Peter King...Just Shut Up!

He was on Mike and Mike this morning and he said that Vick would probably sign with the Bills.  Then I read his MMQB Column today and he had this to say:

I think, the more I watch football this summer, Vick's new team should be the Bills. Nothing against Trent Edwards. I just think the Bills are in it to win it this year.

I'm sick of the Vick talk already, but cringe when I think of him signing with the Bills.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.

People make posts all the time when they are ticked off about something. How many anti-Florio posts have I read? Also, on Mike and Mike, First Take, and now Monday Morning Quarteback, the Vick to Bills story was discussed. Pretty sure that’s worthy of a post.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Aug 10, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

People are so desperate to make news about Vick that they’re reaching for stories. We picked up Terrell in the offseason and have poor depth at QB. That’s why we’re being lined as an option for VIck or vice versa. Brandon saying the Bills have no interest in Vick is all I needed to hear. What they say on ESPN doesn’t mean squat to me. Same with Peter King.

Vick will sign with someone, suddenly, but it won’t be Buffalo.

Posted out of frustration I'm sure

why not focus less on a player like Vick and more on signing our #1 draft pick OBD.

by gatornation on Aug 10, 2009 12:07 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed... Maybin needs to get to camp and play in these pre-season games

for his development and to get some sense of what he can provide this year. It was good to see that Chris Ellis got a lot of playtime at DE. He needs all the time he can get too.

Regarding Vick… Although I am disgusted in him as a person for the dog fighting… I don’t think that signing him and seeing what he can do at this point is that bad of an option. I’d rather see him than Ryan Fitzpatrick running around when our OL breaks down and let’s the pass rush through. We have to hope that Trent does not get injured and miss anytime or else we are in trouble if we have to rely on Fitz.

by dabillsr1 on Aug 10, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Absolutley about Maybin...

But personally I have a hard time agreeing about Vick, and I am 100% biased because of my feelings about dogs (I used to foster mistreated dogs until I adopted an abused dog and could no longer do it). Funny thing is I believe in second chances, I’d rather see him get a second chance somewhere else, where I don’t pay for season tickets and gear. I know that’s kind of a double-standard and I absolutely don’t expect everyone to agree…and I’m not PETA crazy either, I just don’t want someone that’s done what he’s done on my team.

Besides, I believe pretty strongly in Trent and see scenarios where bringing Vick in could really make things ugly (Vick gives TO someone to lobby for if Trent doesn’t throw him the ball).

by BuffaloWill on Aug 10, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions

There has been a plethora of discussion about Maybin, his agent, the impact of Crabtree, etc.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Aug 10, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I am a true believer that if a kid wants to get to camp he can. Rumor is that Maybin has a buddy/cousin who is acting as his manager that is holding up the process. Not sure how true it is as I read it on a blog.

Crabtree and his agent have obviously lost it and are trying to re invent the wheel and should be in a straight jackets rather than used as a comparison for Maybins contract.

Kolb just went down with a knee injury in Philly

Vick would fit in well with that offense….and if no one gives Andy Reid crap about the drug ring his kids operated out of his house what are the odds he’d catch much crap about signing Vick?

Of course we could make things more challenging, Lisa, but then the stupider students would be in here complaining, furrowing their brows in a vain attempt to understand the situation--Seymour Skinner

Plus, Philly’s got a jail built into their stadium. If fans (or Vick for that matter) were to become problematic, the team’s all set to handle things in-house!

Thats a very real possibilty now, and Vick would slot in well since their Oline is used to a mobile QB

McNabb isn’t what he used to be but he is still a top 5 scrambler.

Not sure what to think

I don’t know what to think about this. On the one hand you have someone w/ bad enough judgement to run a dog fighting ring when you are (arguably) the face of the NFL and the Falcons. On the other hand, I complain endlessly about how all the Bills sell is hope (and not the actual chance of winning a bunch of games) and the solid draft, the Owens signing, and the Vick signing is at least an “all-in” by the current administration to save their necks. I’m not sure I’d want them to sign Vick, but I promise I won’t complain if they do.

by bluecollarbuffalo on Aug 10, 2009 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

That would be interesting...

Considering the history behind Vick and McNabb and Syracuse. Vick was heavily recruited by Syracuse and even came here and stayed with McNabb for a weekend. Ultimately, when he chose Virginia Tech, he said it was because he didn’t want to be in McNabb’s shadow. I always wonder how Syracuse football would have been different had they been able to convince Vick to come. (a little off topic, sorry).

by BuffaloWill on Aug 10, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

You make a good point....

About going “all-in”. Most of us were pretty shocked with the TO signing and it really felt good to see the franchise open their wallets for a big-name free agent and I can see what Vick could do for us, but I still just cringe at the thought of it…

by BuffaloWill on Aug 10, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Im not against that, actually I would like it

no offense but you probably would have said the same thing if he said the bills would get T.O before they did. We need all the help we can get….face it we suck! T.O makes our offense all the sudden pretty scary if our line can block, why because he is very very good. Now getting Vick isnt like getting Peyton Manning but its a player that is probably the fastest in the NFL and has a cannon. He doesn’t have to play QB although I would prefer it, he could play wide out, or even put him in the backfield, maybe wildcat. Having Vick is one more thing other teams will have to plan against. I actually endorse the sign. Any talent helps this team who hasn’t made the playoffs in 10 years, T.O will help and Vick would help.

by csc06258 on Aug 10, 2009 12:47 PM EDT reply actions

Really?

a player that is probably the fastest in the NFL

I would assume all that time in prison made him slower and you saw the player that ran the fastest combine time in history last night: Chris Johnson. He’s quick (and maybe the fastest QB), but nowhere near the fastest in the NFL (especially since being away from the game) The biggest problem I would have with the signing is that he potentially won’t be there until week 7…..where will the team be at that point?

by bluecollarbuffalo on Aug 10, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes he is one of the fastest players in the leauge, he is probably in the top 10 and I would call that a weapon and #2.) what do you think a guy stuck in prison did with himself all day… probably work out all the time? so I would expect he still is in pretty good shape. you cant deny his talent, even if he doesn’t play another down in this leauge he will still have appeared in more playoff games and pro bowl games then trent ever will, sorry to bust your bubble.

Both Vick and Maybin have the same agent.

I think this might stem from Segal being in contact with the Bills so much. Who knows though.

I ceratinly don't think this is a good thing.

In fact…I think whoever is courting Vick is occupying too much of Segals time. What do I know though, it could be the bills waiting to see what SF picks of Crabby for.

by Buffalo Mo on Aug 10, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions

Well, from a pure football, Xs and Os standpoint. Vick to Buffalo makes perfect sense. Maybe King doesn’t know that Vick is going to make the fans of whichever team signs him so angry, that very few teams are actually considering signing him? And that Buffalo has already said publically that they don’t want Vick?

by kaisertown on Aug 10, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Vick would ever come to Buffalo. First off the problems he has had are completely different then T.O. Maybe someone can correct me, but has TO ever gone to prison for what 2 yrs?
And on that note, Vick hasn’t been able to work out in any setting besides a prison in two years. Let alone look at any tape or playbook. If any team were to get Vick it wouldn’t be win now, it would be let’s get him up to speed and in shape this year.

It has been driving me crazy all offseason...

every time people say “he’s made a mistake, and deserves a second chance like anyone else.” He didn’t make one mistake, he made a mistake every day and every minute he broke the law (in a pretty horrible way to boot). That’s like saying someone dealing drugs for years “made a mistake”. He’s a career scumbag and i would lose an enormous amount of respect for my football team we sign him.

But he's served his punishment in the eyes of the law.

He committed a crime, he was caught and punished. That cannot be argued. Are you saying he doesn’t have the right to try to re-enter society because of his past? Because the law disagrees with you.

Are you saying he doesn’t have the right to try to re-enter society because of his past?

If that were the case, then why bother incarcerating him? Why not just send him to the chair and get it over with. Vick deserves another shot in the NFL, I just hope it isn’t in Buffalo.

No weekend spent pantsless is a wasted weekend.

by sireric on Aug 10, 2009 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

The eyes of the law and the eyes of society are two different things.

I do think he deserves a second chance, as I’ve said before, but just because the law says he’s served his time doesn’t mean society has to forgive him.

My company does background checks and if someone’s a convicted felon, they probably don’t get hired, depending on what it was for. Many criminals aren’t forgiven by their peers after serving their time. Right or wrong, that’s the way it is. I don’t know if you have children or not, but if a convicted child sex offender who did his time moved in next door to you, you probably wouldn’t use the “he’s served his time” argument.

by BuffaloWill on Aug 10, 2009 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

They are the same thing

Laws are a set of rules and punishments agreed upon by a society. We come up with them, we amend them, and we enforce them. They are a fundamental building block of a civilized society — in order for a group to work effectively with each other, they all agree upon what is acceptable within that group and what is not.

Moreover, the sex offender comparison is nonsensical because A) Vick is not a convicted sex offender, and B) we’re not discussing Vick’s right to live in a specific location, but his right to seek employment.

Please don’t misunderstand me here — my personal belief is that child sex offenders should be dropped on an island, like that movie No Escape, and that those who repeatedly demonstrate an unwillingness to live by the rules a society agrees upon (i.e. multiple convictions) should be permanently removed from that society.

But that’s not the set of rules our society has agreed upon. Vick was given a trial and a sentence for his crime, as laid out by the laws we, as a society, have put in place. You cannot argue the law and society are two different things — one is directly created by the other. If we don’t agree with them, we change them… and those of us who don’t contribute to that change implictly accept them, regardless of what we claim. That’s the society we’ve built in this country.

by Mark Parisi on Aug 10, 2009 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   1 recs

You are missing my point...

OK…so law and society are the same thing. That’s semantics.

Just because the law says Vick has paid his debt doesn’t guarantee him not to be punished further in life. Teachers, cops, firemen, lawers and medical professionals almost all can lose their jobs permanantly because of a felony, and it doesn’t have to be directly related to their job. A very good set of friends of my family committed insurance fraud years ago. He was a cop, she was a teacher. They were caught and conviced, served VERY short jail sentences and paid a fine. In that case they were clear in the eyes of the law. But not their employers, as they both lost their jobs and careers. What they did was MINOR compared to what Vick did and my point is, that punishment doesn’t always end with the law.

My point is, just because the law says Vick has done his time doesn’t mean I am going to forgive him, and certainly doesn’t mean the NFL has to. Goodell could ban him for life if he wanted to (im sure that’d be a LONG road for him to go down, but he could).

I will state again though, I believe in second chances, but it doesn’t always happen.

by BuffaloWill on Aug 10, 2009 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d agree with this comparison but ONLY because the penal system does NOTHING to rehabilitate these guys that need it the most.

There’s a big difference between saying somebody deserves a 2nd chance and being the person who gives them that chance. Vick deserves a 2nd chance if somebody is willing to give it to him. Nobody is obligated to give that opportunity to him.

by kaisertown on Aug 10, 2009 6:37 PM EDT up reply actions

You are correct, but people here have been saying that he should have been banned outright, or suspended for far longer. That’s a much different thing than saying no team wants him.

Everyone deserves a second chance

However, i would not be happy if Vick joined the Bills.

Despite he despicable crimes, he has done his time. But he will still be suspended until sometime in November probably and he has not taken an NFL snap for three years, he wont be physically ready to play this season and it may take even longer mentally.

Wait a minute, King. The Bills need to win now, so they should pick up a guy who won’t be allowed to play until October, hasn’t practiced or played since 2006 and would bring a ton of hate out of the fans?? That’s how they’re going to win now? With a guy that likely won’t be able to contribute much this year anyhow? Ok….

Another Great Idea From King

We want to win, so what should we do?

Replace a young 65% passer with a lifetime 52% passer who hasn’t played in over 2 years. That sounds like a winning formula.

The jury is still out on our offensive line and will be for some time, so what should we do?

Replace an accurate, conservative passer with a run first quarterback who was one of the most sacked quarterbacks in the league. Sounds like a balanced attack that could really help out our offensive line.

King is an idiot. You would think after “covering sports” for so long he wouldn’t still be spewing this kind of garbage.
