Schouman the starting TE?
I just got around to reading Chris Brown's Fan Friday and when a fan asks if Shawn Nelson will be starting week one he would "plug in Derek Schouman". I would personally be shocked to see anyone other than Derek Fine at the position opening day.

Well
when you don’t have a set OL and a marginal (or am i wrong?) FB, I can see why Schouman might be their guy on opening day. I don’t like the thought, but tons can happen between now and opening day.

I believe
Trent Edwards said he is the most comfortable with Schouman at this point. I suppose that could change as training camp progresses. I always thought Schouman was too small to be an effective blocker but I have only heard positive things about his blocking.

Most comfortable as in a guy who doesn’t get involved too much, thus allowing me one less guy to have to worry about on the field?

to me that would mean one less target for trent to throw too so that wouldn’t make sense for trent to think that.

I’m being pessimistic. The need for a killer player at TE is long overdue.

agreed
with 2 good wr’s and a good slot receiver i think TE isn’t as important in the passing game this year. if nelson comes around quickly this could be a very dangerous offense though.

Trent is more comfortable with him
because he has been there the longest, fine missed half of last year
He may not be the starter week 1 but he will as the season progresses

Fine has waaay more upside than Schouman. If Schouman is starting, I expect Fine to take over by Game 3. He’s a more vicious blocker and more “complete” TE in my eyes. He just needs a full season experience, but I expect him to start over Schouman for the majority of the season.

I wish Nelson could be ready faster…but I’d rather see Fine or Schouman than rush a rookie who’s not ready.
