Take A Shot In The Dark

We've got quite a way to go before we get any real Bills news, barring (hopefully) yet another player arrest. So, why not take a pre-camp/pre-season shot at predicting the final 2009 record? I've listed the Bills' opponents as well as those teams' 2008 offensive and defensive ratings. My own prediction and rationalizations are below that.

2008           offensive ranking      defensive ranking

at Pats                   5                                          10

Bucs                      14                                          9

Saints                    1                                         23

at Dolphins          12                                        15

Browns                 31                                        26

at Jets                   16                                        16

at Panthers          10                                       18

Texans                   3                                        22

at Titans               21                                          7

at Jaguars           20                                         17

Dolphins              12                                        15

Jets (Toronto)     16                                        16

at Chiefs              24                                        31

Pats                         5                                       10

at Falcons             6                                         24

Colts                     15                                         11

Buffalo goes to Foxboro on Week 1 for a nationally televised beat down by the, as the less-than-evenhanded MNF is sure to describe it, heroically rejuvinated Tom Brady. No doubt we'll be treated to Whitner making an INT in a tiny box at the bottom of the screen while the main image is Brady prattling on about his rehab. (0-1) The Bucs are a little better (statistically) than the Bills but there's a good chance that Tampa is starting Josh Freeman--possibly his first ever start. Buffalo improves to 1-1. The Saints game should be a shootout. Brees will carve up Buffalo's zone coverage while TO and Evans run rampant through the Saints' secondary. I'm pegging this as a 1000+ yard offensive (combined, of course) day and one that Buffalo squeaks out. (2-1) With still no appreciable pass rush, Pennington has all day to dink and dunk his way down the field dropping the Bills to 2-2. The terrible Browns team comes to town and Buffalo avenges the two bizarre losses of the past two season to improve to 3-2. By this point of the season, I can see the wheels coming off of the Rex Ryan bandwagon. If he hasn't punched out his offensive coordinator it's a good bet he's hamstrung him by suspending some critical offensive player who he's deemed 'not tough enough'. Plus, Sanchez is starting, helping Buffalo to climb to 4-2. The Panthers put a stop to any good feelings Bills fans have been nurturing, simply stomping Buffalo in Carolina. (4-3) Buffalo goes all out to stop Andre Johnson and manages to win a second shootout, largely due to Evans and Owens to get to 5-3. Just as fans are starting to whisper about playoffs the Bills get smacked in Tennessee. The Titans run right at Maybin (starting for an ineffective Schobel) on their way to dropping Buffalo to 5-4. The Jags try to play without an WRs, allowing Buffalo to improve to 6-4. With Maybin coming on and Ellis contributing, Buffalo gets enough pressure on Pennington to win a second division game. (7-4) Buffalo head to Toronto for a home game (eyeroll) against the Jets. Sanchez has most of a season under his belt and gets his 3rd or 4th win. (7-5) The Bills return to Arrowhead, site of McKelvin's best game ever. He doesn't disappoint and makes Matt Cassel sorry he ever agreed to leave New England. (8-5) New England comes to town. While the novelty of Brady's injury has worn off (not that the TV crew will ever shut up about it), he's back to form and leads something like 7 consecutive TD drives. TO and Evans just can't keep up. (8-6) Matt Ryan may be in the midst of a sophmore slump but the Falcons' 2nd ranked rushing attack takes a page from the Titans and runs right at (and over) Maybin all game long. (8-7). With Buffalo out of the playoff hunt and the Colts in a dogfight with the Texans for the AFC South title the Bills narrowly avoid posting a winning season by ending the year 8-8.

For those of you who think I'm a pessimist, I'd point out that I have Buffalo winning 2 more division games in 2009 than 2008. I also have the Bills winning a couple of games that could easily go the other way.

I voted 11 or more - y u ask?

Because I think the Bills have the talent to take it all. No I am not on crack, just a homer, thats all. Seriously though, I think the Bills have a very good shot this year. They have very good, very balanced offensive weapons and their defense is solid, not giving up the home run ball. This whole season will depend on how the o-line protects Edwards and provides running lanes and the d-line SACKING the QB. It is won in the trenches.

The time to deliver is now and if you fail to do so you will no doubt witness the consequences first hand.

Unfortunately, the Bills are staring at a brutal schedule. On average the Bills will face the 13th ranked offense and 17th ranked defense. It’s not insurmountable but it will be a tough sled.

by Ron From NM on Jun 27, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I took the six or less option,

not because I don’t think the Bills are not more talented than last year, but because I have this baaaaad feeling our O-line will not be ready for the Pats on MNF. If Edwards lives to see week 2, I will be impressed. Add to that the fact our coaching staff is not known for their game time adjustments, and aside from last season, the Bills tendency to get off to slow starts, and I can see our season getting ugly in a hurry. I can see wins vs the Bucs, Browns, and Chiefs. Sprinkle in splits vs the Jets and Fins and you get 5-11….. seems about right. Juaron finally gets fired. We hire a new HC (Oh God…please let it be Cowher) who drafts his guy at QB and switches us to the 3-4. And the perpetual rebuilding process continues. But, I would be happy to be wrong.

The Prayer of Pass Rush - Hail Maybin, blessed with a quick first step, Bruce is with thee; most reverenced art thou among DEs in the AFC, and blessed be the fruit of thy pass rush. Holy Lord, Father of the swim move, we pray for our QB hurries to be numerous and our sacks to be plentiful. Be with us in Victory and at the hour of our Defeat. Amen.

I see Joe hit the 'pessimist' link and took a hearty swig out of his new mug...

5-11 may well become reality but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if a new coach kept Edwards. He’ll never be a Marino but I can see him eventually being a notch above Reich and a step below Kelly. Having more than 1 guy to throw to should help Edwards tremendously…

WHOOOOOOOOOO…………16-0 BABY!!!!!!!!!! GET ON THIS WAGON BECAUSE IT IS LEAVING THE STATION AND WE AINT GOT TIME TO WAIT FOR PEOPLE WHO GOT ONE FOOT ON THE WAGON AND ONE UP THEIR A$$. THE BILLS HAVE PACKED THIS POWDER KEG FULL OF BLACK POWDER AND ALL WE HAVE TO DO IS LIGHT THE FUSE ON MONDAY NIGHT AND LET THE EXPLOSION THAT WILL BE THE BILLS LAY WASTE TO THE NFL!!!!!!!

Back in the real world……I wonder if anyone has any stats on how often a new HC was accompanied by a change at QB within say 2 seasons?

I keep wobbling between 8 and 9 wins

I think the Dolphins will actually come back down to earth this season (I think we win both) and the Jets while game will not be able to keep up with the rest of the Division due to a rookie QB, but who will do better than expected (we take both there too).

I plan on just writing off the two NE games and just pray we keep it within 10 points at games end. This means in my mind we have 4 wins in hand, and now just need to eke out another 4-5 from the other 10 games. Very doable, but not enough to make the playoffs, but enough to keep DJ around for another season.

Right now about a quarter of the voters are picking 10 wins and another quarter picking 9. 10 would seem to be a bridge too far but then again a tough looking schedule can turn easier as the year goes along.

by Ron From NM on Jun 27, 2009 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I picked 9 in the poll. It feels better than picking 8 or less. I’ll let reality take care of itself. That’s the funny thing about schedules. Teams that were good last yeat may not be as good this year and vice versa. Like how the team that finishes last in the NFC South ends up winning the division every year.

It's just a game.

by jj24 on Jun 28, 2009 8:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it’ll be interesting to see how some of these teams do this year on our schedule. we all know that teams that look hard in june can be pushovers in october and november if a star player gets hurt. for example, what happens to the pats when/if brady gets hurt again? they can’t pull a third starting QB out of their hat after brady and cassel.

by the_prophet on Jun 28, 2009 11:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your never suppose to go 0-6 in your division

Unless your the Lions!!!! I picked 10 wins. Thinking we rebound and go 4-2 in our division. I think we will fall short against the Titans and the Falcons. That’s four losses. The other two loses, I’ll leave those two up to Coach Dick Jaroun and staff members to pick. This schedule doesn’t intimidate me that much, tougher than last year, probably yes. I believe that all the pieces are in place, even with these two rookie OL. Run the ball effectively and consistently. Toss in some draws and screens and go long when the defense allows us. Ten wins, but more importantly 4-2 in our division.

What about the Bills' ranks?

The Bills were ranked 25th in offense (yd/G) and 23rd in Pts/G. They were also ranked 14th in defence. Admittedly the schedule was statistically easier than this year’s but Carolina, Atlanta, Miami, Jets, Pats, Tampa, NO and Kansas all had schedules under .500.

I wouldn’t call myself an optimist but I think we realistically have a good chance against Carolina, Atlanta and maybe even Tennessee and Indy (moreso the latter). Tennessee has a good running game and defence, but the Colts have no running game, a good defence and in 2008, Indy’s receivers were somewhat inconsistent. Unless Anthony Gonzalez happens to have a breakout year, Wayne-Gonzalez isn’t as big a threat as Harrison-Wayne, plus our pass defence isn’t too terrible (besides the pass rush).

As for Carolina and Atlanta, the reason I think the Bills have a good chance against them as their defence hasn’t dramatically improved. Who do those teams really have on defence besides John Abraham and Julius Peppers? I know, the O-line is our biggest weakness, and they have two of the best running games (our defence’s weakness) but if by this point our air game has really taken off (and Edwards is still alive) we can carve them up.

For the division, I think we can beat the Jets twice and twice in Miami isn’t too far-fetched, but I’m sticking with once against Miami. New England is…well, what can I say? Our best chance against them will be Week 1 with everyone healthy and TO ready to make an impact. I KNOW if we beat them once, they won’t let it happen again.

I’ll give the Bills the Bucs, Saints, Dolphins, Jets, Jets, Browns, Texans, Jags, and Chiefs as my realistic (9-7). Atlanta, Indy and Carolina are toss-ups but I think we might have the juice to win one of them. Hell if I’m being optimistic, I might as well say we beat Miami twice and IND/CAR/ATL too (11-5). But 11 is the most I’m willing to guess at.

On the other hand, we have a real chance of dropping at least one Jets game and either Houston or New Orleans making us 7-9. Personally, I’d rather go 6-10 or lower and get the whole franchise overhauled rather than wallowing in mediocrity at 7-9 AGAIN.

by CronoDroid on Jun 28, 2009 2:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If we reach the magical 7-9, I’ll be stunned. I think this team is going to suck because of Jauron and Trent. I just don’t think it’s a match made in heaven. Well, actually, I think Trent could lead a winning team, but there’s no way I can get behind Jauron. The pass rush is going to be brutal again, and we have to hope Turk f’n Schonert is competent. That’s a lot to hope for. 6-10 is my prediction….hopefully, we’re good finally….

Jauron should have been canned last offseason, so I doubt he’ll get fired unless we start like 1-9 or something, unfortunately.

I have us coming in at 8-8

Real quick I’ll tell you I have them loosing to the Pats, Saints, and Dolphins the first time – and we beat the Bucs. Which starts us out at 1-3. But we are in the games and leaving a sediment of optimism to the National media and us crazy Bills fans. We will be competitive. Our running game will suffer without Lynch and our Offensive line will be much maligned.

Then we beat the Browns, Jets, and Texans, but loose to the Panthers in the next four games. Making us go on a 3-1 string. As you know most teams break the season down in quadrants, and there is an upswing of confidence and we seem to play pretty good. Now we are 4-4 through the first 8 games and reason to think this team can make a playoff push. By the way Lynch will be a big part of this push and all his off the field issues will be forgiven, as the fun loving running back wins back the hearts of the Bills fans.

We loose a tough fought game to the Titans. We just couldn’t handle their overall toughness, but we gain some much needed respect for hanging with one of the better and tougher teams in the league. We are now 4-5, and some of the Bills buzz nationally has gone away because our record leaves nothing to talk about.

Then we win the next 4 games against the Jags, Fins, Jets, and Chiefs. All of the sudden this team is showing up on highlights on every network. We are 8-5 and proving that the T.O. experiment has worked as he is over double digit touchdowns.

Now for the bad news. We will go on a 3 game skid loosing to the Pats, Falcons, and Colts. And our final record will be 8-8.

This team is going to be fun to watch offensively. The streak of going 3-1 to bring us to 4-4 and the 4 game streak in the middle of the season to bring us 8-5 will be twice the high that our 4-0 start to last year was. But the tough pill of the 3 game loosing skid will be such as much of a crash as we have endured in the last 10 years. Then during the off season the calmer heads at Buffalo Rumblings will validate the really good season we had, and we again will direct our attention to an optimistic 2010.

by Buffalonian on Jun 28, 2009 11:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

VERY optimistic

As MRW stated… Be realistic!

This team has an overhauled offensive line, no key additions on defense, and our only major addition on offense is TO.

I think 7 (or maybe 8) wins sounds about right. Our schedule is pretty difficult.

I don’t know why nobody counts Rhodes as a significant addition to the O. The guy is RB 1a for the first 3 games of the season and anytime somebody gets injured thereafter. If it’s him or Omon in that spot, it’s a no-brainer to me that we’re better off now.

by WhyBillsWhy on Jun 28, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Significant in what way? I don’t think he is going to win games for us, we would have otherwise lost without him. Is he a nice addition? Yes. Significant by my definition. No. But that’s just it. We got some better depth players, but didn’t really ad significant players other than T.O.

by Buffalonian on Jun 28, 2009 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Significant?

Really. How significant can Rhodes be while riding the pine? If you think he is better then Lynch/Jackson you are kidding yourself. Yeah, maybe he will play an important role in the first couple of games, but after that he will struggle to see 5 plays a game. His is a 3rd string running back. Period.

9-7 but miss playoffs

i think we beat NE first game, Schobel plays like the pro bowler he was, Brady just cannot get into the game. We beat the Jets twice, Sanchez shows promise but is no way near there yet, split games with Miami and business as usual when the Pats come to WNY, they hammer us. 4-2 in division and i would say we reclaim some of the respect that we lost last year by going 0-6
We beat Chiefs, Falcons, Jags, Panthers and the Browns
We lose to Colts, Texans, Saints, Titans, Bucs
Jauron survives Rumblers are torn between joy of a winning season and disappointment of no play offs and no new boss.
And the most shocking thing of the whole season, Trent Edwards is selected to the Probowl!!!!!!!!!

What will count most will be the trend

Everyone assumes that Jauron will get canned if the Bills don’t reach a magic number of wins, but that leaves out the reality that we have an owner and a quasi-GM (Russ Brandon) who will do anything they can to keep him. The key to this season will be the trend — whether the team starts doing better as the season progresses (especially if the o-line begins to come together) or whether the pattern is the same as last year and they collapse in the second half of the season. If the trend is toward improvement and the Bills are competitive (and even begin to win) against some of their tougher opponents in November and December, Jauron will be back and most fans will be ok with it. If not, the reluctant owner and quasi-GM may have no choice except to do what they desperately do not want to do. So while I think the end result will either be 7-9 or 8-8, the key thing will be how we get to those numbers — and not the numbers themselves.

by Macktruck on Jun 29, 2009 12:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Want a trend?

In five seasons with the Bears, Jauron’s record was 35-45, which averages out to 7-9. In three straight seasons with the Bills, Jauron’s record each season was 7-9. If you omit the 1-4 record that he had as interim HC at Detroit, Jauron’s lifetime record over 8 seasons as an NFL head coach is 56-72, which averages out to …….. say it with me……7-9. If the Bills go 7-9 this season, it might be safe to assume that Juaron is capable of getting a time to 7-9 and not much more.

The Prayer of Pass Rush - Hail Maybin, blessed with a quick first step, Bruce is with thee; most reverenced art thou among DEs in the AFC, and blessed be the fruit of thy pass rush. It’s absolutely right that Jauron’s career-long trend as a HC is not impressive, but the reality is that that isn’t going to be a factor in the decision as to whether he stays in Buffalo beyond 2009. If Wilson, Brandon, Modrak were concerned about what Jauron has done in the past, he would have been gone after 2008. Regardless of how we may feel as fans, the fact is that they like him a lot, have faith in him and will keep him if at all possible. Above all, they don’t want to blow things up and start all over yet again with a new HC. That’s why I’m convinced that, come January, they will make their decision based on the trend THIS YEAR. If there is improvement during the second half of the season, Jauron stays. If the team goes 9-7 or better, he stays. Otherwise, they will may let him go, but with great reluctance.

I thought Wilson was ready to can Juaron, but the other members of the inner circle talked him out of it

You have to remember that Wilson wanted Marz….Levi wanted Jauron. If the Bills are not competitive, Wilson may not let the FO sway him this time. If the FO wants to keep him, they can always find an excuse why he deserves another year. New QB, not enough talent, new O-line, injuries, etc. If the FO is waiting for a season with no excuses before they feel they have to fire Jauron, he may get another extension before he is fired. At some point you have to realize you are what your record says you are. I think 8 seasons is a pretty good indication of what we can expect from Jauron on a year to year basis. Maybe 7-9 is good enough for the FO. After all, you don’t really need to win games to sell tickets, just bring in some clown to entertain the fans.

Amen.

Actually Jauron has proven he is capable of 13 wins...

He has averaged 7 wins. Different numeric values. :-)

yes, and he has proven he is capable of only 4 wins in a season too

which is why I used his 8 year average.

I know why you used it.

I’m just saying it’s not out of the realm of possibility that this team blows up – either in a good way or a bad way.

Just read all the comments and........

booooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

almost everyone that commented only had the bills at 9 wins at the most. Yet the polls show 23% (majority) have 10+ wins.

O.K. sorry about the “boo” but in being a realist I beleive in a few things.

2009 is THE year of the Bills

New line concerns – its not THAT tough to play line people. Most comments I’ve read say “oh it takes time – they need to jel/gel/jello”. Just an FYI – these guys have been playing line for at least 6 years if not longer. Not only that – the rookies were taken in pretty much the first round as I’ll call it. Levitre was a little late – but he’s not a 5th or even 3rd round pick.

Our lines gonna be fine – relax homeboys and homegurls.

Trent – he is what he is – with the weapons – our O’s gonna be nasty – just bet on it.

Defense will be alot like last year – not going to win a lot of games – but shouldn’t lose you many either. They’re solid enough to get us 10 wins.

DJ and Shonert – jeez – I know they have their issues – but their not 5 year old kids with no education what so ever. Most of their issues I think have been blown way out of porportion. They’re not that bad or they wouldn’t be in the NFL still – come on – I’ve been haters on DJ and Shonert in the past – and rightfully so – but their not cow milkers trying to be football coaches – they can make it work. its not cold fusion or dark matter here folks.

Prediction: 10-6/11-5/12-4

at Pats – W – oh yeah I said it. Sorry Brady, sorry Pats fans. We’re eyeing you guys here – not hoping for a good preseason from Tom, not hoping that the line holds. We’re aiming for you – as in your our bulls eye. Win time baby – WIN TIME
Bucs – W – like i’m worried about a rebuilding team – oh and its home so it won’t be 300 degrees
Saints – L – yeah that offense is scary – remember the AZ game last year – yup
at Dolphins – W – 2-0 in the division already J2? you bet your a**
Browns – W – the quinn show begins
at Jets – L – defense is going to kill us
at Panthers – L – Jake the Snake has a good game – boooooooo
Texans – W – we seem to beat these guys – history continues
at Titans – W – titans will be .500 at this point – sorry – sans haynesworth that D’s pretty average
at Jaguars – W – just how its going down.
Dolphins – W – break out the brooms people
Jets (Toronto) – W- get the 2nd
at Chiefs – W – why? pretty sure our d’s going to remember Cassell on NE last year and make sure he doesn’t have that success again.
Pats – L – they’re going to be fighting for they’re playoff lives and will need this
at Falcons – W – yup – we’re better
Colts – L – think they’re going to need these last few games to get the division.

whats that 11-5? something like that – give or take a game.

yeah – we’re that good – not great – not going to win a lot in the playoffs – but we can win all these games. there really are no teams I think we don’t have a chance against. not even NE.

I object to the cow milkers reference.

If you knew any cow milkers, you’d know they are an erudite crowd that thinks about the implications of the Wildcat all the time.

I said 10...

I think we are a lot closer than some people think…There were wins that were squandered last season…(Thanks JP for that roll out strip/fumble…I hope I never see that play again)…With the addition of TO, and the emergence of the young DB talent (McKelvin/Corner) I think we’re heading in the right direction. Initially, I was angry that we kept Jauron, but the more I think about it the more it made sense not to blow the entire team up…Trent will be good this year…And I think the o-line will jell before the regular season starts, thanks in part to the 5 pre-season games, and in part due to the character of the players were acquired…

If you read kaisertowns post you might agree that we’re not that far off…

I love me some DB's...I might just be Dick Jauron's long lost twin!

It was a poll question... I pasted a screen grab of it.

most people said 8 – 29%

Three quarters of respondents said 7, 8, or 9 wins.

Another asks:

What city is a better long-term home for an NFL Team?
Buffalo 74%
Toronto 26%

Every state favored Buffalo.

That’s the way it should be.

And another asks:
Should the Bills play games in Toronto?
Yes 23%
No 77%

I can’t seem to find that poll that you took the screen grab of…

ESPN.com makes a big habit of stealing other people's stuff all the time

They just get away with it because people are too scared and or stupid to call them on it. At least Florio despite his anti-Bills stance recently has been calling them out on this BS.
