Bills sign LB Harris; five rookies remain unsigned

The Buffalo Bills have announced that they have agreed to terms with fifth-round draft pick LB Nic Harris.  As per club policy, terms were not publicly disclosed.  We'll keep an eye peeled on that front for you.

Harris becomes the third Bills rookie to sign his first contract, joining sixth-round CB Cary Harris and seventh-round CB Ellis Lankster, who signed on the dotted line on July 7.

Five more rookies remain unsigned: DE Aaron Maybin, OG Eric Wood, S Jairus Byrd, OG Andy Levitre and TE Shawn Nelson.  Training camp opens for the Bills on Saturday morning, leaving the Bills with a hair under three days to get these five players signed and into camp on time.

I almost forgot we’re coming down to crunch time right now aren’t we? 3 days until camp opens and we have 5 rooks unsigned.

However this isn’t unusual – it usually comes down to the wire – I bet they get something done for all of these guys. Maybin might be a day or two late – but should be o.k.

Let's Get er Done

I’ve been waiting for this to happen, realizing the closer we get the greater the odds of the signees. Not sure why it has taken this long for some of them but there are other teams in the same boat. This weekend it starts and it starts with four practices. I would like to see Byrd there for all of them and honestly, Maybin as well. Thanks for the update Brian, please keep them coming.

Maybin's not going to start. We need Wood and Levitre

Those guys need every minute of training camp and preseason. They could both be in the starting lineup in Foxborough against the Patriots.
The front office is a little too casual in signing people that are this critical to our success, in my opinion.
How hard can it be? You look at O-linemen drafted ahead of them, and behind them, in the 2009 draft. You look at last year’s contracts and add, say, 3%. Put in a little room for negotiation. As long as you’re not dealing with Rosenhaus, this can’t be that difficult. I assume the FO has Internet access and fax machines.
Russ, this is not rocket science. Show the fans you’re serious about winning. Get your high draft picks, the guys you’re relying on to make a difference this year, in camp on time.

The Agents don't wont to sign any contracts yet...

they want the ceilings and floors to be established by other agents…as time goes by and more picks sign, the dominoes will start to fall. Can’t blame Brandon if the negotiations only involve one party right now, all will be well, this is where he earns his paycheck.

There are a lot of unsigned draft picks right now on a lot of teams.

And the majority of them will be in camp.

wow.

Did the Pats really sign all but one pick?

by Buffalo Mo on Jul 22, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

I wonder how they do that. And the Bills can’t because why…?

Get the Bills back to the big game!

by Blitz on Jul 23, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s easy how they do it. They’re the Pats. If you were a rookie that was just drafted to one of the best teams in pro football, wouldn’t you be in a hurry to sign so you can start playing for them? I know I would. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Bills, but I honestly think that there is no better team to be a rookie on then the Pats.

yeah – I expect Maybin to be a Sunday or Monday signing.

Be nice if Wood/levitre and Byrd all get signed before – I think they’re more important than Maybin at this point.

Only 2 first round picks have been signed thus far and both are QB’s. there will be many 1st round picks holding out this year.

by gatornation on Jul 22, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions

Well, i’m not sure so correct me, but I think the teams can start camp only 2 weeks prior to their first pre-season game. Since we have the HOF game we are starting a week earlier than the rest of the teams save for obviously the Titans.

So that could be a reason why more 1st round picks haven’t signed yet

could be

I just have a feeling with nobody outside of QB’s signed from the 1st round and the potential work stoppage in the next year or so teams and agents (pressure from the player’s union) are being very careful not to take any missteps.

That is correct J2…

Wow, I actually knew something today. :)

From the Buffalo News
The Bills have signed fifth-round pick Nic Harris, a linebacker from the University of Oklahoma. Harris has an outside chance to push for a starting position this summer, since the Bills’ battle at strong-side linebacker is wide open. Keith Ellison is the incumbent and second-year man Alvin Bowen is expected to challenge for the spot. Harris was the 147th player taken in the draft. The 146th, Scott McKillop signed with San Francisco for $1.94 million and a signing bonus of $192,250. The 148th, San Diego’s Brandon Hughes, signed for $1.93 million and a signing bonus of $186,650.

Mark Gaughan

So can we say $1.935M with a bonus of $189,450? :-)

PFT discussing the Bills contracts situation and the lack of time remaining…

Our advice? Brew some coffee. And put some whiskey in it.

A stupid question that could prob be answered by some research, but...

Im lazy. I was wondering how to cut and paste in blue to show it is someone else’s quote?

Time to stop dragging your feet OBD. There are perameters in place for some of our picks, so there’s no reason they should be waiting until the day or two before camp to get these done.

I understand Maybin and Wood not getting done anytime soon, but the others shouldn’t have to be last minute…

Why can’t the Bills try getting the ball rolling instead of waiting on other teams to sign their picks???

I don’t think thats the case – they could be working on these contracts all along. Let it play out – plus – we’re not even close to the only team that does this. Some teams are faster than others – but i’m sure there’s a logical explanation to it all.

That being said – I wish they’d hurry up.
