Around SBN: Cal RB Jahvid Best Seriously Injured, Carted Off Field

Boston Herald reports the Pats are looking to nab Raiders DE Derrick Burgess for a future 2nd or 3rd round pick. I think we should get in there with the bidding. Sure he's 31 and sure he has been hurt recently and only registered 3.5 sacks in 10 games in 08 but...

In 2007 he registered 8 sacks in 14 games, in 2006 he got 11 sacks in 16 games and in 2005 he had 16 sacks in 16 games, starting 12 of them.

He claims he's healthy again. I think for a future 3rd he would be well worth it and with him Schobel, Maybin, and Kelsay/Denney we could have an incredible rotation which could squeeze the most production out of all of them. Any thoughts?

Worth consideration

but I think to call it an “incredible rotation” because of this addition would be a stretch, at best.

As much as I want Kelsay gone and a guy like Burgess in his place, I just don’t see how it’s feasible.

I doubt the team would want to give up a 2nd or 3rd round pick for him. That’s a lot for a 30 year old DE coming off an injury riddled year.

How effective is he against the run? I’ve always thought of him as a pass rusher and not much else. If he is competent in the run support department, and would be our starting LE, then his desirability goes up. I just don’t know if that’s his game though.

He’s a free agent after this season. Of course, any team trading for him could sign him to a long term deal, but that’s a major risk with his age and injuries. I definitely wouldn’t trade a 2nd/3rd for a 30 year old in the last year of his deal.

Isn’t he a RE? Has he played LE for more than a handful of snaps like last year? Would he push Schobel to the left side?

I doubt the Pats would be willing to give up that much for him. It just doesn’t make any sense considering all the question marks, as well as the need for them to convert him to LB.

If the price tag were lower, say 4th or 5th rounder, I’d be all over this deal. Plus, is he even really available!?!?

Agree with K

Also, the Pats have what, all 32 second round picks next year? It would be nothing for them to give up the earliest one they get.

great point sireric

I think that you answered K’s question about whether or not the Pats would be willing to give up a pick for him, well done, I didn’t even think about their stockade of picks.

I’ll try to answer a few more:

He seems pretty stout against the run, racking up 57 tackles, 51 of which were solo, in his 16 sack season. In addition, the following year he added 50 tackles, 43 solo, to his 11 sacks. I know thats not Schobel numbers but its still good enough. Of course during his two injury years that followed those numbers dipped below 40, so that goes back to risk of whether or not hes healthy again.

Burgess is not a RE and has been listed as a LE throughout his career with the Raiders.

Burgess has been the talk of trade rumors the whole off-season, with the Raiders dangling him as trade bait early on. While those talks have gone away I know that Raiders fans are debating releasing him out right (wouldn’t that be great!) so I do think he is available. Problem is, if Burgess is released I’m sure he wants to go to NE over Buffalo.

I’m not sure how much a deal would cost, I’m also not sure if the coaching staff or front office would have any interest in bringing him. I think they may be happy with Ellis, Maybin, Schobel, Kelsay, Denney and I don’t know how attractive another plus 30 DE would be. Still, I think it would be wise to inquire or at least find out if New England is starting out saying a 2nd or 3rd just to get talks going and talk the Raiders down to a 5th. Remember, they did steal Moss from them for nothing.

Which is why I’d be surprised if he was traded to NE for anything less than a 2nd. He’s not worth that high a pick but Al Davis may want revenge!

I thought I saw he has played RDE for most of his career, up until this past year where he split time on each side….Maybe not

Problem is, if Burgess is released I’m sure he wants to go to NE over Buffalo.

Unless he wants to play with his hand on the ground 100% of the time. If he wants to convert to OLB, then NE is the obvious choice….

No thanks

The team needs to get younger at the DE spot. Burgess – isn’t he sort of a ’tweener, too?

I don't want Burgess.

past his prime, injured, cost of the draft pick, last year of the contract… pick a reason.
