2009 Bills Training Camp: Day One Open Thread

It's here, folks - the Buffalo Bills are set to take the field for their first practice of 2009 training camp in one hours' time.  This is an open thread for the day's events.  Our very own MattRichWarren will be attending both practices today (tweeting us updates from the stands), and we'll be (remotely, unfortunately in most cases) keeping up with the prevailing story lines of the day.

Updates will appear after the jump throughout the morning.  From what we've been able to gather, the Bills will be practicing without at least their top four rookies (Aaron Maybin, Eric Wood, Jairus Byrd, Andy Levitre), and Shawn Nelson may join that group, as he has not yet actually signed the deal he agreed to yesterday.

Star-divide

7:15 AM: First update of the day, and it's a short one.  As mentioned, Matt's on Twitter, so if you're looking for updates directly from the source, follow him there.  Make sure to give Matt some love for the live-from-camp updates! We also will be able to provide you exclusive photos (again taken from the stands) thanks to the generosity of Atlanta Bills Backer (and fan of Rumblings) David Selby.

The players had a 7:00 meeting this morning, then they hit the field at 8:30 for the first of two practices.

8:49 AM: Matt's first update indicates that WR James Hardy is on the field as the Bills begin practice.  The same can't be said for LB John DiGiorgio, who we're hearing may be mulling season-ending surgery on his knee.

9:33 AM: MRW reports that James Hardy did not run or stretch at the beginning of the practice; looks like his rehab continues (as expected).  Rookie TE Shawn Nelson is not practicing this morning, either, despite reports that a deal is in place.  He may have just had a travel issue considering how late in the day the deal was agreed upon. [Chris Brown]

9:42 AM: In seven-on-seven work, T.O. makes his first "great" catch of the season.

11:09 AM: With Andy Levitre and Eric Wood still unsigned, Kirk Chambers and Seth McKinney filled in at left and right guard, respectively.

This morning's practice was padless, and has now concluded.  Next practice is this afternoon, with two more coming tomorrow (which will bring two-a-days to an end in Buffalo).

4:27 PM: Apologies, folks, for the lack of updates this afternoon.  Found myself unexpectedly away from the computer.  Matt has been dutifully tweeting up a storm, however, so we'll do a big summary in one afternoon update:

+ TE Shawn Nelson officially signed his contract today and hit the practice field this afternoon after missing only one practice.

+ Matt describes QB Trent Edwards as being "off" and slightly out of sync, consistently throwing poor balls to any receiver not named Owens (who he hit with a 50-yard bomb in 7-on-7 work).  CB Leodis McKelvin picked off an Edwards pass, which he promptly returned for a touchdown.  S Donte Whitner also intercepted an Edwards pass intended for Owens.

+ Buffalo's backup quarterbacks aren't faring much better.  Matt describes Gibran Hamdan as just "bad." Ryan Fitzpatrick has been better, but MLB Paul Posluszny did have a pick-six on him in the afternoon workout.

+ The competition at tight end appears to be wide open, with both Derek Schouman and Derek Fine splitting first-team reps.

+ DT Marcus Stroud left practice "dinged", according to Matt, with what appears to be a gimpy hamstring.  DE Ryan Denney was also briefly injured, but returned to action quickly.

Hopefully, Jim Overdorf and his staff get to work and get these deals done, because we need all of these young guys to be in there, as we’re expecting immidiate contribution by them.

Get it done today!

Any news on the Levitre or Woods contract? Are they in town?

I think getting those two signed is more important than getting Maybin or Byrd in. Maybin and Byrd are probably going to start the season as only situational palyers, but Wood and Levitre are being counted on to start from day 1.

If there’s news, you’ll hear about it here. :)

BTW, if you click that picture above, you can browse some AP photos of the players moving in yesterday. I’m sure there will be more once practices get going…

First update, as noted in the post: John DiGiorgio is not on the field. James Hardy is.

Here we’ve been talking all season about replacing Ellison at SAM. Who will replace DiGi as the reserve MLB if he has to have season-ending surgery?

Thanks. Well, looks like we may be able to keep Pat Thomas AND have someone else (Nic Harris, Palmer, Bowen) challenge/backup Ellison.

i view digi as a reserve everything LB, not just MLB – particularly with ellison starting. i’m kind of scared to think of all those new players with so little game experience getting in instead.

Contract Issues

I could see the Levitre/Woods contract situation getting a little dicey. Let’s call a spade a spade, guards just don’t get that much respect in the league and I can’t think of a position (sans kickers/punters) whom receive less pay.

I wonder if Woods will try to leverage his “center” position for more money. Or will these guys try to hold out until the bills cave and offer them money for their position draft (pick above + pick below divided by 2 kinda thing).

Time will tell, but I could see the bills not wanting to pay a premium for a non-premium position player.

Just wondering, and it’s about something really, really, petty. I’m a little surprised the logo in the middle of field wasn’t erased, or even had a small Bills logo paintged there.

Wasn't Wilhem cut by San Deigo

I don’t know about him as a starter, but he would add some experience as a backup. He has been in the playoffs for the past couple of years. You can never have too many guys like that on your roster.

Let's Wait

There will be alot of things happening in the next four weeks. I had the same thoughts but feel better waiting it out. I am still looking for a trade with Seattle for Aaron Curry after he holds out through all of training camp. Wishful thinking and doesn’t help our O-Line much, But wouldn’t that be something. Realistically, we will probably wait until we have significant injury in one position before anything happens. Key word is significant.

More updates from camp (as seen in post): with Levitre/Wood out, Chambers @ LG, McKinney @ RG. Pretty uneventful practice from what I’m hearing.

When’s the second practice? Whitner says 1, Moorman says 2:15.

You got any overall impressions? How was the pace? Were they sharp?

My ticket says 2:25.

From what I noticed everybody looked sharp. Only a couple dropped passes by fringe WRs and one by Fine. Schouman slipped once.

Pace was quick. Five to fifteen minutes and then moved on to something else. They got through a lot of progressions today and it was half individual position stuff and 7 on 7 or 11 on 11.

Yeah.

He didn’t stretch or do any moving other than catching and throwing balls.

Is it a rule?

That all NFL players must drive black vehicles?

Playoffs or Busted!!!!!!!!!!!

by JTM1023 on Jul 25, 2009 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

The only color a black vehicle is cheaper on insurance than is red. Black is the hardest vehicle color to see, and therefore much more likely to be in an accident. White vehicles are the cheapest to insure, because they can be seen in a glance so much more readily.

Here's the skinny...

Nothing really big happened. Every time T.O. caught a ball this lady stood up and yelled. I was mostly around the defense this morning watching the linebackers for Digiorgio and Nic Harris.

Josh Reed had a couple nice grabs and Fitzpatrick threw one that hit Reed in the chest so hard you could hear it around the complex.

No INTs but a fumbled snap by Edwards.

If you have specifics you want to know about during camp, let Brian know and he can get a hold of me.

Probably his publicist…..by the way, how horrible is she? A guy who people think is crazy, selfish, a team killer, and greedy has a publicist? I’m pretty sure he could have earned that reputation himself. Is she the one who suggested the sit-ups in the driveway? Or crying about Tony Romo? He might as well flush the money he is paying her down the toilet.

You have to park at one of the Pittsford schools. Calkins Rd or Barker Rd MS or at Pittsford Mendon HS. Check the Bills website for directions.

I will be wearing a faded red hat and a blue BILLS shirt and be on my phone a bunch. Say hi. :-)

I don’t understand these rookies letting their agents dictate whats “in their best interests” when everything they do is so they can get a bigger cut. Hey Andy Levitre, for example, is it worth a few thousand dollars to miss out on a starting job because you didn’t get to camp in enough time to beat out the vets?? Rhetorical Question Andy.
