Free agent LB Tinoisamoa signs with Bears

Free agent linebacker Pisa Tinoisamoa - who visited with the Buffalo Bills in mid-May - signed with the Chicago Bears today.

Tinoisamoa agreed to a 1-year contract and is expected to play on first and second downs for Chicago's defense.

It's too bad he didn't want to become a part of what looks to be an exciting year in Orchard Park.  Instead, he'll be overshadowed by Brian Urlacher and Lance Briggs.  Of course, if that is the kind of player he is - that he wants to ride on their laurels - well, we don't need him in Buffalo.  We need a playmaker... not a sideshow LB.

Buffalo will now hold an open competition for the starting SAM linebacker role between incumbent Keith Ellison, free agent signee Pat Thomas, and possibly rookie Nic Harris.

I don’t know if I’d say the Bills are “better off” without Tinoisamoa – it’s not like signing him would make us worse – but I don’t view it as a huge loss, either, for a multitude of reasons. We’ll be fine.

I agree with you.

Not a big loss. Not a huge upgrade. An upgrade but not a huge upgrade.

We’ll be fine as long as Alvin Bowen or Pat Thomas is starting.

isn’t bowen an untested commodity still at this point? measurables don’t mean anywhere near as much as playing experience does.

He doesn’t even have great measurables either

I’d actually say they’re quite poor. I don’t know why Bowen’s name pops up as a potential starter, and I don’t just mean for this season. I’d bet he never starts a single game his entire career.

by kaisertown on May 30, 2009 2:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont' either

He’s small, not very fast, not very strong and coming off an ACL tear. I agree I’d be surprised if he ever starts a single game. I think there’s a better chance he gets cut than there is of him actually starting a game this season.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but weren’t there words coming out of OBD last year that Bowen was making a nice impression last year before he got hurt?

Is he 100% healthy this year?

There were words...

but he got hurt one day into training camp right? How much can they tell before that?

There are nice words coming out about Ellis Lankster this year….we can’t really expect him to be fighting for a starting spot. It’s all positives coming from workouts in shorts that we’re seeing with these guys. I don’t remember any specific stories written about Bowen; it was likely Chris Brown talking up draft picks’ play in practice….

i read that harris was getting reps ahead of bowen in camp.. harris is w/ the 2nd team and bowen is w/ the 3rd...

so unless there is a good reason for this other than his play, he better turn it up especially when camp comes if he wants to make the roster, let alone challenge for a starting spot.. i think this is a wide open competition.. harris/bowen/thomas all could either be the starter week one or not even make the team IMO

Bummer

Could have really used an upgrade at this position. Hopefully Bowen or Thomas show up big this year. It is evident that Ellison does not deserve to start. He is a great backup, but that is all.

I voted “no”, but not because I don’t think we’ll be fine at OLB. Of course we are a better team with Pisa T in the lineup. I also think that a handful of below average starters in the lineup doesn’t hurt as much as one superstar helps. If Buffalo can find/develop that top 10 defender than you can start a few Ellison’s and it will still be a playmaking defense.

I’m not sure how Tino is going to be overshadowed in Chicago. He will serve the exact same role there as he would of have in Buffalo. He’d still be the first LB to come off the field here. I can see how going to a defense with Urlacher and an existant pass rush, as well as a team with a national buzz and playoff aspirations with Cutler in town would be desirable. But I can also see how coming to Buffalo and playing behind a couple of good run stopping DTs and solid run defending DEs would have been the better move for him too.

by kaisertown on May 29, 2009 6:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agree with you kaisertown that Pisa could simply want to be part of one of the best overall LB corps in the NFL. That would be in Chicago, not Buffalo. Would have liked to have had him on the Bills, but such is life.

We're thicker at DB and are better against the run, so

I am confident that the Bills can scheme around the need to have 3 dynamic linebackers on the field at all times.

by Dyl on May 29, 2009 8:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Um, what are you talking about?

The Bears finished 5th in the NFL against the run last year. The Bills were 22nd.

Our run D is quite awful. I’d rather play for the Bears if this was the reasoning too.

im actually more upset about this than I thought I'd be

We lose out on a pretty big upgrade at a starting position to only one other competitor? I’m sorry but that makes my blood boil a little bit. The Bears just got Cutler so they have a season or two before the heat kicks in. Its now or never for most of the coaching staff and likely a good chunk of the players this season here in Buffalo and we act like getting Pisa isn’t a top priority. Well maybe it wasn’t to some at OBD and some of you but it darn should have been! Take a look at our team, if Ellison isn’t the weakest link on the whole squad then he definitely is on defense. Yes, including Chris Kelsay!

Butler and Walker can get the job done and if they don’t they still will be an upgrade over the line last year. The rest of the offense looks fine. The secondary is set and at least if Scott can’t do it a second rounder is waiting in the wings. This is just so friggin blah. He signed a one year deal so it couldn’t have been that much of a bidding war. Unless they have an ace up their sleeve like Derrick Brooks (yes, Derrick Brooks would be a significant upgrade over Ellison physically, mentally and spiritually for this defensive unit) I’m going to be fuming until we win a game or figure something else out. Yuck!

I probably am freaking out, and probably because I convinced myself it was a forgone conclusion we were going to get him but still, I hate the idea of losing a top notch player, and a really productive one, when we were bidding against only one team. I think I’m also a bit peeved that its Keith Ellison for another year.

I’ve been pretty much annoyed with OLB ever since my dreams of Crowell, Poz, and Mitchell were shattered by an untimely IR tag. Since then, the issue has seemingly refused to be resolved. No draft picks, no free agent pick ups, no trades, nothing.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like Ellison a lot but he has been starting for too long. I got my hopes up I guess…..

I hear you Poz… It just seems like we bring a lot of guys in here, but can’t seal the deal this year. He would have been a good upgrade over Ellison. Oh well, we move on… There still might be some FA’s released throughout training camps. Especially as some teams try to clear cap space to sign rookies.

Do you think, like Bryant “Panda” Johnson from last offseason, it was an issue of contract length? Bills offered him a long term deal, and Tinoisamoa didn’t want that. So he opts to play for the Bears, what he thought was the better team, so that it would push his price tag up next offseason, which is basically what Kwika Mitchell did with the Giants, before signing with the Bills on a longer contract.

The Bills CAN win any game

by killascript on May 30, 2009 12:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point man.

Maybe that is what happened. He wanted a one year contract because of when he was released. He thinks if he gets to play the market at the start of free agency instead of the end he’ll get more money. Not a bad strategy. It’s a little different than Panda but only in the timing.

The transaction reunites the former St. Louis Rams starter with Bears coach Lovie Smith and linebackers coach Bob Babich, who previously coached Tinoisamoa in St. Louis.

Perry Fewell was the DB coach when Lowive and Babich were there. But it was his D Coordinator and his position coach over a different position coach.

And we’ll have no way of knowing unless he comes out and says it.

I agree with poz

This guy would have started, unlike Florence or Rhodes, we should have spent that money on an instant upgrade that would have started. I like both Rhodes and Florence but I would have taken Pisa over both of them.

First of all...

Rhodes will be the number 2 RB for at least three weeks this year. He only cost 1.5M so it’s pretty good money for the Bills.

You can complain about Florence and part of me agrees with you. He’s gonna make like 3M this year to be our 4th CB? But we have the money to sign Pisa if we wanted to. Buffalo offered him a fair contract to be sure. They probably offered him a multi-year contract and he went with the one year and cash out plan. Can’t fault Bills brass for that.

How much of an actual impact can Rhodes make in three games as a second running back? Last time we played new England it seemed to me Jackson handled it himself and all we did that game was run, they new we were going to run and he still came up with decent yardage.

Pisa would make an impact all year and is young. I’m not so sure we have all that money to spend, have we settled on a contract yet for Maybin? And that extra gap of money we could have saved would make it a little easier to sign him

Don’t get me wrong I like both Rhodes and Florence signings but would prefer Pisa.

But what if Jackson gets hurt between now and the end of game 3? For just a mil more than it would cost to keep Omon or a few hundred K more than it would have been to get a crappy vet, I think Buffalo made the right call with Rhodes.

Florence is debatable. I would have gone a cheaper route there.

by kaisertown on May 30, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We have around 11M to spend right now to this year's cap.

The rookie pool, including Maybin’s contract, can only be $5.9M of that.

So when you take that rookie money away the Bills had 5M to sign any free agents. That most certainly would have sealed the deal on Pisa if they offered him all the money, something they most certainly did not.

Don’t go blaming Florence and Rhodes because of the Bills wanted Pisa badly enough they could have paid for him. Overall, I don’t think he was worth what he was probably asking for and neither did the Bills. They probably offered him a multi-year deal with a resaonable base salary and he turned it down for the one year deal where he gets to be a free agent again soon.

It would make a lot of sense for him to want to be a FA again next year (an uncapped year). If he plays well this year then he stands to really cash in next year.

And I too think that he was probably asking for more money then OBD was willing to give him. To me he’s not worth much more then 3M per year, but he probably thought otherwise.

by CanadianBillsFan on May 31, 2009 3:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You shouldn’t bring those guys into the equation. There’s still plenty of money available, so it’s not like we were trying to scrape together couch change to sign Pisa. Those guys didn’t hinder our ability to go after him and pay him.

I don't see how a vet like Derrick Brooks would be bad

At least bring him to camp, and even if for some reason he doesn’t beat out Ellison, which he probably would, he serves as a more than servicable player in a back up role, if and when Ellison goes down. I think the only strike against a player like Brooks, is that he might not be your 16 game starter (but could be, I don’t know his athletic health status) and he won’t contribute on special teams. That’s probably why he isn’t on our team

I supported unloading Peters, because of the friction he had created, plus he just looked bad last year. I acccepted the draft of Maybin instead of taking Oher, and then taking Woods instead of making a move. I have delt with the next year syndrom for far too many years. My first game was in the Rock Pile (Old War Memorial for you youngsters). I’m getting too old waiting. I really feel this could be the biggtest mistake this year. We were front runners and let it slip through our fingers. DJ will regret this big time.

Why do today, when it can wait til tomorrow; the games on!

Jauron probably has little to do with the signings other than to say he likes or doesn’t like the guy. I would calm down a little, this isn’t the biggest mistake this year. Who knows, he might never had the intention of signing here, just used the Bills to drive his price up. It wouldn’t be the first time.
