Jauron and the 3-4
"Jacksonville's Jack Del Rio and Buffalo's Dick Jauron sat down to talk about their respective teams, and both coaches said they worked on a 3-4 defense as a variation of their 4-3 schemes. Each believes it will come in handy this coming season, especially in passing situations."
So is that how Maybin will be used as an OLB? Two DEs, one DT, and Maybin? I can dig it

I would love to see the Bills use a situational 3-4 this year, I really would. But do we have the DE’s to make it happen?
I would have to think that if we line up in a 3-4 that our NT would be Stroud, with Schobel and Williams manning the DE positions, which migh actually work. What I’m worried about is our LB’s in a 3-4. The OLB’s would have to be Maybin (great move) and Mitchell (not sure if he can handle the 3-4 OLB) and the ILB’s would be Puz and Ellisson. Ellisson would be a very weak link at ILB according to me. If they do use the 3-4 I would really like to see Nic Harris as the second ILB, I think he’d be better at it then Ellisson.

Then again, maybe they could also swing Schobel out to OLB instead of Mitchell, and have Stround, Williams and Johnson line the DL. But i think that would make for a weaker DL too.
So I’m honestly not sure how I feel about this, because if we do use the 3-4, I think it would be a very weak formation judging from the players that we have.

It’d be a weak 3-4 if it were 1st and 10. Putting a lineup like that out there on 3rd and 8 isn’t weak at all.

True enough. And it would be a situational 3-4 so it would have the potential to work. But only situationally.

Nope, not even close….BUT that doesn’t really matter. We’d be running a 3-4 look in passing situations where it won’t matter as much if our DE’s can hold up closer to the interior in the running game.
I’m guessing that when we run the 3-4 in passing situations it’ll be Stroud at the NT, Schobel on the right side, Maybin on the left as an OLB/DE and probably Denney or Sp. Johnson inside of him. Mitchell would likely rush off the edge as well when we bring 5.
It’s probably just a 4-3 but with Maybin standing up when he rushes. Putting Denney inside of him is just like putting him at DT. If Stroud lines up over center, then that’s probably why they’re calling it the 3-4 even if the personnel is more indicative of a 4-3….Mostly though, it’s to try and get as many potential pass rushers on the field at once, which is exactly what the coaches need to try and do….

Just a way to get Maybin in there in passing situations. If the kid has the drive, I think he has the speed to at least cause trouble, and perhaps, after some time, cause protection to slide his way

I actually think that not having protections slide his way is the best thing that Maybin has going for him this year. I think he’ll make a good amount of plays because Co-ordinators wont concentrate much on him. Although, if all goes well, that wont last long.

Only at first
If the kid comes out and is making plays, then by midseason the protection slides away from him. But I do agree, alot of his early success, if there is any, will be because other players like Schobel are drawing attention

I’ll entirely agree with you on that one. And I’d have absolutly no problem using it on 3rd and longs or other obvious passing downs. I just don’t want to see it against the run cause then we’d be screwed.

Well we dont’ have the DL for it, so I wouldn’t worry about seeing it on run downs….

I would love to see that.
Problem is the Coaching Staff will probably begin to make that our set third and long formation every time continuing our reputation of predictable playcalling. I hope that will change this year.
I enjoyed the “Creep” formation of pass rushing, seemed to confuse the hell out of the o-line. A mix of the Creep, 3-4 variant and zone blitz should help the pass rush. No matter, we need pressure. I don’t care if Maybin is up, down or upside-down, as long as the pressure is there and coming from the front four or five, our D will succeed.
