in and start. I have been talking down expectations of Nelson, Maybin, etc. Bowen is no more a sure thing than those guys so I wouldn’t talk him up like he is the next coming of Talley. :-)

nickle and dime

Who do you thinkg the nickle and dime CB’s are? I kind of think Florence, nickle and corner, dime that way Youboty can spell the starters as needed. I think Youboty is a better man-to-man cover guy against the larger wideout.s

yeah i could see it working out that way...but...

i think if youboty can prove himself once again he will be in the nickel, he did pretty well in that role last year at the start of the season.. and even had some nice blitzing abilitly coming out of that spot.. i think if youboty returns to form it will be his spot.. w/ him still being able to spell guys on the outside and we wouldn’t be loosing much bring in florence and corner for the nickel and dime spots if youbtoy is spelling mckevlin or mcgee

Corner should be the distant 5th CB. I don’t think he’s even close to the other 4 CB’s….

Agreed. Florence is an excellent nickle back, and Youboty showed the ability to start last year. Youboty should be kept as a reserve CB to give the starters an occasional break. That might work out very well for us too.

that picture

of T.O. at the airport if freakn hilarious….I love how at age 36 this guy still draws a crowd and is an entitiy in his own right. I just cannot understand or believe why and how the media love this guy so much. But anyway, I’m just glad he is here, and more importantly I’m glad this team is together, (no Jason Peters holdout to talk about), and now the march towards the 2009 playoffs can begin in earnest. Well, we’re not keeping six safeties, and Wilson has been just as productive in the lineup as Simpson has. I obviously don’t think that Simpson is a lock to be cut, but he’s definitely got an uphill climb with Byrd in town.

very good projected roster

I think Brian has pretty much nailed it. It does seem to me that Levitre is more of a question mark as a starter in ‘09 than most people think — it may become clear in OTA’s and TC that he needs a year in the conditioning program adding lower-body strength before he will be ready. I’ll be surprised if Corey McIntyre makes the roster, especially after his brush with the law in Florida. I won’t be surprised if the Bills keep one more OLB for ST purposes. Bobby April has a lot of clout that way. And one other guy who no one is mentioning but who has at least an outside chance of making the roster is Felton Higgins. He has made major progress in terms of getting stronger over the last two years, has truly blazing speed, and has become a much better route runner. His chances of sticking around would go up significantly if Parrish gets traded (especially because he could be used as a punt returner).

Apparantly Thomas is great on special teams, so he may spell the end of Corto and Costanzo even if he doesn’t start. And with Maybin aboard theres not much reason to keep Bryan anymore.

by CanadianBillsFan on May 19, 2009 3:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

NICE JOB but.....

i don’t think that the Bills spent that much money on Maybin unless they knew he was going to be a starter.

by t.o. fan on May 18, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

definately NOT the case – he needs to bulk up and give us more in the run game.

Barring injury – ‘im about 100% sure he’s not the starter – but he will probably play 15 snaps a game. Needs to be more well rounded.

Basically he’s raw with a ton of ability – but he needs some growth

He hasn’t signed a contract yet, and he probably won’t until late July.

Don’t forget that one does not need to “start” to see significant playing time… just ask Fred Jackson, Josh Reed or Spencer Johnson.

They drafted McKelvin last year and had no problem easing him into a role.

by kaisertown on May 18, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Close but not sure...

Still think that Levitre will be a backup to start the season with Chambers at LG – but thats only becuase of Chambers experience and Levitre’s lack of experience. Basically – coaches thinking starting 2 rookies might be a little much and go the safe route – which they usually do

Also – disagree on Scott starting at S. I think you will see Byrd there because DJ has flown with 2 rooks at the S positions and Byrd should be smart enough and have the ability enough to start come day one. If not start – should see significant playing time in passing situations.

also think Omon, Stupar get cut with Jenkins and Bryan staying

I don’t disagree with any of those….wow

I’d rather not keep a guy like Hamdan if we could keep a 9th OL or another player elsewhere who could help us, but whatever. We know the Bills/Trent heart Hammy.

I wish we could get a replacement for the Creepy Masturbating FB. He flat out stinks. I have no problem cutting him and keeping 4 TE’s, and rotating Schouman and maybe Stupar at FB if necessary. How’s your Omon to FB thought looking? Probably not happening.

This exercise shows how bad the bottom of our roster is. There’s very little competition for backup roles at many positions. Yuck.

Why do we NEED a 3rd stringer? Just to have one? If you want to say because Edwards is injury prone and Fitzpatrick kind of sucks, then that’s fine, I can agree with that. I just don’t think Hamdan is worth hanging on to just to hand on to. It’s not like he wouldn’t be available to re-sign in October or November if we needed him….

How is Fitzpatrick any less capable than other teams backups? He should be at a point now where he knows he’s always going to be a backup, and has come to terms. That is worth its weight in gold. I’m sure he can perform in our offense for a game or two here and there when necessary. The Bengals he played for last year weren’t the Bengals of a couple years ago, and the Rams were in a roster meltdown when he started for them. Hopefully he doesn’t need to start, but he is exactly what the Buffalo Bills need in a backup.

Would you rather have a Brian Griese type or something like that? The Bills were looking for an Edwards clone and found one, albeit one with a rockier history.

by syrbillsfan on May 18, 2009 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i’m not sure he’s exactly what we need in a back up. i agree with the fact he seems to accept the fact he is a back up. that said, he will be helpful when it comes to supporting edwards. but to be fair, i suppose, i should give him a shot before being critical of him without even having seen him perform in a bills uniform. but i saw plenty of him with the bengals last year. i like the fact he is mobile, but not much besides that in terms of his playing ability. again, there aren’t that many qb’s out there so i can’t say much about his signing. he’s an upgrade over losman, simply because he understands his role.

by chaucer on May 19, 2009 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I did some digging on his college stats and he was above average, not great. He’s got the right physical features and a good head. I think his play improved last year as the year went on. He should be fine, that being said, I hope he never comes off the bench :)

Yup, I’m with you guys there. Didn’t Schonert (or someone on the O) say that they were going to be phasing out the fullback? The whole brush with the law thing looks pretty sketchy (meaning, I’m more than willing to believe the lady ID’d him incorrectly, based on the police report). But based on the quality of play last year, and how little the Bills effectively use the FB position, I could see keeping Corto or Costanzo over McIntyre.

OL vs S

I like having 9 OL and 4 Safeties on a team — so, if you keep 5 Safeties, that 5th better be a great special teamer. I am not a big fan of Wendling nor of Wilson. I guess our individual OL players have great interchangeability/flexibility this year, though to allow us to have an extra S or LB.

So if the Bills signed Tinoisamoa, who would be dropped from this list?

by Krenn on May 18, 2009 1:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Maybe Pat Thomas.

Almost assuredly. I’d definitely be dropping Thomas, because the special teams potential of the Ellison/Nic Harris/Bowen trio is pretty substantial.

But wasn't Thomas a guy who contributed to the KC specialt teams?

Correct me if I’m wrong but most of his tackles were on special teams. Thomas is probably the odd man out but because he has reached his potential where the others have not.

This seems like a very sensible, good on paper roster.

I think Corto makes the practice squad if he is eligible.
And I think Alvin Bowen beats out Pat Thomas and Keith Ellison eventually. Maybe not in training camp.

Corto is not PS eligible.

Now that I looked at BG’s best guess again, let me offer up some more comments…

I don’t think Chris Ellis is a lock to make the team.

I’m in agreement about letting Hamdan go.

How will the new “no wedge” rule affect the roster?

McCargo has absolutely no competition. Of all people, he might be the one that needs it the most.

If Hardy is not capable playing a regular season game right away, is there a way he can be put on an IR list but still come back during the mid season. I know there is something there; I just forget how it works.

I think Roscoe is on the roster, somewhat to my chagrin.

The PUP list….He can be placed on that early in preseason camp, but he can’t practice. If he practices once, he’s ineligible for it. If he’s not ready to play/practice come the start of camp, they should put him on it and let him continue rehabbing until week 6 when he’s eligible to come off it.

Thanks. I couldn’t remember how that worked. And for the record, I’d be in complete agreement with that route for him.

how can you say he has no competition when he isn't in the starting line-up.. he is currently 4 out of 4 on the depth chart..

now i know what you mean as far as for a roster spot…but he has stroud, williams, and johnson all sitting in front of him that should be enough to push him to hopefully at least make him want to compete w/ those guys to get some playing time, and if it doesn’t then i don’t want him on this team anyway….give me corey mace or ventrell jenkins to take his roster spot..

but from the sounds of it he is refocused and doing some things in order to get on the field. so as of right now he has showed some signs of improving his work ethic if nothing.. i just hope it translates to getting opportunities and taking advantage of them.

I still think McCargo is a huge Wild Card, with the potential to do either absolutely nothing or finally become a best (or even just a solid contributor).

Unfortunately, he really doesn’t have anyone waiting in the wings to take his spot.

But who knows, maybe McCargo is the kind of player who plays better if he doesn’t have someone breathing down his neck to take away his spot.

i know what you mean.. alls i can make of it is that apparently the coaching staff isn't ready to give up on him..

maybe they feel he is finally getting it and turning the corner w/ the extra time he has put in.. boy i hope so.. or they simply feel pretty good about their dt’s as a whole.. but yeah it is one of the main positions where there isn’t much competition past our top 4 guys..

According to the Bears special teams coach (Dave Toub), no wedge means fewer D-lineman / O-lineman on blocking teams and more linebackers/fullbacks.
See Vic Carucci’s article for more; mostly from Toub and Bobby April.

So using Ellison/Bowen/Harris all on special teams makes sense… From this article, I wouldn’t be surprised to see a bunch of penalties on kickoffs in the preseason while teams experiment with various formations to see what’s legal and effective.

Thanks for this. I thought that was the case, but wasn’t sure. I’d imagine this will have an affect on what the roster will look like.

Chris Ellis is a lock to make this team.

They can’t give up on him now.

Hardy can be placed on the PUP list and come back after 6 weeks. He won’t count as a roster spot. It could make sense if the roster limit is close and they want to keep someone. But everything we have heard has said Hardy will be 100% by the regular season.

Agreed, Ellis and Hardy last at least this year

If they can pull a Duke Preston, pending production they might stick on as “developmental prospects” for as many as four years.

by Dyl on May 18, 2009 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no one gives up on high picks after only a year or 2...i think if they both stick this year.. which i believe they will.. then they definately stick next year..

especially hardy because i’m willing to be TO only spends one year hear.. and we need hardy next year.. also ellis because kelsay or denney’s time is about up.. and schobel isn’t getting any younger.. unless they have completely meltdowns they will be on this team.. no one gives up on 2 and 3rd round picks after only a year or 2.. come on.. look how long mcargo has stuck around and produced relatively nothing..

Except the Raiders...

they have been known to cut high draft picks. I think it was a third rounder they got rid of a year or two ago.

please don't compare us to the raiders..haha..

and now that i have thought about it.. the year the PATS drafted the safety meriwhether in the 1st round.. he was the ONLY rookie draft pick they kept that year..

so i guess only the really really bad teams or the really really good teams get rid of high picks.. and we are neither at this point, and i don’t tihnk we have the talent on our roster to let someone go after such a short stint, especially when you look at the age of DE’s and our WR corp won’t be the same once TO leaves.
