Making a Case for McCargo
Is John McCargo just another draft bust for the Bills? Maybe, maybe not. For a first round selection he hasn't done "diddly poo" (Jim Mora) since he's gotten here. Based on flashes of greatness I saw in 2007 and recent news reports, I believe John McCargo will have a big impact in Buffalo's defense next year.
What J-Mac did in 2007:
• Tied for third on the team with seven tackles for loss.
• Registered first career sack in Week 1 vs. Den. (9/9)… Took down Jay Cutler for a loss of five yards
• Recorded first career forced fumble and fumble recovery at NE (9/23) during a Tom Brady rush on a goal-to-go situation in the second quarter
• Made a key tackle for loss on Reuben Droughns on a fourth-and-goal rush from the one-yard line in the third quarter vs. NYG (12/23)
My take on his 2007 season:
McCargo clearly showed he has the speed and quickness Buffalo needs for its defensive scheme. He has the ability to slip past offensive guards. If you watch the sack against Cutler and the Key tackle on Reuben Droghns, you can see why he was a 1st round pick.
Check out the Cutler sack here: http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d802340f8/Bills-Defense-Highlight-WK-1-vs-Broncos-2007
I can't find the video on the other plays.
So why hasn't he been able to be consistent? Two things, injuries and work ethic. Apparantly both those things are fixed now according to DJ and Perry Fewell.
- Quote from Perry Fewell: "We've seen a big attitude change in him in his work habits, his eating habits, his body looks better, his desire to be a good football player."
- Quote from DJ: "The fact that he reverted back to us turns out to be a very positive thing. He's had a great attitude, we've always liked him, and now we are hoping to get out of him what we believe is there."
- "McCargo came to camp this summer 100 percent healthy, and he's also about 10 to 12 pounds lighter than he was last year, tipping the scales right around 303"
All these quotes are from http://www.democratandchronicle.com/article/20090728/SPORTS03/907280312/1007/SPORTS
J-Mac is going to be in the rotation, so we should all be rooting for him. Stroud, Williams, Johnson, and McCargo.

I think I speak for a lot of us when I say we want him to be successful, very successful.
He has flashed signs of playmaking ability which you point out – but he hasn’t been consistent yet. The only reason why anyone would want him off the team is because of lack of production. He’s got good size and skills – if he can get motivated and play lights out he will succeed and become a good player.
But I think most of us want him to succeed and become a great player. Not only for our organization but his sake as well. I’m sure there would be great personal satisifaction if he became an elite DT when a lot of people were calling him a bust.
I am so clever that sometimes I don’t understand a single word of what I am saying

Nice Write Up
I root for anyone the Bills put on the field. I’m not a TO fan, for example, but sincerely hope that he catches 80+ balls for 1500+ yards and 15+ TDs. While I’ve never had anything against McCargo (I don’t think he does sit ups in his driveway and he didn’t whine about being supplanted by Kyle Williams.) he’s been a bust. He can change that with a good year and I hope he does. Earning more playing time and being more consistent will help him get a good second contract, whether it is with the Bills or someone else.

Good post
Earning more playing time and being more consistent will help him get a good second contract, whether it is with the Bills or someone else.
but that is what scares me the most. What is his motivation? Has he really turned over a new leaf and gets it, or has he realized he needs a new contract? What happens after he signs it? Will he still be motivated? I hope he has a monster year and the Bills get some sucker to give us a 2nd round pick for him. I don’t see him as having the motivation to perform at a high level over the course of several seasons.

I hope McCargo is motivated by greed and that he has a monster season. It will then fall to OBD to decide whether it was a contract year fluke or the start of an excellent career at DT. We should be so lucky to have McCargo put that question on OBD’s plate.

We need a rush. Maybe McCargo can be part of the solution this year.
With a reported body makeover, he should be more… adroit.

did you see those pictures of him working out over the summer? he looked like a pudgy middle-schooler compared to how totally ripped those dudes were.
that said, anything’s better than his contributions last year, so i can’t wait to see if he can piece it together this year.

One of These Days
Thanks for the stat line from 2007. Not bad for a second year player playing in reserve capacity. Injuries have been devestating for this team in recent years, manily to our draftees. To name a few, McCargo, Loosman, Poz, Ellis, Bowen and Youboty. This can hamper their developments. We don’t need anymore of this. Maybe last year was a player Vs coach thing. As “K” mentioned reinforcements would of already been here if OBD didn’t have the confidence in him as our best choice. Every comment I have read regarding John can be defended or supported with equal enthusiasm. I know this much. What a story it will be if this kid steps up after popping Brady and does a One of these days, Pow right in the Kisser moves.

I think everyone not only Wants McCargo to succeed, but this team Needs him to succeed. The biggest problem with our defense last year was the run defense (mostly shown on long drives and late in games) and our pass rush. With McCargo’s ineffectiveness and then injury, it left the Bills with an incomplete and/or inept rotation at DT which is crucial to a successful defense. Looking back at the great defenses of the last few years, the things I remember is a deep rotation at d-line. In the Giants Super Bowl run, they had so many defensive linemen contributing it almost seemed unfair that they had so much talent. The problem is that Stroud and Williams (and the rest of the d-line for that matter) wore out last season in games and as the season wore on. McCargo’s health and ability to contribute are the one of the biggest factors I believe in this defense this season.

Peria Jerry
I think the Bills would have drafted Peria Jerry if they did not have confidence in McCargo. He was the DT from Ole Miss that went 24th to the Falcons

so you are saying that because they
took Wood at #28 instead of a DT that it means they have confidence in McCargo? Wow!!!!! As much as I wanted the Bills to draft a DT, I can’t fault them for filling the need on the O-line over replacing their #4 DT.

As much as I would have loved to see another D-lineman or three...
…coming our way through the draft, I think they listened to Sean Kugler’s heated and continual rants. Looked at the 36 or 38 sacks from last year (up from 28 in 2007), the mess that Peters presented, the outmanned centers, and decided to start over.
For the first time since 1961, the Bills are starting 5 different offensive linemen in all five positions, likely including two rooks. It was the right thing to do.
by Defensewinsgames on Jul 29, 2009 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think that’s half true. Buffalo wanted to bring Peters back. They offered him a contract that was supposedly market value. Obviously they had grown tired of Dock and the centers needed to be replaced. If Buffalo could have gotten Peters back on a reasonable contract, the ideal line would have been Peters, rookie, Hang, Butler, Walker. Maybe Buffalo could still get Wood in the 2nd round, or maybe it would have still been Levitre or even Unger. I don’t think they wanted to completely rehaul the line even though they knew it was going to be a priority. I think Peters didn’t give them a choice, but to find three new starters and Buffalo couldn’t find a LT they liked better than Walker and everything kind of fell like dominoes.

Wood at #28 instead of a DT that it means they have confidence in McCargo?
More confidence than they have in Kirk Chambers or Seth McKinney.
by buffaloboy90 on Jul 30, 2009 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not the same situation. McCargo is not expected to be a starter anymore.
The Bills drafted Wood and maybe Levitre to start this year because they knew Chambers and maybe McKinney were nothing more than swing guys or emergency backups if Wood or Levitre didn’t pan out as expected.

I never really understood why people got so down on McCargo last year. I think people’s high hopes entering training camp and his first round draft status got fans so excited, that it was extra dissapointing when he was a healthy scratch and struggled with injuries. But like you point out, the player we saw in 2007 was pretty good.
McCargo isn’t much of a pass rusher. The sack against Cutler that you link shows some motor and some athleticism, but it doesn’t really show pass rushing ability.
Here’s a 1/2 sack that he ahd against Philly.
http://www.nfl.com/videos/nfl-game-highlights/09000d5d805a1164/Bills-Defense-Highlight-WK-17-vs-Eagles-2007
That’s some pass rushing right there. But McCargo isn’t great at it. He only had a half a sack in his Junior and Sophomore season combined. He also won’t get the opportunity to rush the passer here. I doubt the coaches think that McCargo is a better player to have in the game on pass downs then any of the other guys on the roster.
McCargo’s most likely impact could be an indirect one. Buffalo needs to rotate all of it’s defensive lineman more. If McCargo could get on the field for 20-30% of plays, then Williams and Stroud are better. Stroud especially is a guy who Buffalo needs on the field less. If Spencer Johnson can come in for Stroud on obvious pass downs and McCargo can rotate in for Stroud, Williams and Johnson on 1st and 2nd downs then everybody can stay fresh. McCargo could also make an impact on short yardage where Buffalo puts 3 DTs on the field at once. I’d much rather have McCargo out there then Johnson on those plays.

You have convinced me that McCargo isn't a total Bust
So much insight on this player. The stat line from 2007 is supportive in defending him. I guess it is just the fact we grabbed him so early and the rewards have been slowly trickling in. Regardless of where the player was selected in most cases it does take a few years to solidify a players potential. Factor in the nagging injury and missed practices, games and experience it does justify a slow progression. If the trade to the colts was an attempt to salvage something from the first three years it still would of been a late round pick. In which a DT could of been drafted and a potential project along with the current roster of projects. McCargo is going to be our guy filling the gaps for Stroud and Williams, along with Spencer. Just like the O-Line we need to keep these guys confidence focused to become one solid unit regardless of reps and depth. Lets just get these guys healthy and keep them there.
