Bruce Smith - #4 Pass rusher of all time
I know what you're saying - he's the leading sacker of all time.
Can you really argue with Lawrence Taylor, Reggie White, and Deacon Jones ahead of him?

Bruce Smith #4
Ok so Bruce may not be the greatest DE of all time.
But, the numbers don’t lie!

Sacks weren't an official stat until 1983.
So Deacon Jones has none if I am not mistaken. :-)

I put him behind Jones and equal to Reggie White, definately ahead of Taylor.

I’m sorry, but no he isn’t. I think he’s right where he belongs.

If Bruce played for the Giants or the Cowboys he would be ranked number 1

I’d have him ahead of LT.
Bruce had 13 seasons with 10 or more sacks. LT had 7.
Bruce had at least 13 sacks 7 times, LT 4 times.
I think longevity counts here too.

Better than LT?
Would you mind explaining you thought process on this when you get a free moment? I’m having a difficult time understanding how you ranked LT higher than Bruce…

My guess....
It was probably for his excellent acting in “Any Given Sunday.”

That and the fact that LT was just a better player. If I’m flip-flopping Bruce with anyone, it’s him. But players like him revolutionized the sport. I agree with K that longevity needs to count in something like this, but LT literally turned the sport on its head.

Thanks…I agree that if you don’t look at stats at all, and just look at highlight reels that LT was the better player…But, given Bruce’s longevity and stat line I would say there is no contest…Career-wise, Bruce was better…And I don’t think I’m being a homer here. Jones was better than Bruce, imo…But thanks for answering my question…

I’m totally ok with Jones and White being ahead of Smith. LT, not really.

I think Bruce better than LT and Jones
BUT I wonder why NFL stats guys haven’t thought to go retroactive on stats on like Sacks for Players who definitely had an inclination for that in their game such as Deacon Jones..

You would have to go back and watch every game tape.
That’s why.

And that would be a bad thing, how? If I were to get paid to do it, I’d be all over it…Heck, I’ve watched enough crappy old NFL Films video (for free) on wet or cold days that going through some actual non-commentary filled game tape would be a nice change of pace. I wouldn’t even charge much!!

no big deal
Jones didn’t play every snap, basically half of a game, and it wouldn’t be that difficult. I think its just not that important to them I guess.

agreed
i think you would have to say bruce is better than atleast deacon and LT. Deacon basically got to do anything he wanted to OL if you’ve ever seen him play. He used to take his hand and hit a player in the head as hard as he could to stun them. LT was dominant and just cuz he was a LB and revolutionized a position doesn’t make him better just more unique. Reggie was just as good so I can’t really argue. I think Bruce Smith’s cameo in Little Giants puts him over the top.
