"For the naysayers, I'd say he (surrendered) 3 1/2 sacks in two years, 32 games," Kugler said. "Langston has proven his worth as a pass protector. I think he'd be the first to tell you he's got some work to do in the run game. Langston's a willing worker."

Take that, Jason Peters…
Trent will need that kind of protection to make it through the season in one piece.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
We will need the running game too thouh so let’s hope walker improves on that front before we say we are gonna be fine with walker

I’m not too worried about Walker’s running game. While he’s not as dominent as Jason Peters, he can hold his own. Marshawn and Co. should do fine.

I’d love to see something to truly back this up, not that I don’t believe Kugler. It just seems rather low.
This doesn’t prove he can handle the left side though, that’s the problem. LE’s are a lot different that the RDE that he’ll be facing this year….Let’s hope he pulls through.

Hope so.
If he needs plenty of help, can we truly be pleasantly surprised? I think we should assume he’ll be fine if he gets a lot of help….

I’m honestly more worried about having a rookie play beside him then anything else. I would be much more comfortable with Walker at LT if he had Chambers beside him as opposed to Levitre.

yeah – I know I’m sounding optimisitic but I guess what I really meant was that he won’t be a turnstyle over there. He’ll be serviceable or adequate – no spectacular – but not folwer/preston bad at the position. I think if we can get just average/above average play from him we’ll be alright.
here’s to hoping

I honestly think that expecting more from Walker is a mistake. And I also think that all we really need from him this season is to be average to slightly above average in order to do alright.
The difference between having Peters maning the LT and having Walker there is that we know that Walker isn’t a pro-bowler so we can base our blocking schemes more as a unit. As opposed to leaving him on an island in the blocking scheme like we did with Peters a lot last year.
This is a way different line ppl, and the startegies that they will use will also be totally different then they were last year. To expect Walker to have to play like Jason Peters is a HUGE mistake. What we should expect from Langston to hold his own and be a reliable LT; which I have no doubt that he will be.
by CanadianBillsFan on Jul 15, 2009 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions
agreed – he’ll get help for sure. Thats why i’m not expecting him to flop over there. Even simple things like Trent pump faking can help out Langston. I think he’ll be just fine because the coaches won’t ask him to do anything they feel he cannot handle.
I expect a RB on Trents side against Freeney because of speed – things like that. We’ll be o.k.

Worse than that is
the fact that Kugler either doesn’t know or is not willing to admit there is a difference between playing LT and RT.
The key to the Bills 2009 season; Can Trent Edwards grow beyond just not being Loseman
I’m willing to bet that he’s not willing to admit it publicly. He’s the O-Line coach, it’s his job to make his guys look good in the eyes of the press, so of course he’s going to say what he did. I think this is just a case of say one thing publicly and do another behind closed doors.
by CanadianBillsFan on Jul 15, 2009 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions
Agreed, but you can't take it to that extreme
Kugler could have recognized the concerns people have and still stated his belief in Walker to do the job.

Walker
I have faith in Langston, and don’t really have concern for him against speed rushers. Sure he will lose some battles, but he’s done nothing but shut up and play during his time as a Bill and I have zero doubts that will not continue.
The bigger concern is how does a line with 2 rookies, and 5 newly placed pieces work together? That’s the only question that really matters. I think the Bills did an admirable job of addressing the OL, and with McKinney, Chambers, and Bell as hopeful, capable backups, it’s all in place. Everyone focuses on Walker, cuz he’s a giant man and he’s filling in for Peters. But Walker will be fine, sure he’ll lose a few battles, but with him being so familiar with the system, scheme, and Trent I don’t think there’s much to worry about in all honesty

Nothing a few 3-step drops can't help
Just look at how much it helped the guy under center in New England.
Getting rid of the ball more quickly helps defeat the pass rush.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
exactly
The QB getting rid of the ball quickly does wonders for an O-Line
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
And a few play action passes wouldn't hurt either

What happens when Defenses cut off TO on the slant? Evans has never proven capable of being an over the middle guy, so how many 3 step passes can we expect success out of?

You can do a three step drop with more then 2 WRs in the game. Reed or even one of the TEs could be the target.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
I think that a lot of us are under estimating the amount of passes that will be directed at Reed, Fine and Nelson. And if they’re covered too, Marshawn and Jackson have proven to be great dump off options.
Although I’d still prefer to see more passes directed at Lee and TO.

I would still like to see TE help on the left side alot

3.5 sacks? But that was on the right side…usually the pass rush comes from the blind side. I’m sure only giving up 3.5 sacks in 32 games is actually pretty good but now Walker has to deal with the Joey Porters and John Abrahams of the world. Still I think he can do okay as long as Edwards gets rid of the ball quickly.
Cassel was sacked 47 times this year with the same line that only gave up 21 sacks the year before with Brady. I think Brady’s quick decision making had a lot to do with preventing sacks.

this is key, IMO. if edwards doesn’t sit back there, he’ll be fine. what kugler was saying is that walker’s good enough to prevent the free sacks that we gave up a lot last year when peters was too busy getting his chicken-wing-filled ass off the line and had people blowing by him. even if he’s still having people get by him, giving edwards even one more second is enough.

First – welcome to the blog.
Second – excellent, excellent avatar.
Third – a pass rush can come from any side. No, Walker wasn’t dealing with a team’s best pass rusher on many occasions, but the idea that he wasn’t dealing with a persistent rush is faulty. The guy can pass block.

Look at the Bills
Hmmm… You could face Aaron Schoebel or … Chris Kelsay. A little bit of a match-up difference, wouldn’t you say Brian.

Ready to get yelled at.
There is a lot of love for Walker in these parts! I think it stems from the downright disgust most fans around here hold for Jason Peters.

Stereotypes
are a dangerous thing. People have been fed the same stereotypes by football talking heads that they can’t help regurgitate it. The stereotype is that teams always put their best pass rushers on the QBs blindside. This may be true, but NFL defenses are transient and go through cycles. The Bills are in a division in which all three divisional opponents are running a 3-4 defense… a defense in which the pressure is as variable as the front.
Cassel was sacked 47 times because he’s a 2-read QB who relies on his squirminess and mobility to buy time in the pocket… where Tom Brady looks like a genius at QB because he has unparalleled pocket awareness and can actually be a 1-2-3-4-5 read QB with that ability.
And let’s not forget that the Bills were 2-0 in those games that Walker started LT, so it’s not like he’s inept or anything. I don’t think people understand how much Peters screwed with the OL chemistry by jerking around so much. When he came back, Walker had to switch back to RT mentally and physically, a place where he hadn’t taken any reps for some time at that point.
Whatever, the Bills have competent players at every OL position, what more can you ask for?

Brian might get mad
But mobile commenting doesn’t have a plus 1 thingy and I think arrow nailed it. Competent oline is all we can ask for after last year. I think we will be better, they have the whole offseason to gell. Walker will hold his own and if he can give up 9 sacks or less he’ll be downright good in my book.

Bills weakness was up the middle
Center position killed us, guards suffered, and tackles suffered, but a bit less…to me, we have upgraded the line as whole, while losing bothe the best (debatably Peters), and worst of our O-line (definitely Preston & Fowler with Dockery no where near that much loot)
I am good with LW at LT
The Bills CAN win any game
at this point, if we got an upgrade inside, i’d be happy with parrish at LT.

I get what you're saying
The center has been so bad for so long, I can’t remember the last good one we had after Kent Hull. I’d like to think there was one….but who?
The Bills CAN win any game
Trey Teague was decent but he was already past his prime by the time he arrived in Buffalo. He also suffered a few injuries that kept him from performing as well as he might have. I can’t think of anyone else that deserves to be mentioned.
