Michael Lombardi: Will Bills Offensive Line Work?
We've talked this to death but I really like Lombardi's writing and insight. He seems to think Langston Walker can be up to the task if he is 100% focused. He also says Buffalo needs to pop the pads a little harder in camp this year. I'll let you know if they do...

I agree...
…with the idea that perhaps camp should be a little more physical with more hitting and full pads practices. I understand Jauron’s mentality about limiting injuries and keeping guys fresh for the season but this seems to be the most obvious way to find out who the starters are going to be (Wood, Levitre, McKinney, Chambers) and to also help them gel as quickly as possible. Perhaps camp will continue to be the same as it has been in past years under Jauron and the extra pre-season game will serve this purpose. If that is the case, I for one, hope that all of the possible starters at guard get extra looks in those 5 games.
On a side note, where does the criticism of Langston Walker as “unfocused” come from? I have never heard that before. Is there some specific plays or on-field evidence that we can point to to prove this? I think that he is capable of taping a 68 second webisode each week and still performing capably during games.

I think Lombardi means Walker can’t lose focus at any time because we can’t afford a breakdown on his end. He isn’t likely able to make up for any mistakes with his athleticism…

"As the governor of Louisiana once said, the only way Chris Kelsay can lose his job is if he got caught in bed with a dead girl or a live boy."
Here is the quote from Lombardi:
He has the skill to play on the left side, although he doesn’t always compete for the entire game, resulting in some bad plays.
I will admit that I don’t study the O-line play with the kind of zeal that RonFromNM does but can someone point me instances when he stopped competing? I always thought Walker was more professional than that. Perhaps Lombardi has him confused with the former left tackle?

I don't know either...
but I don’t remember Lombardi making stuff up. He is as solid as they come so there must be something. I’ll tweet him and see if I get a response.

It’s probably because Walker isn’t the nastiest guy out there. He’s played soft in the past and that may appear that he gave up on plays, and maybe he did….

I agree that Lombardi is solid. I hope he gets back to you. Again, I’m not saying he’s making anything up, I would just like to be educated more on the finer points (or lack thereof) of Langston Walker’s play.

He got back to me but didn't give a whole lot more insight...
michaelombardi @MattRichWarren I was referring to his lack of concentration as he competes, thanks for reading…
I don’t know what that means necessarily…. It probably has to do with giving up on plays but I don’t remember that happening or not happening.

I appreciate your trying but you are right, his response didn’t really add much. Perhaps we can get Ron to do an analysis?

I heard back again...
@MattRichWarren it takes a competitive fire to keep playing hard all the time in the nfl, sometimes lw loses that edge….he has to improve
Essentially Lombardi says he’s not playing every snap 100%. Let’s hope a move to the blind side wakes him up to that.

It better…..
Obviously, I agree with the idea that training camp needs to be tougher and a little more physical than in the past. This team has gotten out-toughed and out-worked many times during Jauron’s tenure. It’s time for them to become the team that dictates the physicality of the game, and you have to practice that to actually play that way. Same as in practicing in the cold and elements.
If this team wasn’t thoroughly dominated every time it played a playoff team, especially along the lines, it wouldn’t be as big of an issue. This team needs to practice in pads, with hitting, more than Jauron has ever considered in the past. They need the work, the OL needs to gel ASAFP, and this team needs to develop a physical identity even sooner. I’m sick of watching them play listless, weak football and getting overpowered because they’ve played scared. Let’s change the losing mentality of this team by doing that…

I couldn’t agree more. I am with you that in the past that this team has often lacked an identity and often suffered in games because their opponents were tougher. I have written on these boards before that this team has lacked a “culture of winning” since Levy retired as coach. Teams that are consistent from year-to-year in any sport and on any level KNOW HOW TO WIN! It’s an intangible quality that can’t really be measured in stats (besides W-L) and won’t show up at the combine but championship-caliber teams ALL have it. It has to start at the top (Ralph, Russ, DJ) and trickle all the way down to the least talented players (Ko Simpson, Brandon Rodd etc.).
