Does Mike Florio Hate The Bills?

I'm a ProFootballTalk.com junkie and hit the site several times per day. It's a great site in terms of one-stop shopping for all of the latest news/rumors. However, Mike Florio (the owner) seems to have several axes to grind when it comes to the Bills. Most obviously, he has lampooned the Bills for signing TO. But he has also taken shots at the front office and players such as Marshawn Lynch. (How the Ko Simpson's 'I'm worth millions' thing escaped his attention is beyond me.)

Today, Florio took a pot shot at John Clayton's recent stab at predicting possible Vick landing places. Clayton named the Rams, 49ers, Seahawks and Patriots as teams that might be interested in Vick. So, while shredding Clayton's 'logic' (the Patriots???) Florio trots out his own bit of nonsense. He suggests that the Bills are a leading contender to land Vick. Why?

1. He says Buffalo is in a win-now mode. Well, duh. How would Michael Vick help Buffalo win now or win later? The Bills, for better or worse, have settled on Trent Edwards as the franchise QB. The team even seemingly made a point of not bringing in a back-up who could challenge Edwards. So, Vick wouldn't play QB for Buffalo. The Bills have two top tier WRs and good depth at the position so Vick wouldn't play WR. RB? Sure Vick is fast but would anyone take Lynch off the field and replace him with Michael Vick? Vick wouldn't help Buffalo win now. Or later.

2. He points out Buffalo paid TO more than anyone else was offering. However, Florio neglects to mention that Buffalo had offered about the same money (only in a multi-year format) to Coles. $6ish million dollars is apparently the going rate for WRs not named Fitzgerald. Florio evidently believes that paying the going rate for a WR with on the field issues somehow equates to Buffalo signing a guy with hideous off field issues.

3. Florio revealed that Buffalo made a serious play for Jason Taylor. Taylor plays DE, a position of dire need for the Bills. Vick played QB, a position that will only be  a need when Edwards gets hurt. Also, while Taylor's pass rushing ability would mesh well with just about any defense, Vick's style of QB play clearly does not. Hell, Vicks' style of play didn't work out in a system tailor made for Vick--let alone the West Coast type offense Jauron favors.

4. Moving back to TO, Florio somehow believes that Bills' fans will embrace Vick just like TO. Hmmm....while TO is a selfish, selfish man, I don't think he's ever been accused of a brutal felony--let alone convicted after giving a full confession. It's one thing to give the benefit of a doubt to an arrogant guy who has been productive everywhere he's gone and quite another to give the benefit of the doubt to a convicted felon who was hit or miss when he was in his prime.

Poll
Do you sense an anti-Bills bias on PFT?
Yes. Florio takes a lot of pot shots at the Bills. Moreso than he does for teams that aren't Cincy.

No. Florio spreads it around fairly evenly. Except for Cincy.

In recent years the NFL has typically imposed punishments on players either before or after the justice system did what it was going to do. Vick will get some kind of suspension.

Just because he has "paid this debt" doesn't make what he did any less disgusting

We are not talking about a one time error in judgment. You are either the kind of person who can do those things or you’re not. Let him move on with his life somewhere else. Personally, I hope he never plays another down. Let him clean up dog sh!t at the local humane society for the rest of his life.

How is it that we put man on the moon before we figured out it would be a good idea to put wheels on luggage?

Still

I don’t want him on the Bills, but if guys like Ray Lewis, Jamal Lewis, and others get to start over, he should too. He’s lost more in money and endorsements and two years of his prime. Let’s not forget to factor that into the punishment he’s had. I feel pretty confident in saying that no NFL Player has lost more for something they did, and rightfully so. Plus, I think Goodell will have him on a short leash, which makes me feel OK about him getting a shot. Pacman Jones was playing again! Personally, I think he could be good for creating 5-7 touchdowns in year one with whatever team he signs for out of a variety of positions. That having been said, if the Bills haven’t had some PR nightmares this offseason, maybe they could try it and not look like the Bengals, but this would be a little much. Also, I want to be able to root for players on the Bills, and I don’t think I could do that with him….Lynch is getting close to that already.

I do not totally agree with you...

While I do think Mike Florio has been taking quite a few shots at us, I do think the way this team has been run the last 8-9 years has made us an easy target. With all the mistakes made over those years, I actually understand why we are the butt of many of the national experts jokes. However, I do feel that we have had our best offseason in that time period. It is going to take some on field success before we get respect. The old phrase respect is earned, not given bodes true. My personal opinion, I think we are going to have a great year and make the playoffs. I think we will no longer be the target of all of the negative criticism that is unwarranted.

I'm not a Florio fan...

and I have ripped him on this space before. I did praise his article posted earlier Wednesday about a rookie wage scale, (see this fanshot posted by MRW) but on the whole his work does not impress me. I am fond of calling his website “ProFootballGuess.com” due to the constant conjecture which it spews. (John Henderson to the Bills? Roscoe Parrish to a Steelers team with no cap room?) People on these boards have called me out saying he has “good sources” and is “often right”. To that I say: “even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while”. With all that being said, I don’t think the Florio is wrong about the Bills any more often than he is wrong about other teams.

Give me John Clayton any day, Mike Florio is not fit to carry Clayton’s laptop.

I'll donate $1 to help Mary Wilson pay the estate tax...who's with me?!?

I posted this on a recent Fanshot about Vick and I'll repeat it here.

Florio has been decisively anti-Bill ever since TO signed with us (just look at all of his articles/rants against TO that have come out in the last months). And apparantly he also thinks that OBD doesn’t know what they are doing when moving Walker to LT, explaining all the "Bills are interested in Levi Jones" articles. I’m guessing that he now thinks that Trent isn’t a good enough QB and that because we chose to take a chance on Owens (which almost everyone but him agrees is a good move), that we should also take a chance on Vick.

It just goes to show that he doesn’t look past the surface when it comes to the Bills. And most of his opinion pieces on the team show a deffinitive biased against us IMO. Maybe it’s because of TO, maybe he’s just a Pats fan, I don’t know. But he deffinatly does not look at our team with an unbiased point of view.

by CanadianBillsFan on May 21, 2009 12:03 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Honestly, who gives a crap? Florio is nothing more than a rumormonger and pot stirrer. Sure, it’s nice when he provides info that isn’t available anywhere else, but the second he starts giving his opinion is when he loses me. He’s going to do anything to stir up some controversy and increase readership, and I don’t blame him for that. Whether he hates the Bills or not is irrelevant in the grand scheme of his, so why should we care?

I agree with this part.

I think I have said almost that same statement before.

Florio is a simple hack. why does anyone care what he says?

by dzil on May 21, 2009 8:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really don't

see what the big deal is? This is what Florio does…speculates….and just like most “analysts” he is wrong more than he is right. Florio doesn’t just “stir” the pot, he’s well connected in NFL circles and while it seems most people get agitated by him, I really could care less cuz the information and juicy nuggets he offers are well worth multiple daily stops over at his website. I would say

1) Vick won’t play QB anywhere he goes. He is perfect for running certain packages, playing a “slash” role and he would welcome that cuz he has no choice. No one is asking him to replace TE

2) Yeah the Bills paid T.O. fair market value. But T.O. is a known side show circus and he is 35. Who else would have done that? We’ll never know. But the Bills took on RISK in bringing in T.O. and when some rube posted a “should we go after T.O.” fanpost 99% of us “credible” bloggers said “no way, the Bills would never do that.” So it opens up the door at least a 0.001% chance on Michael Vick

3) You truly don’t believe using Vick as a subpackage guy running a wildcat or as a “slash” type player wouldn’t help an offense? Sure if asked to be a pocket passer for 60 mins of an NFL game he will struggle, but to use his best asset, his legs, and occassionally use that cannon of an arm, you truly don’t think that would help an NFL franchise? I strongly disagree

4. This is where I agree. Bills face may not embrace Vick, and that is where the decision I believe is made easy. Having Vick and T.O. would be such a side show circus that it would distract from Edwards development and from the product on the field. The sum has to be greater than its parts. That’s hard enough with T.O., it would be nearly impossible with Vick AND T.O.

Florio is doing his job. It’s complete reasonable speculation IMO. But that’s all it is….speculation

To stay on point with this topic…

Mike Vick was an average QB two years ago. He was always a dynamic player and was fun to watch. After two years away from the game he will be less than average at the position. Who on our roster would he be an improvement over? Whose job would he take? T.O. was a huge upgrade for us. Vick wouldn’t be so unless he is gonna play linebacker or russ the passer, I will pass on Vick.

As for Florio, his contacts around the league are second to none. He said T.O. was coming here before any other national media did. He is great with that stuff. His opinions are generaelly just to get attention. Is he credible? Yes. Is he any worse than most other guys? Not really but he does mock and use curse words more than most national guys.

to

stay on point, no one is saying he would play QB. He would be a 10-15 plays a game guy, pay him near the league minimum, he is unquestionably one of the top athletes of the last decade, and with the ball in his hands he flat out makes plays. He could run the wild cat, play WR, RB, split end, run the option. He has 4.3 speed and a cannon for an arm. If anyone thinks that wouldn’t help a football team, I just cannot agree with that. Sure he is not in football shape but this guy has no choice in his life right now. He has to do everything perfect or risk going back into society being a nobody….he has to train the hardest he ever has, he has SO MUCH to prove. I’m not saying he should sign with the Bills, but he should and will get a second chance. He may go to terrible team and he will just fizzle out….but Michael Vick is a once a decade talent. That is undeniable

He would be a 10-15 plays a game guy

But who on this roster would he supplant? Would he get carries in the backfield ahad of Marshawn and Freddy and Dominic? Would he get catches ahead of TO, Evans, Reed, Hardy, Johnson, or Roscoe? Where would he play here?

i would

gladly have him take snaps from freddy, dominic and marshawn. Vick offers a dynamic they can’t….break away speed.

He used to offer that.

Can he still? He has been out of conditioning programs for two years.

Even more than the conditioning, he’s been out of a nutrition program for a couple of years. That prison food has to be great for your figure.

by syrbillsfan on May 22, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that's the big question

the most dangerous thing about vick was his legs not his arm. what kind of speed will he have now? we’ll probably find out soon enough. i’m sure as soon as any suspension that may be imposed is up, he will be on some teams roster .

by ncfinfan on May 25, 2009 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Florio doesn’t hate the Bills. This is just the price you pay for signing TO. If a team in a similiar position had signed TO, then Florio would be treating them just like he treats Buffalo.

Well, that fixed that – sorry, folks, but I had to delete roughly 80% of the comments on this thread. Quite frankly, I don’t have the time to sit here and nit-pick the entire thread to try to keep discussions in line. I appreciate the folks who tried to keep the Vick topic related to Vick, and am not holding it against anyone that the discussion devolved into ethical and religious topics. Those do not belong here.

Carry on…

agreed

there are certain issues that people will never agree on…we all know what those issues are and this is apparently another one to add to the list. A debate where pot shots and unpleasantries are avoided would be welcome but that isn’t possible in the comfort of the online blogosphere.

I must have missed the pot shots. I vaguely remember responding to someone’s post (stating Vick had a right to play in the NFL) but I don’t recall either my reply or the post going after anyone. Maybe the name calling came later?

by Ron From NM on May 21, 2009 6:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No name calling that I saw (although I didn’t see all of it). Just a topic that got into questions that, although they relate to Vick, don’t directly relate to football.

And now he says that the Bills signing TO was the 6th best move of the offseason….
