"Because [Schobel] wasn't there, we did not get sacks," defensive coordinator Perry Fewell said matter-of-factly Sunday morning following the Bills' first practice of the day at St. John Fisher College.

Haha – I loved the “matter of factly”.
Someone should tell him that we had a whopping ONE more sack in 2007 (24), with a fully healthy Schobel, than we did without him last year (23).

but
With the addition of Stroud, and Kawika Mitchell, Schobel surely factored more in his defensive plans, and losing him took that away. I would hope, if things go well with both Maybin AND Ellis, that Schoebel can be rotated out without losing too much production and keeping him healthier for most of the year
The Bills CAN win any game
It is statements like that that make me wonder about Fewell
No way to get sacks without Schobel. Does he really think we as fans are that stupid?

I think...
What he is trying to say is the lack of an avid pass rusher closed the doors for everybody else. Which it obviously did. Without the speed rush threat (and another guy drawing double teams) it makes it very difficult to generate pressure on the QB. Its not that Schobel is the only one that will get a sack but he certainly opens up attack on the DL as well as from the Linebackers.
Agreed.

While I’m tempted to be sarcastic and reply, “Duh…..huh?”, it seems ridiculous and oversimplistic to pin the lack of a pass rush on Schobel’s absence.
Perry, newsflash, there’s another guy on your defensive line that’s supposed to be putting pressure on opposing passers (right, K?). Try getting a little more out of him.

Questions for Mr. Fewell
What if Schobel can’t go this year, or a significant portion of it?
Are you really going to write the rest of the D an excuse if there’s no pass pressure?
Wow. Someone please tell me this quote from Perry was taken out of context.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
GAH! Make it stop. My eyes, my ears, my fingers! AHHHH
This is ridiculous, and as Joe said, we aren’t stupid here Fewell….The pass rush was as pathetic as it was in 2007 WITH Schobel in the lineup. It’s no wonder we haven’t addressed the pass rush that much over the past 2-3 years. We’ve got coaches who don’t really see what we have as a problem….

Fewell keeps on losing my confidence. I mean we are absolutly screwed if he thinks that just having Schobel back will make our pass rush so much better.
I say that we get rid of Fewell and promote Sanders. Who’s with me?

How would that be an upgrade though?

Sanders managed to coach a deffense that was as average as ours to become a top 5 in the NFL while he was in GB. Sure they crashed miserably last year, but I’m thinking that he may be able to bring more out of our guys then Fewell is… or at least not be as big of an idiot.

Maybe, maybe not.
You can’t really commend him for helping them become a good D, but look past last years failures. I’m not saying you did here, but he deserves credit and blame equally for those, I’d say.
I’m trying to remember what D Green Bay under him exactly. I’m guessing it was a standard 4-3 because I can’t really remember anything else they have been doing there. I just hope his work with the DL translates to more effective stunts, rushes and blitzes….

I’m pretty sure that it was a standard 4-3. But GB did have a much stronger DL then us when they were successful (thinking edge rushers here). I love that he’s a DL specialist too, because I personally think that to have a good D it all starts on the DL.
That being said, what he did last year does worry me a bit, but if he does a good job with the DL this year, then I’d see a promotion as a serious possibility (if we get rid of the other coachs I mean).

As much as I’m bashing Fewell here, the Bills shouldn’t replace him because of one stupid quote. Anyone who replaces him had better be an upgrade over what we have now, or the move doesn’t make sense whatsoever.

Oh I totally agree. And I don’t want him replaced because of one stupid quote. I’ve wanted him replaced for a while now.
While I think that we have the right players for an effective zone based deffence, I just don’t like how he uses them. I think that we could be a lot better considering the players that we have.

A good pass rush will make this defense look quite a bit better. While I scratch my head over all the DB’s selected in the past few years, I don’t think that it’s really fair to Perry to lay it all on him, as far as what he’s been asked to work with at the DE position. I actually think he’s done a pretty good job as D-coord. He just needs that other DE (opposite Schobel) to apply more pressure, and this D will start going places.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
I would have to think that the drafting of all the DB’s also has something to do with Fewell. I mean he would at the very least have significant input on which positions he wants to draft higher/more often. I don’t think that the numerous amount of DB’s falls souly on DJ, Fewell has to have something to do with it. So for me, even if Fewell didn’t have much to work with as for DE’s, it’s partially his fault.

How is Kelsey’s & Denney’s non-production in the sack department Fewell’s fault? He was saddled with them from the day he stepped in the door.
I not defending Fewell, but I object to firing a coach when the players are not making plays.
Yes, Fewell can recommend getting a certain player on draft day, but the final decision is not up to him. I think we tend to blame coaches a little too much for this, and the personnel/scouting department not enough.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
I wasn’t saying that Kelsey’s and Denney’s lack of productions were his fault. I’m just saying that a good deffencive coach would/should have seen that as a severe weakness much sooner then he did and pushed to draft accordingly.
I think it’s great that we drafted Maybin this year and think that he’ll be a stud in this league. But with all honesty, shouldn’t the high round DE draft pick (first or second round) have happened 2 years ago? (full disclosure, I don’t know how long Fewell has been with us, and I’m just assuming that it’s been the same amount of time as DJ). So for him to take so long to identify the DE position as a big problem on our team show an increadible lack of foresight.

Fewell probably has been pushing since 2007 for upgrades to the DE position. But again, he’s not pulling the trigger on draft day. We will probably never know what has transpired behind the scenes at OBD, as far as Fewell’s pushing to get better at DE. Just because we haven’t heard that he has publicly doesn’t mean he hasn’t been actively pushing for it. Give the guy a little credit – he knows he needs a strong pass rush for his defense to succeed. He just hasn’t gotten that from his boss until this year. His boss apparently saw other areas that needed to be filled first.
Get the Bills back to the big game!
I say that we get rid of Fewell and promote Sanders. Who’s with me?
I am not against it, but I don’t think Juaron will do anything (must profound statement ever, right?) We are going to have to wait and see if Juaron gets canned. Also, since we are replacing coaches, lets get one that wants to run a 3-4.

Thats what I ment. If Jauron get canned, then get rid of Fwell too and promote Sanders. Get rid of that zone based deffence and replace it with a stadard 4-3 under Sanders. On that same note, if the Offence does well enough to win games and keep DJ’s job, but the deffence stinks, then fire Fewell (see above for the rest).
To me the only way that Fewell should keep his job at the end of the year is if our zone based deffense actually does well (top 10-12 of the league) and actually gets the amount of turnovers that a zone based deffense should.
Lets face it guys, we call our D a zone based D, but it hasn`t been producin like one. Not even close.

Stroud Factor
Remember – Stroud wasn’t part of the club in 2007. The o-line just concentrated basically on Schobel. Last year he was hurt so opposing teams didn’t have to worry about pretty much anyone off the edge.
This year Schobel and Stroud will be on the field together hopefully all year long. At a minimum we now have 2 guys that demand attention. 3 if Ellis/Maybin step it up.
While I get that we only had 1 less sack than 2007 – the Stroud factor should be included in this discussion I think.
I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying
I really like Schobel, but we can’t expect his golden years with his age. The problem last year was not only Schobel absence, but our DE depth’s inability to make others QB fell at least little worried. As coach, Perry should know a winning team is not only a few talented players, but a team with deep depth who can step up when they need to.
