2009 Bills Training Camp: Day Five Open Thread
The rain is falling in Pittsford, New York, but the Buffalo Bills will still be taking the field for today's scheduled practice. Rookie offensive guard Eric Wood - who reportedly agreed to terms on a contract Tuesday night - will not be in attendance, as Wood's agent is reviewing the contract's language. Bills COO/GM Russ Brandon confirmed to ESPN.com's Tim Graham that a tentative deal has, however, been negotiated; Brandon expects Wood in camp on Thursday. Meanwhile, the word "close" is still being used to describe a potential signing of second-round FS Jairus Byrd.
Our de facto camp reporter, MattRichWarren, is currently stuffed in traffic, but will be reporting to this afternoon's practice. David Selby, photographer extraordinaire, will be on hand as well, at least initially. We'll keep you updated.
1:20 PM: Rain has stopped at Growney. Field is still slick. Seven players are sitting this one out - TE Shawn Nelson, WR Steve Johnson, WR P.K. Sam, DT Marcus Stroud, DT John McCargo, DE Copeland Bryan and S Dustin Fox. (Scratch that. Stroud is practicing. Six players are sidelined.)
1:43 PM: Starting off with run work. Chris Kelsay made a nice stop, beating Brad Butler on the play. (Here come the groans.) Andy Levitre was the first to rotate through at left guard. Marcus Buggs made a big hit on Xavier Omon running with the third-team defense at MLB.
1:45 PM: Add in two more non-participants: DT Ventrell Jenkins and DT Marcus Smith. Stroud/Williams/Johnson/Lindquist at DT today, and that's it.
1:47 PM: Drayton Florence has improved steadily throughout camp, and is impressing in one-on-one drills. WR Terrell Owens caught a deep pass from Ryan Fitzpatrick. Meanwhile, run work continues; first-unit line is struggling to get much going against Bills' run defense.
1:52 PM: It's starting to rain again a bit, steadily worsening. Punt drills aren't going too smoothly; both Leodis McKelvin, Bruce Hall and Dominic Rhodes have muffed punts. Brian Moorman, however, looks good. Bobby April's units are working on field goal blocking by having undrafted rookie kicker Danny Urrego kick soccer balls.
2:04 PM: A few lineup notes to mention. Florence is once again running as the first-team nickel back. The Bills are using a three-safety look defensively, with Ko Simpson joining Donte Whitner and Bryan Scott on the field. (Who wants to guess that this is Byrd's package?) Offensively, Fred Jackson continues to line up in the slot as a receiver.
One other note: mercifully, Ryan Fitzpatrick is looking better today. So is Gibran Hamdan, for that matter.
2:08 PM: Buffalo's starting cornerbacks are looking good (along with the secondary in general). Terrence McGee had a nice pass break-up on a pass intended for Owens. On the next play, Leodis McKelvin made an acrobatic interception falling to the ground as he defended a deep throw intended for Lee Evans. McGee then knocked a sure catch out of Owens' grasp.
2:12 PM: A few updates spruced in above, in regards to the backups (playing well), more plays from the DBs. Moving to full-squad looks now.
2:17 PM: Kirk Chambers is now taking first-team reps at left guard, but Andy Levitre has handled Kyle Williams on consecutive plays - one run and one pass. Ryan Fitzpatrick just threw an interception to an undisclosed defender. The defense is doing a lot of blitzing, particularly right up the middle. And yes - we've seen another screen pass. Everything is still no-huddle.
2:27 PM: Had a bit of a scary moment in which Terrell Owens and Donte Whitner fell to the turf hard during a jump ball. Both are OK, but Whitner was slow to get up. Both are still practicing. We're also hearing more encouraging news on the backup quarterbacks - Hamdan in particular - and the offensive line is holding up well in pass protection as well.
2:32 PM: Not camp-related, but we'll put it here anyways. Jason La Canfora reports that Eric Wood has signed his rookie contract. It's a five-year deal worth a reported maximum of $13 million.
2:42 PM: A couple of second-unit defenders are turning in nice performances. Chris Ellis continues to put in good work at both left and right end. Rookie linebacker Nic Harris just put a good lick on Marshawn Lynch. Meanwhile, Drayton Florence is stealing some of Leodis McKelvin's first-team reps opposite Terrence McGee, with Reggie Corner in the slot. Edwards and Evans are picking on poor Reggie with success.
It appears the lineup tinkering continues, as Demetrius Bell is also taking a few snaps with the first-team offensive line at left tackle. The line's pass blocking has been quite good today.
2:51 PM: We're into the latter stages of practice. Matt's headed out early. Recap coming later on this afternoon.

Soccer Balls
Because you don’t need a holder? I don’t remember them every doing that before.

Essentially.
Moorman was at the other end of the field kicking punts. He wasn’t kicking all out either. They were just practicing getting through the line and blocking the FG tries. He was just trying to get some air under it.

I don’t get it. Soccer balls are alot heavier and travel smoother through the air. Shouldn’t they be practicing with the real thing? Shouldn’t I stop questioning Bobby April’s coaching ability before I even start?

They are just trying to get a hand on the ball.
Just like a lot of drills mimic aspects of play without completely recreating them.

Kelsay's problem
has never been beating RT. He can do that, its just his burst off the line. Im not worried about Butler and I’m glad to hear Kelsay is playing well. As much hate as is there is out there for him, we need him to play well, even if it is just in run support. No one is taking his starting spot anytime soon.

Brandon Rodd!! Our best player.
Kelsay’s problem has never been beating RT.
Pardon me, but what? Kelsay has always struggled to beat his man, that’s why he’s routinely out of the play and has no impact.

I dont know if I necessarily agree with that. I think Kelsay’s problems have been applying pressure to the QB rather than getting routinely beat out of every play. Maybe any payer on the field is going to make tackles and I’m being too kind but when you watch the games on Sunday Kelsay is seen bringing down ball carriers.

If Kelsay wasn’t having trouble beating the RT, I think he’d get more than 2-3 sacks a year….

then why are we not pursing Burgess! Argh! I think we should. As per rotoworld:
Derrick Burgess was a no-show for the opening of Raiders camp on Wednesday. Burgess is in a contract year and won’t get an extension. Coach Tom Cable, who had previously indicated that Burgess won’t be a starter this year, is reportedly unhappy with the surprise holdout. Burgess is trying to force a deal, which means the Raiders could revisit talks with the Patriots.
Forget talks with the Patriots! Talks with us! He would start!

How are Butler and Walker doing?
Last night I was particularly impressed with Butler’s effort. He looks like he’s taking his new assignment and embracing it.

They both did well in pass protection. Butler got beat once to the outside by Kelsay but it may have been a stunt that I didn’t see.

i have been away for a few days
and still trying to catch up on things, but it sounds like things are going well.
Is D Bell getting any first team reps yet?
Football. Bloody Hell!!
As updated above… he took about five today.

I wonder what the deal is with Bell getting first team reps at LT?
If the glove don’t fit, it couldn’t be Whit...
Trying to speed up the learning curve
He’s not going to be a starter any time soon. They do need to make sure he is ready just in case of an injury though. Playing against 2nd and 3rd stringers won’t help him as much in that regard….

Agreed, but at this point, shouldn’t the main focus being getting Langston reps at LT? It’s not like he has an abundance of experience at the position.

D Bell needs to be starting sooner that later

Good to see Florence continue to impress. I still think it’s his job to lose, or Youboty’s.
Corner is getting beat? I’m not surprised, but he has been solid in camp thus far. Playing in pads is a different story though, so it’ll be interesting if he can get his play up to Florence/Youboty’s consistency.
I wish Stroud didn’t have to practice due to the other injuries. There’s no need for him to be testing that sore hammy on the wet field. That’s asking for a relapse.
Gotta love McGee and his consistency. We rarely hear him getting torched, and if it happens its once.
I love that Fitzpatrick is looking better, yet he’s still out there throwing INT’s. Haha

Him and McGee I wouldn’t mind seeing having a few practices off and just relaxing for a while. those guys are pretty proven and good rest would not hurt them

So I saw another screen pass guys!!! That makes two!
Ross Tucker says the Bills have been in no huddle all day. He’s right. I can’t remember a Bills huddle. I thought that was normal in training camp but apparently not. :-) THey have just been running it all the time. Literally 100%.
Still no two RB sets other than in Wildcat yesterday. Single backs only. The TE is flanking one side of the QB with RB on the other in shotgun passing formation.

This is the best news of the entire off-season! I am so excited for a new look offense with new players being utilized. Is it really so bad that Roscoe has complained his way into being used as a utility guy on offense? NO. Is it really so bad we signed a “Team Obliterator” in TO? NO. Is it so bad we waited until the 4th round to draft an athletic tight end? NO.
I am very excited, all these developments make the no-huddle very very exhilarating to imagine in action!

I hope this translates to games
rather than getting into actual games and going all conservative

if they are practicing it 100% of the time then we can expect the worst offense yet if they go conservative in real games! I think this time its the real deal my friend!

Just heard on WGR that Leodis wasn’t on the field at the end (when Drayton Flornce got reps with the first team) because he was slightly injured. Nothing serious. More to follow…

BB.com says it was a minor quad strain and McKelvin’s “not worried about it.”

I just thought they were giving Florence first team reps.
