After getting an e-mail from BB.Com that the Sporting News' team of former NFL scouts had compiled a list of the top 20 NFL safeties and that Donte Whitner hit number 9, I had to check out the list for myself. Whitner is ranked one slot ahead of Kerry Rhodes and five ahead of Sean Jones, a free agent many us wanted to sign. He's also ahead of Atogwe, another popular name around here, LaRon Landry and Brandon Meriweather.

9. Donte Whitner, Bills. Pending legal issues aside, Whitner is an instinctive playmaker who can play in traffic or in space. He is a rising young player who has a physical style and is strong in run support.

So these so called former scouts haven’t seen much of Whitner then, eh?

it seems like

outside the Bills fanbase (or this site rather) Donte is a consensus stud. Personally, I think he’s somewhere inbetween. I don’t think hes as bad as some here make him out to be (although Brian’s analysis of his lack of turnovers is troubling) but I think in a twisted turn of fate, the national media finally recognizes a Bill as one of the leagues best and it actually isnt one of them. Eric Moulds never got enough credit, McGee, Crowell. Finally a player does and hes a guy the fans here think is on the hot seat. Amazing….

Guards Brad Butler and Brandon Rodd are decent. - Pete Prisco
Brandon Rodd!! Our best player.

The most shocking thing about this list is that Roy Williams is on it.

And how is Gibril WIlson not on this list? This guy actually thinks that Roy Williams is better than Gibril Wilson? I’m surprised that Reggie Nelson and Bernard Pollard aren’t on it either.

Some other little thoughts: I think Ken Hamlin is overrated and it’s good to see him out of the top 10. OJ Otogwe is at least twice as overrated as Hamlin is. For every INT that he comes up with, he gives up three deep passes. He’s a risk taker that I wouldn’t even want on my team. I have a hard time believing that Darren Sharper, while still a viable starter, is one of the 20 best safeties in the league. And it’s good to see SU grad Tanard Jackson on the list. He really deserves it.

I do think Whitner gets underrated by the hardcore Bills fans and overrated by the national media and the funny thing is that it’s for the same reason. Bills fans expect more out of him because he was a top 10 pick, while the rest of the country assumes he is really good because he was a top 10 pick. Whitner is good in run support (average for a SS and great for a FS) and decent in coverage (average for a SS and mediocre for a FS). So I guess that means I think Whitner is an average starting SS. He’d be a fringy top 20 guy if I were making this list. He’s certainly better than Roy Williams and I think he’s just as good as the Quentin Mikell’s of the world, but I don’t think he’s any better than the Yeremiah Bell’s of the league either.
