Jairus Byrd, where art thou?
41. New England (fr. GB) - CB Darius Butler, UCONN - Signed (4-years, $4.325M; $2.735M guaranteed)
42. Buffalo - CB, Jairus Byrd, Oregon
43. Carolina (fr. SF) - DE, Everette Brown, Florida State - Signed (4-years, $4.3M; $2.685M guaranteed)
Really, what is the hold up here? The parameters have been in place for a few days now. In fact, with Butler's signing a while ago, this could have been done soon after. The fact that Byrd is still unsigned is incredibly ridiculous at this point.
Why is the team not offering 4 years, $4.13M, $2.71M guaranteed to split the difference between the two picks, and if they are, why in the world is Byrd/agent not signing the deal? This is silly if they are haggling over something like $15K or something.
This might not be a big deal quite yet, but the fact that Byrd hasn't had one single practice with the Bills since he missed all of the OTA's, means he is likely incredibly behind. Each practice he misses means it's more and more likely that he won't be able to contribute right away. It also means we might have to keep a guy like Ko Simpson when we normally wouldn't simply because we need him as a backup. I'm more upset about this one than about Maybin potentially being out for a while simply because of how much Byrd has missed and how the outline for his deal is in place.
Anybody else a little peeved about this one?

I am, it really doesn’t make any sense. You make a good point about him falling farther and farther behind after missing OTAs and I agree that its vital that he gets into camp soon, maybe even more vital then Maybin or Wood. It also worries me that I haven’t seen anything suggesting a deal is close (it seems like Wood is likely to be the next one to sign).
Lets hope this gets taken care of soon.

Like I said in another post
I was never in favor of the Byrd pick. This type of behavior is not helping. Apparently he is a greedy ball hawk.

We have no idea what is causing this, lets find out before we condemn him.

Very true....
but with the parameters in place, it’s pretty crazy. If Byrd had been able to participate in all the OTA’s, it wouldn’t be as big of a deal, but he should be pushing his agent to get this done NOW so he doesn’t miss more time….Maybe he is, who knows.

You can’t blame the players in holdouts… they’re literally just sitting around waiting, and when they call their agents to speed things along, they get an “OK, Jairus,” and business continues as usual.

Kry relayed to me that when he talked to Byrd, Jarious got a phone call and was talking to someone, and he became pretty animated about not being signed. I don’t think this is Jarious’s doing.
No night spent pantsless is a wasted night.
good to know
It is important to remember that players hire and can fire their agents if they are not happy with the job they are doing.

It IRKS me not everyone is signed by now
If a rookie has a chance to compete for a starting spot, he needs to be in camp on time!!!!
Remember though, Whitner was a hold-out as well (i think 8 days) and missed OTA’s because of Ohio states academic schedule. And he ended up starting, but that team was not as talented as our current one(even though it isnt that much more talented).
Wood not in camp Irks me the most. WE needed him and Levitre on time!
How many years can we go without making the playoffs...eventually the odds go in your favor.........right?!?!?
Whitner wasn’t supposed to start right away, but when Matt Bowen got injured he came in…That happened early in week 1 against the Pats that year.
I think.

I'm peeved
If only because it’s pointless for Byrd to be unsigned at this point. I’m perfectly fine with a Scott/Whitner pairing, but I don’t see what ANY pick in this price range has to gain by not signing. $2.7M invested wisely is easily enough money to never work again, so even suffering a career-ending injury on the first play, a player need not have any real financial worries. Holding out for more money? Forget about it. Unless you’re a high first rounder, the real money is when you make it to UFA. And if you’re a superstar, that rookie contract is getting reworked. Unless you’re Jason Peters, I guess.
$2.7Million
that amount equals a salary of $50,000 for 54 years.
Not bad and and definitely could be better with the right investments.

It’s also worth pointing out that Cleveland had no problem getting Alex Mack signed. I have no clue how an NFL organization can be incapable of getting late first and second round picks into camp on time.
It’s not that these guys missing a few days is a big deal in the long run of things. It’s just that these “holdouts” are part of a laundry list of things that make this organization look like amateurs compared to successful NFL teams.

Even beyond that….with camp opening up early, they should have been pushing for these signings to get done early. They couldn’t even get a 4th rounder in on time…

A lot of it has to do with agents. A lot of them like to sit around and wait for the best deal possible. It’s tough for teams to negotiate when agents are stubbornly patient.

this is
pretty dumb, but as long as he shows up this week I really don’t have many issues….but the fact he missed all those OTA’s, and they want him to contribute it just doesn’t seem likely at this point

If this is the reason why Ko Simpson makes the roster I will throw-up. I have ranted many times about my distaste for Simpson’s play so I will spare all of you. I know many people were shocked/disappointed with the Byrd pick initially but I was not. As soon as it was revealed that they were going to move this collegiate ball hawk to safety I danced a jig a la Bruce Willi in The Last Boy Scout. However, it’s pretty difficult to become the back end playmaker that this defense has lacked for years if you can’t even get onto the practice field.

K, I think you meant the offer should be $4.31M base, $2.7M guaranteed.
Jairus, fire the agent!
Get the Bills back to the big game!
Indeed, I did!

It’s really disappointing for to see Jairus Byrd hold out, because I really like his play on the field, but him not being here is making it less and less likely he’ll be a factor on defense at all in 2009. I may be stretching it, but I just don’t get in my idealistic head why a player like Byrd, who had a very good chance at becoming a starter almost from day one, decides to fight for a couple of extra thousand dollars instead of getting to camp and trying to become the best and most well-prepared player he can be.
Either the players are getting more and more stupid/greedy or else the agents are getting more and more powerful. I happen to believe it’s a matter of the last, but I’m still very disappointed in these guys.

The competitiion
Training camp is all about competition for starting and back up support. Thats why I want to see him in there. I want to see Whitner play with the kid. They need to work together. Scott needs to be pushed more and don’t forget Wendling, Wilson and the above mentioned Simpson. Get the kid in, let him get his timing down. I expect an improvement for Whitner as well when all is said and done.
He's represented by dick head EUGENE PARKER
Who of course is giving everyone the silent treatment. After what this jerkoff pulled with Peters I would have a hard time holding back from beating this guy senseless.
Let Byrd sign a fair deal and be done with it.
