Was Our 2009 Draft a Plan B Approach
Pre draft we focused on pass rush and a top tight end that would impact immediately with our offensive style. Then we traded Jason Peters to the eagles after cutting loose our right guard and centers. Signed a free agent Center from the Panthers which should prove to be a big positive. That brings us to a pass rush, impact tight end, left tackle and left guard. In hind - sight we can logically see what the thinking was at OBD but WHAT IF.
What if one of the first three OT were available at #11. What if Pettigrew were available at #28. Why did Nelson slip to the fourth Round after three other TE's were picked, (I believe three). Why Maybin and not Orakpo? I love our draft picks. For the first time in years I believe we hit the nail on the head with the first five picks. Picking up OL in two of the top four has got to be a first. I am beginning to think that Byrd was the only sure pick on the board when the second round started. All others were well if this guy is gone we will take this one. As much as I love these picks did we execute a plan B approach and select alot of projects that will straight line us for 2009 or should I continue to be excited about this season.

i know that they were high on woods and levitre, so you’d have to think that they were scoping out moving walker and butler before the draft. they got nelson because they couldn’t believe he dropped there. byrd was someone else they obviously had been thinking about earlier as well – so i don’t think that they didn’t want these guys. not with their first four picks probably starting on opening day.

Anyone know...
How Pettigrew has looked thus far? And yes, I know it’s WAY too early to get excited or disappointed about any of the players drafted/not drafted.

He's meshing with Stafford nicely.

I think every plan is at least a plan b.
There are so many players that drop or get picked earlier – trades. That’s just the nature of the draft.

Yeah, this. Every team in the NFL operates on Plan Bs, because nobody in this league is stupid enough to constantly field losing teams if they’re getting their Plan As.
I know for a fact that the Bills would have been happier had things gone a hair differently on draft day. That does not mean that they are not thrilled with what happened. With the Draft, there can’t really be a set “plan” – you just have to get the best players you can where you can get them.

I think with this kind of logic you can make it seem like every team that doesn’t have a top three pick is going with plan B. I would bet that Buffalo would have drafted one of the top three OTs, but they were all top 10 prospects or better and Buffalo had pick 11. Since it was almost a certainty that the top 3 OTs wouldn’t be there at 11, Buffalo had the option of trading up for one or drafting a different player. So you could make the argument that Buffalo decided the cost of moving up was too high and went with plan A in Aaron Maybin.
It’s possible that Eric Wood was the target at 28. It’s also possible that Pettigrew, Alex Mack, Clay Matthews and 20 something other guys were rated higher by Buffalo. I don’t really get the whole plan A vs. plan B thing after the first pick. You have to go with the flow of the draft and you can’t go into it with specific plans. Guys go earlier than expected and players fall entire rounds behind where you think they will be picked.

Agreed, and I am sure the Bills had a plan if Maybin would have gone before they picked.
Why does this quote remind me of what it is like to be a Bills fan?
" It is impossible for words….to describe…what is necessary to those who do not know what horror means. Horror….horror has a face….and you must make a friend of horror….horror and moral terror are your friends …..and if they are not, they are enemies to be feared". – Marlon Brando

They picked Maybin while Orakpo was on the board.
Sound to me like it was Plan A.

I thought A Smith was plan A, albeit a slightly unrealistic plan A.

Right...
I was referencing what the author wrote.
As Brain said, unless you’re picking in the first three picks you’re getting a plan B guy

Our first pick was as per the plan
I remain convinced that Pettigrew or Mack would have been our pick at #28 had they been there.

Maybin was the second DE off the board.
DeShawn Jackson was the first DE off the board, so pass rush help did give us the best opportunity to improve an area of need. Enter Aaron Maybin. Interior Offensive Lineman not touched until second half of round one, and not hit hard thus bringing in Wood and Levetri, two of the top four. Bringing in a playmaker in the secondary with Chung going to the Patsies, allows Byrd to step in at make geniusus out of OBD and finally Nelson, stretching the middle of the field with D. Fine just like Cutler and Schlefter. Putting emphasis on Walker and Butler. You know I voted plan B but this does have potential to turn quickly to an A plan. Can’t shake the pessimism but I do think Walker and Butler can hold up their ends of the deal.
