Bob Sanders' influence in the draft?

You know, with the discussion coming up again about taking Jairus Byrd when Everette Brown was still on the board, I've been wondering how much influence Bob Sanders had in the decision.  Not so much Sanders saying, "Pick this guy" or "Don't pick that guy," but more along the lines of Sanders coming in and saying, "I see what you've got in your current D-line; I know I can coach them up to be more successful, especially with the addition of Maybin."

What do you think?  How much influence did Sanders (and the FO's beliefs about Sanders' coaching abilities) have in the decision to pass up more D-line help (either DE or DT)?

Will Bob Sanders be able to orchestrate a significant improvement in D-line performance this season?
You bet. Bob Sanders is a miracle worker.

You're delusional. When the mud starts flying, Sanders will be mumbling to himself about why he ever thought he could do anything with the "talent" on the Bills' D-line.

that’s an interesting perspective. IF anything comes of him being added, then i’d definitely lean towards him telling them that they didn’t need another rookie mini-DE guy. if nothing happens, then i’ll just blame it on Jauron’s bent towards DBs.

Hey

You got something against DB’s, buddy…Well, do ya?!

:)

Sorry, had to put that out there…It’s in my blood.

I love me some DB's...I might just be Dick Jauron's long lost twin!

A guy that got run out of town in Green Bay should not have that big of a say come draft day.

I don’t know if that’s true. If a former DC is coming in to coach your line, and if the current regime recognizes what poor D-line play they’ve had, and Sanders explains how he plans on coaching them up, I could see him having an influence in the draft board/strategy.

If I were a D-line coach

I would never pin my hopes to McCargo getting better.

The Prayer of Pass Rush - Hail Maybin, blessed with a quick first step, Bruce is with thee; most reverenced art thou among DEs in the AFC, and blessed be the fruit of thy pass rush. Holy Lord, Father of the swim move, we pray for our QB hurries to be numerous and our sacks to be plentiful. Be with us in Victory and at the hour of our Defeat. Amen.

Yup

And if the current coaches couldn’t recognize the problems our DL faced prior to the draft, we’ve got bigger problems than those….

Not really.

He was fired in Green Bay where they brought in Dom Capers and switched to a 3-4 since Sanders wasn’t getting the job done. He might be a great D Line coach – and that’s probably got his DC job – but he’s been here a few months. I don’t want that guy holding the draft room captive with his word.

Agreed. I think we should all be happy that he got his guy in Maybin and see what he can do this year. As much as it pains me to say it, DJ’s word has to be more important then the D-line’s word when it comes to drafting.

If you are going to mention that he got run out of town (along with all the other defensive coaches) then you have to mention the previous seasons where their defense was solid. Sanders was made the scapegoat but overall the body of work was solid.

I dn’t think that he was run out of town, after all GB’s deffence was very good with him at the helm. It think his fireing came more of a result of GB’s winning culture. If they don’t win, they fire the staff, even if they are good.

Sanders is a good coach, his time was simply up in GB.

Maybe run out of town was too harsh.

Two years ago they were in the top five. Both other year they were in the bottom half of the league, though.

I really doubt that the head coach and Brandon/Modrak types are even allowing the position coaches to speak during the first few rounds of the draft. Especially new position coaches. No way does Sanders get a say in the draft process. Buffalo has a handful of important scouts and a bunch of other guys who scout for a career. They have a few front office people who are close to having the final say on personnel decisions. They have a head coach and an offensive and defensive coordinator. Why would anyone care what their brand new DL coach, who still hadn’t seen any of his new players practice yet, have to say about the draft?

The real reason that Buffalo didn’t draft Everette Brown is because they didn’t really have space for Brown on the roster. They didn’t want to keep 6 DEs and they didn’t want to cut Kelsay or Ellis. Does anyone think that Buffalo realistically considered taking a second DE that early in the draft? I doubt they even cared that Brown was on the board.

Ok, then look at it this way. How much do you think the FO and coaching staff is pinning their own hopes for the success of the D-line on a new coach rather than new blood?

I think the coaches and FO are putting way more hope on a healthy and productive season from Schobel than on a new position coach. They’ve got to think that Maybin is going to have a bigger impact than Sanders too. Considering that the core of the DL are veterans (Stroud, Williams, Schobel, Kelsay, Denney), I’m not sure how the addition of Sanders can have anything other than a marginal effect. The team might be hoping for nice improvements from McCargo or Ellis based on an experienced guy like Sanders offering a new perspective, but I’m not sure how much of a difference a big step forward from those guys would make anyways.

I hear you, but considering veterans like Kelsay are saying Sanders is teaching them “common sense” things about the pass rush that they never knew, I wouldn’t be surprised to see some improvement all the way around.

If it’s common sense, i’d argue the players should have known it without coaching. If this is also the case, why didn’t the previous guy not see their inability to notice things and teach them – chalking it up to inferior play at the line?

That’s been my thought all along – that the previous coach just wasn’t very good. Someone who didn’t know how to bring out the best in players. What Kelsay said was that Sanders was teaching them things that made sense when he showed them, but that they had never been shown before. What that sounds like to me is that Sanders is an excellent coach, someone who is able to get the most out of his players, without just relying on his players’ athleticism alone.

I think there’s probably too much emphasis on the impact that a position coach can have.

McNally was supposed to make such a big difference with the O-line and it really wasn’t that different before, during or after he was with the team.

There might be a marginal difference with Sanders but I can’t imagine it’s that much and I’d be surprised if it influenced the drafting at all.

There’d be more of an impact if the Bills traded for Indy’s Bob Sanders, although I’m sure many would say he wouldn’t be a play maker in this defense……….

I’m thinking that the later option is the case and that Sanders went “I have enough talent to do something”. Let’s be honest here, he’s not a miracle worker, but we do have very solid talents at the DT positions and I for one do NOT think that we needed to add a big DT to complete out group.

As for the DE’s, he got his guy with Maybin, and Schobel is very coachable. Denney has proven to be a very usefull utility DE, something that I’m sure Sanders appresiates. Ellis has yet to show us anything, so I’m not putting any hopes at all, but Sanders should help his development. And Kelsey… well I’d just rather we cut him.

As for drafting Byrd over Brown, I don’t think that it was a lack of pull from Sanders as much as it was Jauron trumping everyone else there with his love for DB’s. And as much as I hated picking Byrd over Brown at the time, drafting Byrd was still as smart move (although not as smart as drafting Brown would have been).

In the end I think that Sander’s coaching ability combined with the speed rush of Maybin and the added experience of Williams will prove to make in significantly better D-Line (it’s pretty hard to be any worst then we were last year). And in my honest opinion Sanders may be a future candidate for our Deffensive Co-ordinater, especially if this season goes bad.

That is simply not true.

The Bills picked the next guy on their draft board or close to it. If Brown was ranked highly and Byrd was not they would have taken Brown. Jauron’s supposed love of DBs had nothing to do with it. That’s why 6 guys evaluate each player – to remove biases like that.

Hey personally I like the Byrd pick. I took me a while to like it, but I do. I honestly don’t much care what the process to get him here was, I’m just looking forward to seeing him play.
