It's official - 2010 draft moves to prime time
Per PFT, the 2010 draft will begin on Thursday night with the first round, rounds two and three on Friday night, and finish Saturday morning.
A sad, sad turn of events for my second favorite sports weekend of the whole year.

dont like it
dont like change. haha no seriously i thought they had it right two years ago, i didnt like this years change, now they are just dragging it out as a marketing tool. i dont think it will have any impact on the draft itself tho.
Bills make me wanna SHOUT!
ummmmmmmmmmmmmmm
they also have screwed the west coast workers out of seeing it……the new sched will have it start at 430 on thursday…. i thought goodell said he was trying to make it more accessible to fans, not less.

Don't think it will work well
I understand the reasoning for the NFL Draft going primetime (more viewership) and it makes sense on its face, but from a practical standpoint, I think it will backfire. First of all, how many viewers does the NFL think its going to gain by moving the first round from Saturday to Friday? I think it’s fair to say that most people who already watch the draft, would do so regardless – even if it were on a 3:00 a.m. – because they (and I include myself in this group) are the hardcore fans. So you have to ask yourself, what difference does Friday night make for the casual viewer as opposed to Saturday afternoon? I think a valid argument could be made that the average NFL fan would actually have more going on Friday after work as opposed to a Saturday afternoon in the early spring.
Second, even if the draft does net an initial increase in viewereship, there is a risk that viewership overall will be comparable to the current format, or even less. Think about it. What keeps you from watching after your team picks? Well for most people, it’s the anticipation of your team’s next pick. With rounds 1 and 2 on the same day, most teams are likely to have at least two picks. When the team makes it’s first selection, they start to get excited about the next one. Fans are in it for the long haul. Typically, teams only have one pick in the first round. By having round 1on it’s own day, the NFL risks the possibility of a mass exodus of fans departing as soon as their team makes their pick (e.g. a group of 20-something guys sit around, have a few beers at their buddy’s place and then as soon as their team makes a selection, it’s off to the bars!).
Finally, in it’s current format (or I should say former, now), the draft is split up into two days, but Day 1 is where all the excitement is at. Day 2 is preserved – at least viewership wise – for the diehards. Now that the NFL has spread the draft out over three days, Day 3 is going to become even more insignificant. In addition, they risk losing some off the allure of rounds 2 and 3. When rounds 2 and 3 are tied to the first round, they piggyback off of round 1’s success. Will they be as successful as a stand alone or will they become an afterthought like the later rounds have become?
Overall, I think this will backfire on the NFL and we will see a return to the current format.

Well, the plan is to have the first round on thursday night. Thursday, being the biggest TV night of the week from a ratings standpoint and moving it from early/mid afternoon to primetime will definitely add viewers.
The 2nd and 3rd round are now on friday night. How many people actually sit around all day Saturday and are still paying any attention in the 2nd round? The diehards are the only ones left, but now people will tune in on friday night specifically for that 2nd round. After the slow process that is the first round, waiting an entire day should refresh the viewers’ interst.
And saturday afternoon should pull in more viewers for the last 4 rounds of the draft then a sunday afternoon would. Less family stuff going on and less golf being played. After a week of work, people tend to sit around on saturdays and after a day of rest, go out and do things on sundays.
I totally get the logic from the NFL’s point of view.
thanks for the correction...
I read thursday night, but I was thinking friday when I wrote. I think the underlying premise is still the same – although I do admit that a first round on Thursday night is far better than a first round on Friday night. I still think you have the same problems with rounds 2 and 3 though. Just too much going on Friday nights.

THIS SUCKS!!!!
I used to enjoy getting my wife to leave for the weekend so I can veg in my boxers, and gorge myself on beer, steak, and nachos, while watching the draft. This just ruins the whole thing.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
Agreed.....enough to make you want to put your pants back on ?????

I’m freaking out. The Office is on Thursday nights. I suppose if the draft doesn’t upset the Lost schedule, I’ll find a way to cope…

Yeah, seems like an easy solution. You can always watch things online these days too.
The question becomes, should you waste a sick or vacation day on that friday to recover from booze/start early on friday, catch up on TV and blog about what happened and what you hope happens next? That’s a lot to cover on friday if you’ve gotta work too!

Of course you do! It will be like my own holiday.

Yeah, without a doubt. You just need to be careful with your use of sick/vacation days. I mean, two consecutive days in March for the first two days of March Madness, and now a Friday in April during the draft – my boss might actually catch on. Plus, now I’m down 3 sick/vacation days before we hit May.

Isn’t the season of The Office and other shows over by the end of April?

pretty much ruins my draft weekend ritual
the draft is usually the only thing good on tv that sunday, so it stays on espn the whole day. i also hate that last years draft was on nfl network and espn, so dumb.
terrible idea that ruins the draft
What makes the draft so enjoyable is getting your diehard football fan friends over for beer grilling and a day of football. With it broken up into 3 days, rather nights, the allure is gone and so is the idea of a day dedicated to sports. Boo. Three days means a lot of viewers will miss at least one. I know I’ll tune in for all three but a lot of people will simply not be able to have three free nights in a row for the draft. Boo.

your right, and thats BS because we give them that dollar
This is the one thing I don’t like that ESPN has done, and fantasy football. Its mainstreamed the NFL to the point that it can get by well on profits from part time fans who like the idea of watching football rather than actually enjoying watching football.

QUESTION . . .
Let me preface by saying I respect every sports fan opinion. Honestly, how is the NFL draft your second favorite sports weekend of the year? No offense my fellow Buffalonian, but there are more than just a couple weekends that top the NFL draft. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the NFL draft but dude, c’mon. AFC / NFC Championship weekend, SuperBowl, Wild Card, Divisional, The Masters, US Open, British Open, PGA Championship, any random NHL playoffs weekend, any weekend of March Madness. Which of these is your favorite?
Anyway. Can you blame the NFL? For a league that bogarts the majority of ESPN broadcast time and has more money than God, why the hell would they not try and make a move to making the draft prime time and essentially accessible to everyone? The NFL will get increased viewers, more money off “draft day” merchandise, increased exposure of future NFL stars, etc. etc. etc. etc.
I agree that, yes it sucks in a certain way. For true NFL and NCAA fans, the draft is a huge deal. We understand the importance of not only each individual pick for NFL teams but seeing beloved and hated former college players make the next step.
Let’s be serious everyone, the NFL would be absolutely insane to not make such a move.

When I read that I too though “what about every weekend in the fall when the Bills are playing”. But i get his point, the draft is amazing.

For the same reason that you think those other weekends are better – because it’s an extremely subjective opinion. For me, it’s the opening weekend of march madness, then NFL draft weekend, then maybe championship weekend. The problem with every other weekend that you listed is that they are highly dependent on the team(s)/player(s) involved. The first weekend of march madness and the NFL draft always deliver. Not to mention, they are perfect for sitting on the couch all day long, drinking unnecessary amounts of alcohol, and ordering take out for multiple days in a row.
And yes, I can blame the NFL. For many of the reasons that you listed. Plus, by moving this to primetime, they could be making a large mistake: They are risking alienating their most loyal fans in order to reach a broader audience. This is exactly what they did with the Super Bowl. The Super Bowl is now less about football and more about “the show.” Of course, the big issue being that everyone watches the Super Bowl, only a dedicated segment of the population watch the draft. By placing it on Thursday night, they are going head-to-head with other primetime shows. This move might actually backfire in that it more difficult for the loyal fan to get granted tv access by a household with other shows on.
Besides, like you said, they have “more money than God.” For once, it would be nice to see them make a decision that is in the best interest of the fan…not the best interest of their bottom line.

Exactly.
Indeed
Those are my two favorite weekends of the year. The first weekend of March Madness is so awesome. I’m completely useless for 4 straight days and I absolutely love it.

Yup. I’ll throw the fantasy draft with my friends in and have what are easily my three favorite weekends of the year. Nothing else even comes close. I’ll actually take the first sunday of the NFL or opening day (the real opening day, not some random series) of MLB over an NFL playoff weekend too. I watch the games, but for some reason (maybe I’m burnt out, bitter about the Bills, focusing on the Sabres or Cuse basketball) I never really get into the NFL playoffs.
I watch the NFL playoffs, but never really care about the games. If I miss a game or two of the playoffs, I really don’t care. In the regular season, if I miss one of the Thursday night games I get kind of upset. That’s probably due to the fantasy implications, but it’s still a good indication of how I feel about the playoffs. It doesn’t help that the Bills have no bearing on the playoffs. That’s the biggest reason I couldn’t care less about what happens in the playoffs.
I love opening weekend in the NFL. That’s one of my top 5 sporting events of the year, and probably 3rd after March Madness and NFL draft weekend….

Since the Draft is the only one the Bills are ever a part of, I think that’s why we all love it so much.

Bigger Audience?
Is there really a bigger audience for the draft than what already watches it? I can’t believe there are really that many more people who care to watch that aren’t already watching it. I DO NOT like splitting up rounds 1 and 2. Not really sure why you would put it over 3 days……I don’t think I can really pay attention for that long…or have my wife allow me to get away with paying attention for that long.

Yeah exactly the points I tried to make above. The draft isn’t the Super Bowl. I really think the NFL is gonna be sadly mistaken if they think they’re going to get the casual fan/observer to watch the draft simply because it’s now on primetime. And, I think men (the predominant watchers of sports) are less likely to get “permission” to watch the draft when Grey’s Anatomy is on.

Really, you need to ask?
I just plan on telling her that I’m watching the draft……
Ooops…..sorry honey, no I didn’t know you were behind me. I was only kidding. Of course I like Grey’s anatomy. I agree, the draft is stupid. Yes dear.

No biggie. I think you actually explained it better than I did.

Well I don’t because I don’t live with my girlfriend, but my guess is that many guys might get some push-back from their significant others.

This was me pretending my wife watched me write that I was going to tell her instead of ask her and then my reaction. I wasn’t trying to make fun of you, I was making fun of us whipped married guys. Actually, most of us will watch it, but we’ll have to trade it for a weekend of backbreaking yardwork. One day was a hard enough sell…….man….I’m going to have to save up favors for this one.
