Tom Brady & Trent Edwards Comparison
Yeah Yeah...I am actually doing this even though you really shouldn't be able to draw conclusions at the point...ah well.
First off, I will start by saying that I am not a fan of Mr. Brady at all. Perhaps it is due to the fact he is on that PATS team I despise so very much. Or maybe it is because I think he is a little over rated (The PATS back-up won 11 games last year - are you serious). That team has excellent coaching, and I think if he was on any other team he would turd out, like you will see from Cassel this year. Regardless of those feelings he does perform like a machine and works extremely well in Belli's system which makes him viewed by many as one of the best QB's in the league.
Second note that one must keep in mind regarding Brady and his years with the PATS...as a team...they have had far more talent and better coaching than the Bills since Brady's arrival.
Now...lets take a look at those numbers; starting with Tommy Bean Town's first full year.
The PATS went 11-5 during the regular season and on to win the super bowl this year...as you all are well aware.
Moving on; lets have a look at Trent E-Dizzle's figures in his first full year.
The Bill's of course had a 7-9 season and didn't make it to the post season. Although they had quite a bit of talent, we are well aware there were a multitude of positions that were lacking.
When comparing the two players, I think the numbers look pretty good. Obviously, there is a lack of touchdowns in the passing game; he did have 3 rushing though to bring the total to 14. Which is one really good game away from matching Brady. Keep in mind Trent hardly played in the Arizona game last year, and he already only appeared in 14 games compared to Brady's total in 2001 of 15 games.
The Bottom Line:
As many of you have stated; this is a no excuses season for Trent. and providing he doesn't get hurt it will be a BIG season; with him more than doubling his TD production. He has the targets and he does have the skills to make in the NFL. Now, lets hope for some better play calling and a nice healthy season. I want a "Tom Brady" of our own. Minus the toolishness of course.

The stat comparisons are really interesting.
It’s pretty amazing how similar the numbers are.

I would probably wager more than $5
Have you heard Brady talk in an interview…they guy is Mark Kelso from “That 70’s Show.” He has some extra space between those ears.

Well Brady does have game smarts. But any other kind of smarts… um…

the only
thing Tom Brady and Trent Edwards have in common is they both play in the AFC East…other than that Trent couldn’t carry Brady’s jock.

Well, there are a few things to consider here. Brady’s 2001 season with the Pats was the season that he was promoted from backup to starter in week 2 (poor Drew Bledsoe and his internal bleeding), unlike Trent in 2008, who spent all offseason getting first team reps. Brady had hardly thrown a pass in the NFL while Edwards attempted 269 passes in 10 games in his first season. A better comparison is probably Trent’s rookie year to Brady’s second season or Trent’s 2nd season to Brady’s 3rd season (where Brady lead the league with 28 TDs).
Brady’s WRs at the time were Troy Brown and David Patten with Jermain Wiggins leading the TEs with 14 catches and Antowain Smith running the ball. While Trent’s weapons weren’t all that good last year, Brady’s weren’t any better. It’s also worth noting that while the Pats did go 11-5 that year, they went 11-3 with Brady as the starter and his 18 TDs that season (in 413 attempts) matches Trent’s career (643 attempts).

CHEATERS!
That was also during a period when Brady was having what the defense was doing radioed directly into his helmet. Don’t forget that when Spygate was finally made public that members of the Rams said there were Patsies assistants watching their walkthroughs. I’m willing to bet that Trent could put up astronomical stats if there was a voice in his ear telling him what the defense was going to do before the ball was even snapped.

That's not exactly true...
The radio signal to Brady’s helmet is cut off with 15 left on the play clock. How many times are defenses lined up definitively before that 15 second mark?

give edwards some time
we gotta give this guy some time to develop. he has a great foundation to build upon it seems, unlike a guy like losman who you could tell had a 10cent head.

Coaching Matters!
BiliCheat coaches to the strengths (and weaknesses) of his roster (and the oppenent’s tendencies) better than any other coach as far as I can tell. He took an average team in 2001, with a new starting QB to a SuperBowl championship and if you didn’t believe it then, they won several more in the next few years.
Notice the evolution of Brady’s game over 2001-2007 as he consistently (1) gained more game experience, (2) got above average talent around him. The play calling last year for Cassel was eerily similiar to Brady in those first couple of seasons but as he progressed and the talent around him increased, he solidfied himself as a premier NFL QB. Remeber the 2007 season – that was scary!
Nothing against Brady (I can’t argue with 3 SB rings), but something tells me the same level of coaching, Trent would be no-brainer starter in this league. He’s got intelligence and sufficient physical tools (arm strength could be better, but he’s generally accurate) to be successful and now he’s going to have more weapons at his disposal. But i’m hoping that that with another year under his belt, an improvement in game calling from Turk (it’s his second year too), Trent can put the pieces together to consistently produce on game day.
To me, this will be a successful season if we know without a doubt that Trent is the Franchise QB that we’ve needed since the K-Gun was locked and loaded. That will mean we are in playoff contention and can maybe end this horrible drought.

This is all conjecture
Trent’s numbers aren’t that bad, and Brady’s are pretty good. Brady was sacked alot…but hey, overall, it is interesting, but I don’t want to be comparing Trent to Hall of famers just yet, even though we are probably all guilty of that.

Lookin at that old article
If Trent plays in the games he missed in 08, he would have been on track for soem of those stats, at least the average ones, and those that are better, aren’t much better in that
The Bills CAN win any game

I wonder why over half of Trent’s fumbles were lost, while only 25% of Brady’s were?
Could be a couple factors – more of Trent’s fumbles could have been on roll-outs, where there are fewer of his own players than in the pocket. Might be that the Bills linemen aren’t as alert to stray balls as the Patriots O-line is. Or it could be Edwards; he only has two fumble recoveries in his career, which is surprisingly low for a QB. He should take some lessons from Fitzpatrick, who led the NFL last year in fumble recoveries (EIGHT!)

THat is not really something I want him to focus on too much.
Let’s focus on avoiding it! :-)

Whether or not a fumble is recovered is mostly out of Trent’s hands. Fitzpatrick led the league in his fumbles being recovered. That doesn’t mean he recovered them. That just means the Bengals around him were extremely prepared for him him to fumble.

First off, I will start by saying that I am not a fan of Mr. Brady at all.
I love this from a fanbase – I get it – but I can’t help but like to watch how that team plays football. They are good – better than watching the crap fest we call Bills football over the last decade. call me whatever – but there comes a point when I just want to watch good fundamental football instead of the crappy product Buffalo puts out each and every year.
I get the comparison idea – but the difference is in the playmaking ability – they do similar numbers as you point out – but go the route that kaisertown said – probably a little more accurate.
Personally I don’t think there’s any comparison – Brady wins this in a landslide until Edwards proves other wise. Its not an exercise in futility – but comparing the two then expectign anything similiar to the 3 super bowls that Brady has isn’t a great avenue for future hopefulness.
regardless – good article – i enjoyed the read – just not going to be thinking that Edwards is going to get us 3 rings – unless of course he does.

I agree on a few points.
There is no denying they play excellent football. They why they run there offense and adjust to their defense in the second half of games is phenomenal. I am usually in awe when I do watch….thinking to myself…they make it look easy…why do the Bills suck so hard.
I do see where I am flawed and I am not saying Trent is the next Tom Brady…I’m just saying he isn’t far off were Brady was at the begining and I see the potential for him to improve. In regards to the comparasion and kaisers idea…I don’t think it can be done that way either. Brady did have a year in the PATS system before he took the reins. Even though he went straight from the back-up to the starter role…he had seen the playbook the entire year before that….played in two years of preseason (yeah I know its just preseason)….and got to watch a great quarterback in work. Who was Trents “mentor” JP Loserman? It was also his rookie season and he didn’t see that many touches in preseason.
Again, I just thought it was a neat idea to show were the two were in their first full years at QB. As a fan I have to hope for those 3 rings…or more. If I didn’t…I wouldn’t still be a fan after seeing what they have gone through since the mid 80’s.

oh no – it was a good idea.
Its just almost impossible to predict how good a QB is going to be. Its a very tough position and the best in college fail.
Just some constructive critisim is all – :)

We get that.
But it’s worthwhile to say “see what Brady did when he was like Trent”. It’s a way to look at potential.

And by comparing the both we can see that while Edwards will never be Tom Brady, he has the potential to be an excellent QB. That’s the important part.

sorry about that
that was one of my friends that got on the computer while i was cooking on the grill. i think that trent has the potential to be a pretty good qb in this league. again, sorry about my friend being a jerk.
