Suddenly Glad Buffalo Didn't Trade For Owen Daniels
I was one of several people who entered the offseason hoping that Buffalo would really address the TE position, either via free agency or early in the draft. Owen Daniels was the only free agent TE for Buffalo to consider as an immediate and significant upgrade. The Texans tendered Daniels too highly for the Bills to consider making him an offer. At the time I was disappointed, but now comes word that Daniels wants to be the highest paid TE in the league. Daniels was the pick of the 2009 TE free agency litter but what is it with these guys? Daniels isn't anywhere near the best TE in the league.
This reminds me so much of the Jason Peters situation (who also isn't the best in the league at his position) that I think I'd be physically ill if Daniels was a Bill right now. While only time will tell if the TE the Bills drafted (Nelson) will finally upgrade the position, in retrospect I'm delighted that the Bills never made a play for Daniels.
Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

Holy Crap!
I put in the link for the PFT story but the fanpost automatically put in 4 more links just by virtue of typing proper names!
Sorry….just had to marvel at technology for a moment.
Didn't you get the memo on the new Autolink feature?

Good thing for the Bills
I would like to say on that note, that when a player does not come to the Bills, or any team for that matter, there is sometimes reasons that they may realize that don’t surface til later.
Good foresight….
The Bills CAN win any game
What is it with these over inflated egos?
Seriously, someone needs to remind these guys that they are playing a sport for a living and getting obscene amounts of money for it as it is! I’d honestly be happy playing 1 season at the vet minimum in the NFL, I’d be set for life. Not as in never have to work again, but all major expences (house, cars, education) would be taken care of. These guys really need to wake the He** up.

LOL
Someone needs to remind him that Andre Johnson wears the big receiver’s pants for the Texans.

Then he should honor his contract, wait one more year and get out as a UFA next year.

I don’t think he’ll be a UFA next year if there is no salary cap. I think he’d be a RFA again since under the crazy no-cap rules (as I understand them) a player has to have 6 years of service to be a UFA….for some reason.

I believe he would actually be an ERFA next year. Under the current CBA, 6 years are needed for UFA and 5 for RFA. This would be just one example of the strange implications the current CBA would have on next (2010) season.
This is his fourth year....
so if next year is capped under a new CBA he will be an UFA.
Under the uncapped agreement he will be an ERFA in 2010 and a RFA in 2011 before becoming an UFA in 2012, assuming the owners don’t lockout the player or the union goes on strike.
Sucks to be him… or Shawn Merriman

If he wants out of Houston Daniels is going about it in a very strange way. You’ve got to figure he would have said something if he wanted a change of scenery in order to try to force Houston’s hand before/during the draft.
And why would he want out of Houston? Who wouldn’t want to play with Andre Johnson? Matt Schaub is a good QB who’s style fits Daniels and while Kevin Walter is solid, Daniels is the number two option in the pass attack. The only thing that might be frustrating Daniels is if he is asked to do a lot of blocking. They ran the ball a lot late in the season as Slaton emerged and maybe they really focused on running the ball in OTAs?
You can have all the production oppertunities in the world and still want out of a losing team; just look at Berry Sanders.

I wouldn’t call Houston a losing team though. They’ve been 8-8 for two straight seasons and have that great offense and a really young and improving defense. They are on track to be a great team sometime soon.
Yeah, but I think Daniels’ issue lies with how soon the team will be great. He may be trying to avoid wasting half his career while waiting for that to happen.

By that logic Peters should have said something too, but we all saw what happened. Lets face it Ron, some of these guys are idiots.

Daniels just might be....
the best TE in the league. He’s not an elite receiver or an elite blocker, but he does both things great… which might make him elite. He doesn’t put up eye-popping stats, but he plays for the Texans who have pretty inconsistent QB play. But they do have a solid running game in spite of an unremarkable OL. Imagine his production if he were on a team like Indy.
It’s very debatable, but Kellen Winslow, Antonio Gates, Gonzo, Chris Cooley, and Dallas Clark are all good receivers…. but they’re not complete TEs like Daniels. People think that because he plays for a somewhat obscure team and no one talks about how great he is, so therefore he is not the best TE around.
